This was my 1st concert. I saw Boingo 4 more times, and they became my favorite band. Boingo was also my last concert, around 1996 at Universal City CA. I'm now introducing them to my 7 & 9 y/o boys.
I am very proud of my little brother for listening to great music. He comes home form school one day and says all the kids at his school listen to are pop and rap crap music. So, he tries to shows them some Oingo Boingo music. They didn't even let him finish one song. They instantlly called it crap and ignored him.
@witherwing I'm jealous. I was 15 too, it would've been my first Boingo concert but my mommy wouldn't let me go!! In spite I saw them live 12 times before their farewell concert.
All this talk about the rumba-phones! According to the back of "Nothing to Fear", they ARE rumba-phones, designed and built by Leon Schneiderman. Plus, it's MUCH easier to spell than "Xylophones". Thank you, "dildonius", for providing the spelling!
The xylophones vs rhumbaphones comment is a little inaccurate. Leon DID construct the sets that you see, (as well as the metal thingys he's banging on himself) but rhumbaphones were in existance already. Xylophones are generally made of metal, and produce a very "tinny" sound. Rhumbaphones are made of wood and have a deep, rich, woody sound. FYI
Danny was heavily influenced by African instruments and music. He moved there to explore Africa when he was only a lad of 18. He came back with all of his knowledge, met up with his brother Richard and started playing violin (then trombone) with the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo.
Nice to see the comments regarding Kerry Hatch... imagine a 15 year old kid in 1985 seeing a short snippet of Oingo Boingo on American Bandstand 33 ⅓ Anniversary special.... getting inspired by Hatch's thumb slapping on 'Insects' (a ten second slot in a montage).... going out and buying Nothing to Fear and learning every bassline on said album.... then, of course, Good for Your Soul and Only A Lad, oh and the lines on the e.p. with the kitty on it. Just a teen finding a sweet groove. Thanks!
I searched high and low for AB with Boingo on it... I think my tape of that montage slipped into oblivion. It was cool how the producers segued the different artists' songs together. I got lucky by guessing that "Insects" was the proper name, and looking for it on cassette(!)...
I remember how damn hot it was during their set. Over 100 degrees in the shade. It was a helluva weekend for a spotty teen who lived just down the road.
Also... Saw Kerry Hatch a few times when he played at places like Madam Wongs West with his new band Zuma 2. Poor guy probably thought I was a stalker. I'm so embarrassed........
one of my favorites cause of these rumba-phones or balophones, whatever they are called. Danny and in the future Avila are so fun to watch playing these things!!! I want to make a t-shirt that says "there's something inside your head" and underneath a picture of a head cut open with an arrow pointing to the exposed brain that says "grey matter". Too funny
Leon Schneiderman took xylophones and changed them so that they were "Westernized" and able to be played with Western instruments. Since he altered the xylophones, he dubbed the ones the band used as rumba-phones.
This is FAR beyond just banter. It seems like he's rallying the crowd to stage a coup d'etat in S. Cal.
This is why we can NEVER piss this guy off, this footage makes it PERFECTLY clear that Danny has what it takes to take over the world and own us all. He already has us under his spell with the music, all he has to do just say the word...
For anyone who's seen The Forbidden Zone in it's entirety, or experienced a live performance of The Mystic Knights, I think they already have followed him to Hell at least once....
excellent performance and video quality as always!
By the way, I don't think that the instrument Danny is playing is called a 'rumba-phone'. I met Steve Bartek in London last november and he told me that Danny used a Balophone that Danny made himself! I don't know if that is definitely the one he is playing in this video but I'd imagine that it was
Leon created the "rumba-phones" that are found only in Boingo. He said he took balafons and westernized them to be played with our western instruments and that is what the Danny and Hatch/Avila use for these songs. If your interested, I could try finding the link where Leon posted pictures and descriptions of all the instruments he created, including these rumba-phones, which are listed as such in their albums. Although it's possible Danny learned from Leon how to make them as well...
I guess I might have just mixed up what Steve told me, we did talk for over an hour and I was quite dumb struck to meet one of my favourite guitarists! Thanks again for uploading these videos! Where do you get them all from?
Why do I smile like a retard everytime I see Danny Elfman?

If i was in that crowd, I would follow that man to Hell and back. That speech was very convincing.
I would NEVER dare piss Danny off and I would be very happy if he took over the world and VERY happy if he owned me.
Side note...When i first heard his rant I SWEAR he was going to drop the f bomb.
