@toajoethor Pretty sure it's a joke. He has guitars that have 24 frets. The biggest thing against 24 frets is spacing -- 22 almost always has more room (thus Vai scallops his highest six frets). Some people also say that having a pickup where the 24th fret would be makes for a sweeter sound, but I'm not aware of a way to test that idea.
When i saw Guthrie miss that note in the second lick i was determined to learn this... 10 trys later i said to myself this was made to be heard not to be played :)
For a long time, I've considered Paul Gilbert my overall guitar-lesson guru, but Guthrie is so utterly likable to me that he may very well take that crown. I love his style, his use of clean tone, his originality, his sense of humor FOR SURE and his accent, plus I find that the way he goes about speaking and explaing things resonates very well with me and just makes me want to raise the bar. Amazing player and teacher.
If most of you woke up tomorrow playing like Guthrie, I think you would forget what effect hendrix had on your playing style and would be playing just like this for the rest of your life with no complaints whatsoever....do you get what i just said??? or do i need to repeat it???
@Samsgarden Guthrie may not have reinvented the wheel, but he's done a lot more than just imitation. If you listen to these licks, many of the ideas are very innovative. When it comes down to making music, all we're doing in imitating sounds we've heard before. Chances are that Guthrie's imitations are much better than most of ours. He really does raise the bar for all of us, regardless of what instrument we play.
I have been a fan of Jason Becker for years and never thought I would hear somebody better with more natural ability....But Guthrie after listening to some of his tunes off erotic cakes has convinced me, he is the best guitarist I have ever heard. F'ng incredible talent.
For a long time I said, that I have started playing on a 7-string Ibanez UV777P because I have become too old to only be able hitting 22 frets on my Les Paul, but after I heard Guthie saying this I have quoted him many times instead just because I am trying to be polite. – And yes I am telling the truth ;-)
Guthrie "dude", you are to f ' in cool, all that great guitar work and an incredible scense of humor. Your remarks are the funniest thing on youtube, at least to me anyway (maybe it's just guitar player humor, but non the less, I get it). Not sure if I will ever be able to play like you, but enjoy trying, you definatly make me a better player, non the less.
Im going to Guthrie's clinic here in Cape town on the 14th of september... FUCKKCKCKC YEHEHEHE!! :D :D So amped to meet him and ask him a couple of things.
@XavSch nope he is a extremely well studied player! The diminished one is one that although i have come nowhere near understanding why he is putting a minor 6th onto i was coming up with something similar myself!
@Strange0ne u really seem to not have understood the aim of my comment xD i know he is a studied player, and even though mi comment was just "4 teh lulz" it is highly possible that a great player such as guthrie is able to create some really awsome licks just by thinking of them... amirite?
Every riff is so interesting, and I'm not even in this league but I see and hear basic shredding and sweep picking boring the shit out of me on other videos, but your riffs are so different and with a played clean sound!!! Top class!!!
A guy from work told me about this guy today... I can't help but laugh when I watch these videos because it just excites me to watch someone do this. I mean I have been playing for ten years and sometimes it just makes you go "damn, I've got ALOT of work to do" haha! This guy is freakin amazing... Tonally, technically just phenomenal. Wow is all I can really say.
Mentioning or even comparing Buckethead to Guthrie... Wow. Anyone who likes Buckethead is a fucking idiot, his composing/music are a bunch of fucking garbage and his shredding is too. Oh Buckethead, you were tapping with 5 fingers, now you're tapping with 8! And still making the same stupid Atari noises as you were before... Oh look, now you're playing the same Paul Gilbert inspired run you ALWAYS play. Brian Carroll is a FAIL. Nothing but a gimmick. Fuck Buckethead, he's shit, so are his fans.
It's true he recycles Paul Gilbert licks and computer noises way too much but Bucket isn't always gimmicky. A song like King James is an example how good a composer he can be without his typical redundancy. He surely doesn't belong in a league that includes guys like Guthrie, Bumblefoot, Eklundh, etc. but he doesn't have to be. If he were really one-dimensional then guys like Jonas Hellborg and Bill Laswell wouldn't have asked him to collaborate with them.
buckethead doesn't choose to recycle because he can't do anything else, he just enjoys certain patterns too much. plus, nobody plays as many genres as he does, not even guthrie and no guitar player makes as much music as he does on yearly basis. i can name well over 20 genres that buckethead plays fluently. i have seen him break out of his pattern box, he can when he chooses too. if you have a trained ear then you will also notice that guthrie recycles plenty of patterns too.
@MNightShamamalama Yes, but Guthrie's patterns are way more intersting both rhythmically and harmonically. He doesn't "sound" repetative, as opposed to Buckethead, who does IMO.
perhaps, but after listening to guthrie for a long time i do notice when he uses certain patterns and it does sound very repetitive to me. to me, buckethead has 2 types of patterns. ones where they are annoyingly repetitive and don't want to hear them again and then the types where you hardly notice them, but they sound so good and work with songs in many different ways.
@MNightShamamalama So do guthrie's licks actually! Everyone uses certain patterns, even great jazzplayers who supposedly improvise everything. You'll hear certain licks in Charlie Parker's saxophone playing, in Allan Holdsworth's playing, in Pat Metheny's playing etc. That's not the issue, it's how to make it sound good. The master at that to me is Greg Howe. He can take one lick and make it sound like 25. Basically because his rhythmic phrasing.
greg howe and paul gilbert. i think buckethead can do the same thing, but that's only with certain patterns. paul has shown that he could take a lick that and do the same thing but make it sound completely different. he has even taught it. i think john petrucci is another good example of somebody who does use certain patterns but ones that are hard to spot because of the nature of his patterns and the way he uses them rhythmically.
continuing: you must remember that buckethead has released over 50 instrumental cds, has been in many bands, and has been involved with an incredible amount of other projects. he is obviously going to sound more repetitive than other artists because he has put so much work out, and like i said before, he can break out of those patterns if he wants to.
Even if a had the time to study everything he just explained and got the physical dexterity to get my left hand that proficiant......then there is that right hand thing he's got going on.Picking style of the gods.
@IverDaBest He's not actually doing this for just anyone who can log onto youtube. He's doing this for people who can play, and who want to play better, or get inspired.
The vibrato on the last note on that last lick reminds me of "Nadia" from Jeff Beck. I think he said that too at 7:40 . I love that lick too it sounds beautiful. And Guthrie plays so....he makes me think he is part robot and is programmed to sound so fucking good. He makes me want to go practice right now. In fact, I'm going to do just that. Thank you, Guthrie.
Same. Well not this year, maybe the year after. BIMM looks epic. I have no idea what I'd be like if I did end with him as my teacher. I'd probably have to do more than just pinch myself! I wonder if I shake his hand I'll be given a brief burst of his godly powers? XD
@DeadWhiteButterflies Sorry to but in, ive just completed my last year there. Guthrie doesnt teach there anymore unfortunatly, nobody would turn up to his lessons, i have no idea why, such a shame. However, he does come in every term to do a clinic and its aways amazing :)
@bicmed88 No one came to his lessons?! That actually saddened me slightly to read! There's so many people like me who'd pay a fortune to get a lesson from him..
Ah what? Stupid people. Another guy whose doing and HE module at my college right now said to me his lessons used to be utterly packed, right to the rafters. He was forced to stand at the back whilst everyone clambered to get a seat right up close. Still nice to hear that he still occasionally visits and does clinics though :D
usual music store response: "well he is pretty good ,.but you should hear my cousin play"....haahaha why do I think that's so funny?! oh yeah I heard this quote so many times its like hearing the riff to stair way to heaven in a music store or the riff to enter sandman hahah
@guitaristman23 course he knows theory he used to do massive transcriptions in guitar techniques magazine thats why i know his name back in the mid 90s
Liquid legato from neptune. Im really digging Paul Masvidal from cynic, emil werstler from daath and guthrie. This outside liquid jazz sound is so awesome. gotta think though, it was Mclaughlin and Holdsworth who really started the fusion liquid sound thats so addicting. who else here is addicted?

@DeadWhiteButterflies Sorry to but in, ive just completed my last year there. Guthrie doesnt teach there anymore unfortunatly, nobody would turn up to his lessons, i have no idea why, such a shame. However, he does come in every term to do a clinic and its aways amazing :)
bicmed88 1 year ago
@bicmed88 No one came to his lessons?! That actually saddened me slightly to read! There's so many people like me who'd pay a fortune to get a lesson from him..

Ah what? Stupid people. Another guy whose doing and HE module at my college right now said to me his lessons used to be utterly packed, right to the rafters. He was forced to stand at the back whilst everyone clambered to get a seat right up close. Still nice to hear that he still occasionally visits and does clinics though :D

usual music store response: "well he is pretty good ,.but you should hear my cousin play"....haahaha why do I think that's so funny?! oh yeah I heard this quote so many times its like hearing the riff to stair way to heaven in a music store or the riff to enter sandman hahah

he seems surprisingly down to earth and fun.
i mean... you'd expect very technical musicians to be absolute assholes about their skill.
But Guthrie just seems like a person that i'd want to meet any day, regardless of the situation, time and place!

His tone and bends are orgasmic. Fuck, I want his technique.
