annie not copy gaga .... gaga dressed man for Grammy because I had to sing the song where she goes out dressed as a man .... also there is no comparison annie lennox is a great singer and should not be compared with gaga

@thikra1000 2 women in drag who look identical?!?!? You think Lady GaGa doesn't know who Annie Lennox is? Lennox has won multiple grammies and is known as one of the best (white or not ) soul singers in the world. Gaga is a musician (you are obviously not- or you're 12) so yes- she knows who Annie Lennox is. Gaga has a great voice and is a good musician- not great. She's a mediocre songwriter- not a bad songwriter but she is not innovative, original, and she is FAR from groundbreaking.

Dressing in drag and making something up that is totally unique to the person are totally different...I had this discussion with one of my friends. Lady Gaga didn't just dress like a man for the fun of it...she was playing a role...hello people i think that it is time for you to notice what it means to be in character...
@LOLI271991 or Dustin Hoffmann was a king of plagiarism as he played a girl (Tootsie)! But the same did Tyler Perry, Miguel A. Núñez, John Lithgow, JD Pardo, Harland Williams, George Sanders, Eddie Murphy (2 times), Barry Watson, Martin Lawrence, John Travolta, Shawn Wayans, Guy Pearce, Tony Curtis, Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, Johnny Depp, Jack Lemmon, Jaye Davidson, Patrick Swayze, Michael Rosenbaum, John Leguizamo, Robin Williams, Wesley Snipes, Tim Curry and so on. So SFU ignorant moron!
@LOLI271991 You're fool. There's many women in history who performed like guy. Nobody of them are plagiarist. You're just seeking a cause to offend GaGa. Idiot!
You guys are being idiots. Annie Lennox simply just impersonated Elvis. Lady Gaga created a character, with a personality, an alter-ego. And besides, Annie Lennox was NOT the first female to do drag! Others long time ago did it.
@nik8099 Annie didnt improvise Elvis! this is the look she did for the Whos That Girl video. Its really sad when people invent things without being a fan of the Eurythmics or Annie. Get your facts straight. Ive been a fan of Eurythmics since 1982 and have followed them since.
@nik8099 It's THE EXACT SAME LOOK. Gaga hasn't done anything ground breaking or original. It's not that she's an awful artist but holding her up as some kind of innovator is just naive and pathetic. She's none of those things. She doesn't have to be to be an above average pop star.
@Ponyboy1 Gaga copied Annie, she is not original, and doesn't even give credit where credit is due. Bette Midler already bitched Gaga out for copying her mermaid in a wheel chair and not giving Bette credit.
@bloderme This was my comment: What are the differences? Gaga hasn't done anything controversial or original- She steals and steals and steal. She's a great player but an awful AWFUL songwriter. Again- what are the differences? HOW does Gaga's performance matter other than as an imitation?-- where in there have I said Gaga is not a thief? What are you talking about? As far as Midler is concerned- she's cabaret and theater- her and Lennox in the same conversation is gross and just no.
@bloderme eh. Although it's been done, Annie was clearly referencing Elvis, while Gaga was more generic 1950s. I think this instance is less of a ripoff than the mermaid thing. It's not like Annie invented drag.
Music is one rip off after another....still ripping off Mozart......ripping off Count Basie.....ripping off The Beatles....Madonna.....Chuck Berry......Beach Boys.....but there was only one Michael Jackson....ummmm Prince ...no I mean James Brown no no I meant Jackie Wilson ahhhhhh forget it !!!!
Well, you can say Annie Lennox rippped off Marlene Dietrich! It's ridiculous to say Gaga ripped her off - Through the ages women have done drag. Do you think only men do so? I adore both Annie and Gaga.
@corinne54 Marlene Dietrich never fully dressed as a man? Dietrich only wore a suit in the film 'Morroco' (1930)much in the way Cabaret artists were doing in Germany in the early 30s, she always wore full feminine makeup and curled her bob! I dont think that Gaga directly ripped Lennox off too much... i just dont see why all Gaga's brainwashed 'little monsters' believe she is so original... she is intelligent enough to play a smart game to make money, but she isnt original!
@OrianaDiazL Oh come on... we are not comparing anything, Gaga is not original at all, but everything i see she does has something that's similar to something that's been done before, so no one is comparing, maybe she's copying and the people who were not born in 91, knows it and says "Wait! i've seen that before"... Have a great day ;)
Come on. I love Annie and this performance but this and Madonna's Bye Bye Baby performance is hardly the first time a woman has done drag onstage. Before both of them there was Julie Andrew's in Victor/Victoria and Madonna's performance was clearly based on the movie Cabaret.
I'm not a Gaga fan but even I can see the differences between the message behind Gaga's performance/act and Annie and Madonna's. All the messages/contexts are different and the only similarities is the drag visual.
@pascha120 Also I'm sure there were many women doing drag in underground/secret clubs way before the musicals Victor/Victoria and Cabaret came along too!
If Gaga was copying anything she was copying/appropriating the whole concept behind the musical Victor/Victoria and not this Annie Lennox performance.
@pascha120 What are the differences? Gaga hasn't done anything controversial or original- She steals and steals and steal. She's a great player but an awful AWFUL songwriter. Again- what are the differences? HOW does Gaga's performance matter other than as an imitation?
list of epic people that support gaga. Gene Simmons, Marilyn Manson, Brian May, Alice Cooper, Elton John, Cher(duet with gaga to be released next month), Patti Labelle, Liza Minnelli, Marina Abramovic, Terence Koh, Peaches, Takashi Murakami, Cyndi Lauper, Nicko McBrain, Ozzy osbourne, Clarence Clemons, haters can shut up.
@KrisM2010 So??... that's so dumb... "Epic people who support gaga" it's like you are saying, she's worth it or as so much talent because those artists support her, let's see in 20 years if she's still around and with much success as some other legends. Let's see ;)
we forget that annie lenox was doing an impression of elvis. after the show she was herself. jo calderone was is an alter ego, not a nod toward elvis. sorry people. you're all failing epicly.
@TeamGermanottaOnYT because shitty narcissistic monologue and horrible performance of a hackneyed attempt at country are somehow better than a classic well put together song. Just face it Eurhythmics are timeless while your idol is a self absorbed cunt.
@LOLI271991 art appropriation...been around since the turn of the 20th century people, if you don't know what it is; definition - to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of man-made visual culture. artists deliberately copy images to take possession of them in their art. check out artists like cindy sherman, marcel duchamp, andy warhol, roy lichtenstein, gran fury, richard prince, john hearfield.
@LOLI271991 Please do some research before you accuse ANYONE of having plagiarized. Try looking at gagajournal.blogspot.com if you want to know what Gaga's performance was about. I'm sure she took inspiration and ideas from Annie Lennox and other drag performances, but it's clear that this wasn't her core goal.
@LOLI271991 What a load of bull. It's not called plagiarism, it's called INSPIRATION. As if Annie Lennox was the first woman on earth to dress up as a man.
@GeniusAmongTards does anyone actually own drag for it to be copied? Gaga didn't even look like that at the VMAs. totally different characterizations. and another thing, Lady Gaga's fans are eccentrics who care more about the art than the judgment of other people. and that's not something idiotic.
@GeniusAmongTards Which is funny because the same could be said about Annie. Cher did something very similar in her variety show. And Marlene Dietrich exists. Two big instances or drag kings. Nothing is original, ever. Only constant improvements are made to the same formulas over and over every generation. And there's nothing wrong with that at all. And to those saying she looked like a crackhead, that was the whole shtick. She was playing an exaggerated character who was a pervert alcoholic.
I wasn't even born when this performance aired and it was a good thing, too. I would have fallen in love so bad. *Gazes at Annie with dreamy eyes* So handsome...
also...Annie Lennox was impersonating Elvis in the Grammy's performance, but off stage, she was herself...where as jo calderone dawns a pretty infamous look from 50's greaser's and is a whole persona. not just an image.
I love Annie Lennox and the Eurythmics so much, and I really can't stand people fighting on this video. This performance was born out of a passion for music and art, and it shows. So was Gaga's, and it shows. Drag kings have been around for really long time, and neither of them were the first, nor will they be the last to do it. Neither of them will admit that they were, either. No, not even Gaga. She has always been open about her influences. Annie loves her, too.
@joshfantasy77 "I myself can look at almost any hemline, silhouette, beadwork, or heel architecture and tell you very precisely who designed it first, what French painter they stole it from, how many designers reinvented it after them, and what cultural and musical movement parented the birth, death, and resurrection of that particular trend. So dear critics and bullies: get your library cards out, because I’m about to do a reading.: Lady GaGa

@spykatt oh, and no offense. i'm about to graduate with a bachelors in fine arts degree at one of the best schools in this country. i'm not going to take art advice from someone quoting "Ghost World".
@spykatt no. found object is usually different, appropriation sort-a began with marcel duchamp's "ready made's". appropriation has nothing to do with being inspired by an artist, you can be inspired by an artist and make work that's completley different, The deliberate "borrowing" or appropriation of an image for this new context is called "recontextualization." Recontextualization helps the artist comment on the objects original meaning and the viewer's association with the original object.
Annie Lennox is amazing, Lady Gaga who is undeniably gifted is going to have to show that can go further than copycatting other stars own personal formulas.
@scsalazarma art appropriation...been around since the turn of the 20th century people, if you don't know what it is; definition - to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of man-made visual culture. artists deliberately copy images to take possession of them in their art. i have just gotten so fed up with how much people don't know about art, yet they try to talk about it like they know what they're saying. no. no you don't know. so educate yourself!
REGARDING GAGA:Did you all ever think that the BEST way to give "props" to people who influenced you was to copy them, when they haven't been seen in their prime in 20+ years... igniting a media and troll shit-storm that brings these past gems to light?
Lady Gaga is NOT an idiot. She knows damn well that people would know she was borrowing from the past. Did ANYONE EVER conceive that it was ON PURPOSE?
so i'm going to be a troll about this because i'm tired of how dumb people are when it comes to REAL art...art appropriation...been around since the turn of the 20th century people, if you don't know what it is, you have no right to comment on anything gaga does. definition - to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of man-made visual culture. artists deliberately copy images to take possession of them in their art.

@KrisM2010 So essentially she's a glorified tribute act?
And by the way, she's an egotistical bitch that either backtracks or throws a fit whenever she's accused of borrowing someone else's ideas. She herself doesn't seem to think she's "appropriating". She thinks she's a genius and the voice of a generation.
@YesImACunt ah from the mouth of someone uneducated about art practices...The deliberate "borrowing" or appropriation of an image for this new context is called "recontextualization." Recontextualization helps the artist comment on the image's original meaning and the viewer's association with the original image or the real thing. gaga hs never thrown a fit when people call her out on what she does. she's actually admited to the fact she''s done it multiple times. but you obviously don't know.
Funny how Gaga fans have to always defend another artist that Gaga has ripped off. It must be draining, lol. Ace of Base, Madonna, Annie Lennox, who's next? Gaga doesn't have a original thought in her brain.
@mglover145 art appropriation...been around since the turn of the 20th century people, if you don't know what it is, you have no right to comment on anything gaga does. definition - to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of man-made visual culture. artists deliberately copy images to take possession of them in their art.
@battleboy777 actually, funny you don't know what art is. art appropriation...been around since the turn of the 20th century people, if you don't know what it is, you have no right to comment on anything gaga does. definition - to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of man-made visual culture. artists deliberately copy images to take possession of them in their art.
@KrisM2010 If you don't give credit to the original artist that you're "borrowing" from, then you're implying that you created it, which in fact defeats the purpose of appropriation. Gaga never gives credit to the original artists. She pawns it off as it's her own.
@battleboy777 "I myself can look at almost any hemline, silhouette, beadwork, or heel architecture and tell you very precisely who designed it first, what French painter they stole it from, how many designers reinvented it after them, and what cultural and musical movement parented the birth, death, and resurrection of that particular trend. @battleboy777 the appropriation of the object is the credit, they do not have to pay for, or give any further credit to the original after that. that is the whole art of appropriation. been around since the turn of the 20th century. please research before you try to discuss. it's so sad how dumb the world is to art and art practices that have been around for years.
To all the people claiming Lady Gaga copied Jo: Are you aware Jo is an alter ego? He was in the You and I Music video, the You and I single cover and appeared in a photoshoot last year. Expect him to be in a fucking performance once in a while, Annie isn't the first to do drag and certainly wasn't the last. #IGNORANCE
art appropration...been around since the turn of the 20th century people, if you don't know what it is, you have no right to comment on anything gaga does. definition - to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of man-made visual culture. artists deliberately copy images to take possession of them in their art. Annie Lennox looks so handsome in here. If this was a real man and I saw him in the streets I would give him a second look. Lady Xerox on the other hand looks like a crackhead who hasn't had a shower in a year.
There is a rich history of women dressing up as men or vice versa found in folklore, literature, theater, music and used for disguise, performance art and as a literary trope in modern times and throughout history. NO ONE is original in a gender bender role. Gaga is Jo, more Italian look & Annie has more Elvis Presley look. (2)
Young people don´t know the original versions. Lady Gaga is full of bullshit. I mean she´s talented of course, she knows how to sing, and play the piano but her "creativity" is just a rip off of previous great artists. I use to love her, but now i know she´s only a product. And her ridiculous dresses are not her creation. So she´s jsut another pop managed product.
@Rejito no actually you're full of bull shit, because NO ONE knows what art appropriation is, which is sad since it's been an accepted art practice sine the turh of the 20th century. here's a defination of it for ya. artists deliberately copy images to take possession of them in their art. They are not stealing or plagiarizing. They are not passing off these images as their very own. to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of man-made visual culture.
@KrisM2010 Andy warhol´s work is based on it. and it isn´t like u described it. You´re transforming the concept in order to justify copying.i taught old gaga was very original in her paparazzi video, and performance. She APPROPIATED some surreal concepts (such as the metropolis meca)and turned into something great. BUt then she´s done too much rip offs. There is more to creativity not everything has been done yet. i think is her producers who r telling her what to do nowadays. Have a nice life.
@Rejito no, andy warhol was not the father of appropriation, though he did work in it, so very good. HOWEVER what gaga does in similar to CYNDI SHERMAN'S style of appropriation, look her up. sherman takes on the guises of public figures in history, gaga takes on the guises of or pop culture socialites. also, i'm about to graduate with a bachelors in fine arts, i know my concepts and can explain them very clearly, sorry that you do not.
@KrisM2010 Uhh..where did i wrote Andy W was the father of appropriation?? he was just an exmple. I honestly don´t care about you geting a bachelor in fine arts, it doesn´t reflect on your opinions (that´s my opinion) if others(yourself included) think you´re an amazing art critique, GREAT, you´ll have a nice future.Anyways There´s nothing more subjective than art itself. We all have our own opinons of it. However thanks for the info, ill google cyndi. Good luck defending gaga. have a nice life
@Rejito you didn't. i was just stating that andy warhol is only a single representation of appropriation. he is not the prime example though, and he did not create it. i'm not defending gaga per-say, i'm defending art, i don't care about being an art critic either, but i at least know what i'm talking about before i go talking my mouth off.
@KrisM2010 "i at least know what i'm talking about before i go talking my mouth off." Excellent, that´ll be very helpfull in your life. Have a nice one.
@Rejito thank you, you too. if you want to check out more people who have stolen art to make their own you should check out marcel duchamp's lhooq. also known as the mona lisa with a mustache.
There is a rich history of women dressing up as men or vice versa found in folklore, literature, theater, music and used for disguise, performance art and as a literary trope in modern times and throughout history. NO ONE is original in a gender bender role. Gaga is Jo, more Italian look & Annie has more Elvis Presley look
Also, the 'almost' kiss between Gaga as a drag king & Britney as a girl on the VMAs was the first ever done in the VMAs history & on the US televisions. Annie didn't have it
@YesImACunt Madonna's the kiss is between women as I did mention, and Gaga's kiss is between a drag king and a girl. That's the big difference, and has never happened before in the VMAs history.
There is a rich history of women dressing up as men or vice versa found in folklore, literature, theater, music and used for disguise, performance art and as a literary trope in modern times and throughout history. who cares if someone dressed in drag 27 freaking years ago. that doesn't mean it can never be redone. all music and performances borrow from the past. Gaga did a great job of acting the part...
Sorry Lady GaGa, its been done and here is proof......And done MUCH better than your VMA stunt. ANNIE LENNOX can NOT be copied. She is like MADONNA she is in a league of her own.

As far as Midler is concerned- she's cabaret and theater- her and Lennox in the same conversation is gross and just no.
Ponyboy1 3 months ago
@bloderme eh. Although it's been done, Annie was clearly referencing Elvis, while Gaga was more generic 1950s. I think this instance is less of a ripoff than the mermaid thing. It's not like Annie invented drag.

Well, you can say Annie Lennox rippped off Marlene Dietrich! It's ridiculous to say Gaga ripped her off - Through the ages women have done drag. Do you think only men do so? I adore both Annie and Gaga.
corinne54 6 months ago
@corinne54 Marlene Dietrich never fully dressed as a man? Dietrich only wore a suit in the film 'Morroco' (1930)much in the way Cabaret artists were doing in Germany in the early 30s, she always wore full feminine makeup and curled her bob! I dont think that Gaga directly ripped Lennox off too much... i just dont see why all Gaga's brainwashed 'little monsters' believe she is so original... she is intelligent enough to play a smart game to make money, but she isnt original!

All the messages/contexts are different and the only similarities is the drag visual.
pascha120 6 months ago 22
@pascha120 Also I'm sure there were many women doing drag in underground/secret clubs way before the musicals Victor/Victoria and Cabaret came along too!
If Gaga was copying anything she was copying/appropriating the whole concept behind the musical Victor/Victoria and not this Annie Lennox performance.

Well start with the fact that Lennox is not positioned itself in the guise of men
moreover, it sexual orientation, and its image is just a Butch.
she never called himself a man on the scene, it was just a woman in a man's suit.
As for Gaga, it is generally another history .She presented her male alter ego.no girl in the men's dressing, namely a single male character.

@GeniusAmongTards does anyone actually own drag for it to be copied? Gaga didn't even look like that at the VMAs. totally different characterizations. and another thing, Lady Gaga's fans are eccentrics who care more about the art than the judgment of other people. and that's not something idiotic.
Onaig 6 months ago
@GeniusAmongTards Which is funny because the same could be said about Annie. Cher did something very similar in her variety show. And Marlene Dietrich exists. Two big instances or drag kings. Nothing is original, ever. Only constant improvements are made to the same formulas over and over every generation. And there's nothing wrong with that at all. And to those saying she looked like a crackhead, that was the whole shtick. She was playing an exaggerated character who was a pervert alcoholic.

KrisM2010 6 months ago
@spykatt no. found object is usually different, appropriation sort-a began with marcel duchamp's "ready made's". appropriation has nothing to do with being inspired by an artist, you can be inspired by an artist and make work that's completley different, The deliberate "borrowing" or appropriation of an image for this new context is called "recontextualization." Recontextualization helps the artist comment on the objects original meaning and the viewer's association with the original object.

Rejito 6 months ago
@Rejito no actually you're full of bull shit, because NO ONE knows what art appropriation is, which is sad since it's been an accepted art practice sine the turh of the 20th century. here's a defination of it for ya. artists deliberately copy images to take possession of them in their art. They are not stealing or plagiarizing. They are not passing off these images as their very own. to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of man-made visual culture.
KrisM2010 6 months ago
@KrisM2010 Andy warhol´s work is based on it. and it isn´t like u described it. You´re transforming the concept in order to justify copying.i taught old gaga was very original in her paparazzi video, and performance. She APPROPIATED some surreal concepts (such as the metropolis meca)and turned into something great. BUt then she´s done too much rip offs. There is more to creativity not everything has been done yet. i think is her producers who r telling her what to do nowadays. Have a nice life.
Rejito 6 months ago
@Rejito no, andy warhol was not the father of appropriation, though he did work in it, so very good. HOWEVER what gaga does in similar to CYNDI SHERMAN'S style of appropriation, look her up. sherman takes on the guises of public figures in history, gaga takes on the guises of or pop culture socialites. also, i'm about to graduate with a bachelors in fine arts, i know my concepts and can explain them very clearly, sorry that you do not.
KrisM2010 6 months ago
@KrisM2010 Uhh..where did i wrote Andy W was the father of appropriation?? he was just an exmple. I honestly don´t care about you geting a bachelor in fine arts, it doesn´t reflect on your opinions (that´s my opinion) if others(yourself included) think you´re an amazing art critique, GREAT, you´ll have a nice future.Anyways There´s nothing more subjective than art itself. We all have our own opinons of it. However thanks for the info, ill google cyndi. Good luck defending gaga. have a nice life
Rejito 6 months ago
@Rejito you didn't. i was just stating that andy warhol is only a single representation of appropriation. he is not the prime example though, and he did not create it. i'm not defending gaga per-say, i'm defending art, i don't care about being an art critic either, but i at least know what i'm talking about before i go talking my mouth off.
