  • Marvellous machines. The stack looks like the one used on wood-fired engines in Finland.

  • Don't let the EPA see these videos or they'll figure out a way top shut them down too!

  • I loved it when all the locomotives, both steam and diesel, communicated with each other in the end.

  • loved it at the end when you see the f7 unit at the end of that fright line

  • 4:04 Echo;Priceless!

  • What's with the ball bearing truck at 5:15?

  • This seems to be a complex forging machine ...

... never seen here in Europe (not even in the Alps, where a gearbox design would have been advantageous - rack-and-pinion gear exceptionally)

And such an old and impressive design ...

Since there are many lubrication points? ;)

  • These are okay... I like the traditional steam locomotives better though, they look nicer IMO.

  • almost every cass video only shows the geared side of the engines, I know the other side is not as interesting, but I would like to see more of the other side.

  • Finally a locomotive that still runs on coal

  • they play that whistle so it sounds like an old timber wolf baying at the moon

  • I rode this cog railway up to the top of the hill back in the mid 70s. It was awesome.

  • @RoyLoo2 this is not a cog railway

  • @eltonjohnfan100 Well, it may not be a cog railway (honestly, I don't know the differences), but that's what they advertised it as back when we visited it in the '70's.

  • @RoyLoo2 Shays are geared locomotives. The only difference between them, and traditional rod and piston locomotives is their pistons are vertical, and they go through gearing, to drive shafts, to the wheels. A cog railway, is a railway designed only to go up steep vertical inclines. They have cog's attached to the drivers and there is a 3rd track in addition to the regular steel rails that has teeth. This is because cog railroads are so steep if they didn't have the cog rail, they would slide.

  • @RoyLoo2 It's not a cog railway. This is:

  • I love the singing of that whistle!

  • WOW, id hate to get run over by that, i love the way theay sound!

  • More American made horsepower than NASCAR. Ya gotta love it !

  • Eye catching screenplay and beautiful clear video. The shriek whistling of the steam locomotive is reminiscent of the golden days of Steam Trains.

  • I love these whistles. I was lucky enough to be a kid and hear the Night of Ghost Whistles on Bald Knob in Cass, WV. Eerie and haunting, but absolutely magical. You could hear it echo for miles.

  • GREAT VIDEO !!! One of the BEST looking & very unique running engines around...."The Ephraim Shay"... AWESOME !!!

  • ความมหัศจรรย์ในภูมิปัญญา การใช้พลังงานไอน้ำยุคแรกๆ

  • I love steam engines!

  • Very good video, love the sound of the wistle

  • wie kommen die amis an eine pfeife von krauss-maffei??

  • เครื่องจักรเชยระเบิด ศ.ก. พอเพียงตัวใหม่ของเรา

  • Great Video!

  • That is a very good video. I love the final bit of the video on that corner that was great

  • Lima Locomotive Works, Inc., engineered the Shay to be practical in the cab; wood- and coal-fired versions (e.g., the Mower Lumber Company Class C's shown this video) give the fireman all the maneuvering room needed to spot-hod fresh fuel to specific points on the firebox grate. The engineer has excellent forward vision and short reach to all controls.

  • Awesome scenery and railway! What a sight to see these unique locomotives! I can't but help think that passengers needed showers after all that black smoke!

  • cooooooool, and that mekes me skared too

  • I didn't know that these had only one set of gears and pistons (on one side of the engine), always just assumed they were on both sides.

  • Sehr gutes Video. Nachahmenswert für meine Gartenbahn.

  • i just love #6's whistle!

  • they spent their time in the back woods where no one would hear their consarned whistling!!!!!!!

  • je me demande, avec ce système par où s'échape la vapeur;car on ne perçoit aucune expulsion dans la cheminée via la boite à fumée,comme sur le système habituel.

  • it'd be cool if they put Feather River #3 backin her original appearance, and changed her # back from 11, to 3 again. She'd look just like her sister #2 from Railtown 1897 at that point!

  • My family went to Cass, WV in the late 1970's & rode the train that surrounds the town. My father is a train enthusiast. What a wonderful idyllic town! Of course, most of WV is breathtakingly beautiful. Thanx 4 the memories.

  • great video i live in wv and i love going to cass i hope it never ends

  • I love the whistle and airhorn fight!

  • They still allow people to rent a cabose to take to the top of the mountain and stay for a week? Think I spelled that wrong...

  • Awesome work man.

  • great !! great !!

  • Amazing the time and effort to keep some of these all traction units running. Wonderful! After all these years those haunting whistle blows are heard across the area once more. Time never dies and I hope these engines live on to new generations whos appreciation shows the time and effort to keep this history as present day. Thanks so much for being a part of history. Great post!

  • Outstanding Video! Keep up the Great Work!

  • Genuine proof that steam locomotives are not just machines... They are living, breathing beasts!

    Marvelous video!

  • @Kiddman32 ....

  • Excellent video sir. Going to Cass is like stepping back in time! What a place!

  • Beautifully shot video. Lovely old locos. Great fun. 5*

  • must be some kind of mallet but on a narrow gauge possibley a Welsh relation ,,forgive me if im wrong ,,but what ever the origins of these locomotives they have awesome whistle on them ,,top bit of film top locos ,,glad you added your self as a friend ,,a great channel,,thanks :)

  • The Shay locomotive was designed by American, Ephraim Shay. They were mainly used on logging Railroads. No Welsh relation from what I know. The engines at Cass are all standard gauge, however narrow gauge shays were also produced.

  • amazing camera work, beautiful scenery, and what a neat train!

  • I believe that man has used that whistle before, my o my!

  • One of the U.S. of A's best scenic RR rides. Had a chance to ride along behind #6 Shay way back in 2001. Nice work! I could smell the coal smoke again right here at my desk. Thanks!

  • That whistle matches the 5 very well. A single chime is her type of whistle being the fact she is the oldest operating shay.

  • she the second oldest shay

  • Oh yeah, I forgot, the oldest lies in Niles Canyon.

  • Shay 5 is the oldest still in regular operation.

  • she's the oldest to stay at her own railroad

  • Nicely done, you have great control over the camera!
