I own the exact away jersey for Bobby Orr without the name on the back. A while back, I had a "serious" hockey fan say to me "Wow, that Bruin jersey is retro, whose number is that?" I asked how hold he was, and he told me "28." Sorry, a "serious" hockey fan does not get a pass on that one!
If Gretzky had been a Bruin maybe fans in Boston would be split but being a kid of 9 when the B's won in 70 and living in central Mass all i know is ORR = GOD. Even though i was an Awrey fan we all knew Orr was from another world.
@1macboo Orr was everyones favorite and I think they all had there other favorites after him, I use to love Johnny "PIE"!!! But its funny that you picked Donny Awrey, I was just talking to my brother and told him that if Sinden didnt get rid of him we would have won the cup in "74"!!
This was a great ceremony: no laser beams, no pyrotechnics. Just class all the way. If you don't get get goosebumps when Bobby Orr is introduced, you are not a hockey fan.
You can't really tell by the video, but the crowd was so loud when Fred Cusick was listing Bobby's accomplishments that you could barely hear him. It remains the loudest ovation I've ever heard when he walked out - more than a rock concert.
What they call the Garden today will never allow the crowd to give a home-ice advantage like the old building.
"Some players aspire to greatness but Bobby Orr was born great."
As Bobby Hull said to his teamates who asked how to stop Bobby Orr, "just give Orr his own puck and we'll take ours and play at the other end"
Orr was a threat to score from anywhere on the ice at any time. Orest Kindrachuk of Philadelphia Flyers said to me "Fred Shero" told us to hit his (Bobby's) knees". We felt bad about it later, but we had to do it to have a chance of winning the cup".
I never have ever called Wayne Gretzky the "Great One," that is because Jackie Gleason had that name first! But seriously, I would take Lemieux, Orr, Messier over Gretzky any day. When Gretz went to L.A. it showed that it was the team around him that allowed him to be as great as he was.
It wasn't McSorley, it was Cement head that protected him early on. You also had Messier "the cavity fighter" decking everyone with his elbows and slewfooting.
I feel so lucky to have grown up in Boston and to have seen The Orr Era and the 2 Cups in 1970 and 1972. I even got to go to the Garden a few times (Bruins, Celtics, and a concert or three - I even sat in the infamous "Obstructed View" seats on occasion) - it was a grungy old building but, unlike the sanitized palaces of today, it had character.
Gretzky played in a watered down league with rules designed to ump up the scoring, and he only played on 1/2 of the ice; check the +/- stats of Orr versus Greatzky, no contest. Knees hampering him in his early 20s, and done by 29? Can you imagine........best ever, absolutely no debate.
orr is such a humbling guy and thats how he played too. he is the greatest player in nhl history but to him hes just another player

Gretzky and LeMieux played against far inferior competition than Orr.
#4 was and still is the greatest, hands down.

Gretzgy depended on Mcsorley and his goons to clean house for him, Orr needed no one, he did it all himself.
