  • hes so good!!!

  • @onixtheone the funny part is that GGs signature has 24 XD

  • 1st lick is VERY Fripp when played slow.

  • Third lick reminds me of Eudaimonia Overture.

  • Put English captions on for this it's hilarious !

  • @guitarplaya1035 wtf lol

  • lol what's wrong with 24 frets? I just see advantages with it. I mean, why not?

  • @toajoethor Pretty sure it's a joke. He has guitars that have 24 frets. The biggest thing against 24 frets is spacing -- 22 almost always has more room (thus Vai scallops his highest six frets). Some people also say that having a pickup where the 24th fret would be makes for a sweeter sound, but I'm not aware of a way to test that idea.

  • a quien se le ocurre ponerle dislike a este video? envidia seguramente!

  • Wow!

  • When i saw Guthrie miss that note in the second lick i was determined to learn this... 10 trys later i said to myself this was made to be heard not to be played :)

  • The only one that I can actually play is the first lick. I was chuffed with myself :D ...then I watched the rest of the video :( lol.

  • The first lick is totally King Crimson

  • For a long time, I've considered Paul Gilbert my overall guitar-lesson guru, but Guthrie is so utterly likable to me that he may very well take that crown. I love his style, his use of clean tone, his originality, his sense of humor FOR SURE and his accent, plus I find that the way he goes about speaking and explaing things resonates very well with me and just makes me want to raise the bar. Amazing player and teacher.

  • I did not notice this lesson in my Bert Weedon play in a day book. I will learn this then issue the panflet.

  • No distortion, no delay, dead clean sound and he still sounds flawless and amazing!

  • My guitar...

He makes me wanna burn it...

  • highest high? this is shit

  • Lick #3 is actually not physically possible. We did NOT just see that happen. Carry on.

  • If most of you woke up tomorrow playing like Guthrie, I think you would forget what effect hendrix had on your playing style and would be playing just like this for the rest of your life with no complaints whatsoever....do you get what i just said??? or do i need to repeat it???

  • @longwhip

Hendrix actually changed the course of music, Guthrie just imitates styles, although well.

  • @Samsgarden Guthrie may not have reinvented the wheel, but he's done a lot more than just imitation. If you listen to these licks, many of the ideas are very innovative. When it comes down to making music, all we're doing in imitating sounds we've heard before. Chances are that Guthrie's imitations are much better than most of ours. He really does raise the bar for all of us, regardless of what instrument we play.

  • But can you play the second lick in reverse...???

  • I have been a fan of Jason Becker for years and never thought I would hear somebody better with more natural ability....But Guthrie after listening to some of his tunes off erotic cakes has convinced me, he is the best guitarist I have ever heard. F'ng incredible talent.

  • @jhinson411 i was thinkin the same, and his versatility.....can u imagine if jason had more time and then if they got together to make music..... :o

  • For a long time I said, that I have started playing on a 7-string Ibanez UV777P because I have become too old to only be able hitting 22 frets on my Les Paul, but after I heard Guthie saying this I have quoted him many times instead just because I am trying to be polite. – And yes I am telling the truth ;-)

  • the second lick sounds zakk wylde. Weird

  • Crap I just bought an Ibanez RG....

    T-T its not a grown-up guitar

  • cocky

  • What planet is this guy from ?

  • I think the only person from this planet that could understand what language Guthrie is communicating in is Allan Holdsworth.

  • this is so cool! now i have something new to show off hehehe,.. tnx guthrie!

  • *Highest high quality*... 240pixels, awesome!

  • @AlexVitus totally was gonna post a comment like this lol

  • son of a bitch learns 10 licks a day...

  • so easy, i can do this with my foot..

  • This guy smokes yngwie

  • love this guy

  • 'on another day of the week i might have a 24 fret, but this is a grown ups guitar'. OUCH!

  • @gamz4tlol That made me laugh alot absolutely great quote, fantastic.

  • So flippin effortless, makes us mere mortals look like wankers.....

  • Yeah.. 240p high highest quality

  • 1st and last lick are my favorite in this video, those i will surely try!

  • Guthrie "dude", you are to f ' in cool, all that great guitar work and an incredible scense of humor. Your remarks are the funniest thing on youtube, at least to me anyway (maybe it's just guitar player humor, but non the less, I get it). Not sure if I will ever be able to play like you, but enjoy trying, you definatly make me a better player, non the less.

    Thanks, Rich

  • At the fourth lick I said "Jesus Christ" and realized I might just be looking at him through my computer screen.

  • Amazing quality

  • Got it....?

  • THIs is a GROWN UPS guitar..22 frets XD

  • @onixtheone Really? 22 frets? Are you aware his Signature Suhr is 24 fret?

  • @pardeepbhachu Dude. Guthrie says it in the video, as a joke.

  • This isn't at BIMM, is it?

  • Im going to Guthrie's clinic here in Cape town on the 14th of september... FUCKKCKCKC YEHEHEHE!! :D :D So amped to meet him and ask him a couple of things.

  • guys stop comparing guitarist and play more if u wanna improve your musical ability

  • He's an alien. End of subject.

  • 3rd lick: "hey that doesn't look as hard it seems..."

    *tries to play it*

    "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

  • apparently 240p s the highest high quality

  • Awesome licks! Took me a while to learn them, some really useful techniques in there.

  • the word "guitar" should now be changed into guthrie...

  • i got that issue :( where does time go

  • the first lick reminds me of something out of star trek..

  • it's funny how he fucks up when he plays slowly, so it's like the faster he plays the less likely he is to fuck up, guthrie you doll

  • Mandolino Shur asd

  • if this is a lesson, i suck at guitar T_T

  • The first lick reminds me of "Fractured" by King Crimson. Think I'll go watch that.

  • i bet he created all those licks on the spot

  • @XavSch nope he is a extremely well studied player! The diminished one is one that although i have come nowhere near understanding why he is putting a minor 6th onto i was coming up with something similar myself!

  • @Strange0ne u really seem to not have understood the aim of my comment xD i know he is a studied player, and even though mi comment was just "4 teh lulz" it is highly possible that a great player such as guthrie is able to create some really awsome licks just by thinking of them... amirite?

  • I love that he calls 22 fret guitars "a grown-ups guitar". Guthrie is so sick nasty. He's just all around great.

  • "Excuse me Mr Govan could we slow that down?..."

"No actually we're going to speed it up"

  • 2:50 - "general idea is BROorbobribroobribrooop!"

Haha. I will now sell my guitars on ebay.

  • I don't know if they will be my favorite licks tomorrow but right now, "WE'LL LET THEM" LOL He has an awesome sense of humor.

  • Lol @ Highest High Quality

  • So far, I'm only able to do lick # 2. God help me on the other ones...

  • I wish I could play guitar like that but even when I dream of it, it isn't that good, time to make a craigslist ad :(

  • This video made me feel like the equivalent of the Jonas Brothers at guitar.

  • 7:55 "Eurgh!... Let's try that one a little bit faster"

It's as though the faster he plays the more fluent he is :S

  • holy shit, the last one is IMPOSSIBLE

  • Every riff is so interesting, and I'm not even in this league but I see and hear basic shredding and sweep picking boring the shit out of me on other videos, but your riffs are so different and with a played clean sound!!! Top class!!!

  • A guy from work told me about this guy today... I can't help but laugh when I watch these videos because it just excites me to watch someone do this. I mean I have been playing for ten years and sometimes it just makes you go "damn, I've got ALOT of work to do" haha! This guy is freakin amazing... Tonally, technically just phenomenal. Wow is all I can really say.

  • he says play my shit!

  • I am surprised by how much he combines the use of his pick with his right hand fingers for plucking notes.

  • the first one is a great demonstration on how speed can blur notes

  • 8 people tried to learn from this video.

  • G3 = Guthrie Govan and his Guitar

  • @maruciao why not, for real, him, Steve and Joe?

  • @Quilbo Him, Steve And Andy Timmons!

  • that first lick sounds like sample and hold computer generated music.

  • guthrie ftw.

  • that third lick is fuckin wild, nice little harmonic technique for a 22 fret guitar.

  • That guy achieves to make us "LOL" and "wow" at the same time. Great artist.

  • lol @ people arguing on the internets about whos the better musician. shut up and enjoy the music.

  • Mentioning or even comparing Buckethead to Guthrie... Wow. Anyone who likes Buckethead is a fucking idiot, his composing/music are a bunch of fucking garbage and his shredding is too. Oh Buckethead, you were tapping with 5 fingers, now you're tapping with 8! And still making the same stupid Atari noises as you were before... Oh look, now you're playing the same Paul Gilbert inspired run you ALWAYS play. Brian Carroll is a FAIL. Nothing but a gimmick. Fuck Buckethead, he's shit, so are his fans.

  • @oilers1go1

It's true he recycles Paul Gilbert licks and computer noises way too much but Bucket isn't always gimmicky. A song like King James is an example how good a composer he can be without his typical redundancy. He surely doesn't belong in a league that includes guys like Guthrie, Bumblefoot, Eklundh, etc. but he doesn't have to be. If he were really one-dimensional then guys like Jonas Hellborg and Bill Laswell wouldn't have asked him to collaborate with them.

  • @jaranarm

buckethead doesn't choose to recycle because he can't do anything else, he just enjoys certain patterns too much. plus, nobody plays as many genres as he does, not even guthrie and no guitar player makes as much music as he does on yearly basis. i can name well over 20 genres that buckethead plays fluently. i have seen him break out of his pattern box, he can when he chooses too. if you have a trained ear then you will also notice that guthrie recycles plenty of patterns too.

  • @MNightShamamalama Yes, but Guthrie's patterns are way more intersting both rhythmically and harmonically. He doesn't "sound" repetative, as opposed to Buckethead, who does IMO.

  • @dennoow

perhaps, but after listening to guthrie for a long time i do notice when he uses certain patterns and it does sound very repetitive to me. to me, buckethead has 2 types of patterns. ones where they are annoyingly repetitive and don't want to hear them again and then the types where you hardly notice them, but they sound so good and work with songs in many different ways.

  • @MNightShamamalama So do guthrie's licks actually! Everyone uses certain patterns, even great jazzplayers who supposedly improvise everything. You'll hear certain licks in Charlie Parker's saxophone playing, in Allan Holdsworth's playing, in Pat Metheny's playing etc. That's not the issue, it's how to make it sound good. The master at that to me is Greg Howe. He can take one lick and make it sound like 25. Basically because his rhythmic phrasing.

  • @dennoow

greg howe and paul gilbert. i think buckethead can do the same thing, but that's only with certain patterns. paul has shown that he could take a lick that and do the same thing but make it sound completely different. he has even taught it. i think john petrucci is another good example of somebody who does use certain patterns but ones that are hard to spot because of the nature of his patterns and the way he uses them rhythmically.

  • @dennoow

continuing: you must remember that buckethead has released over 50 instrumental cds, has been in many bands, and has been involved with an incredible amount of other projects. he is obviously going to sound more repetitive than other artists because he has put so much work out, and like i said before, he can break out of those patterns if he wants to.

  • Guthrie is many levels above Buckethead.

  • @ItsGojira3 Buckethead isn't even on my list of good guitarists, never mind being anywhere close to Guthries league...

  • This guy is sick

  • Buckethead has been doing this since the 80's.

  • looks like a bucket head scale

  • "a little bit hit and miss"

LIES, he hits it every time!

  • carla harmones!!!

  • this is like porn for me

  • OMG that lick 3 needs a huge stretch on my guitar :(

  • hahahaha that's some awesome shit right there!! gotta love those licks!

  • That's really interesting and unusual! Thanks for the video

  • "eww...ok let's try that a little bit faster" it pretty awesome, at least seemingly, that he doesn't take himself too seriously

  • hahaha he's like "eww!" at 2:10.

  • The last lick gives me chills. Its sounds really pretty :D

  • there is a somethink of scott mishoe style in this...great!!!!!!!!

  • The one with the barring and chicken picking is nuts.

  • Simply amazing. I would love that kind of command of the guitar ... However, when he plays that fast, it gets a bit too "Nintendo music" for me ...

  • The last lick, #5, is straight off Guthrie's album "Erotic Cakes". He plays it in the song "Ner Ner" just after the drum solo! I love that lick :)

  • I just spat on my hands

  • NO.

  • Even if a had the time to study everything he just explained and got the physical dexterity to get my left hand that proficiant......then there is that right hand thing he's got going on.Picking style of the gods.

  • @shynemydog are you talking about his hybrid picking or his picking in general?

  • there is only 2 things which doesn't excists , first is chuck norris's missed bullet and second is guthrie's missed note .

  • @norphiem 2:08 half disagrees with you. :)

  • I actually wrote all these licks for Guthrie. He's still on my case about not giving him the really hard ones.

Have a look at our lessons on Crunchy Guitar, though!!!!

  • @CRUNCHYGUITAR wow you have to do a cover :)

  • The first lick sounds like Buckethead.

  • There's one dumb thing with Guithrie, he ACTUALLY thinks we're able to play this!!!

  • @IverDaBest I know lol

  • @IverDaBest He's not actually doing this for just anyone who can log onto youtube. He's doing this for people who can play, and who want to play better, or get inspired.

  • @IverDaBest There's one dumb thing with you, if he thinks that we can play this then we can so practice!!!

  • sickeningly good.

  • 'All the fun of the fair'

  • it really makes me sick that hes not more famous than he is

  • lick #3 is reallly really cool sounding but...IT'S SO FUCKING DIFFICULT

  • dont know how he can play lick 2, my stratocaster just wont let me fit my wrist in that little gap, and Iv'e got small hands!

  • He actually thiks we can play that...'experiment' lol what a guy

  • Which Cornford head is using in this video?

  • so i thought it would be funny to tap a minor 6th higher

  • this guy is awesome, he always teaches you how to fish.

  • Pause at 2:25, LOOK AT HIS FINGERS!!

  • @MyEverConstantSmile I did what you said...and they look like fingers...I don't get it.

  • @JesuitFarmer Hmm. Well if those are regular fingers than I've got some short freaking fingers.

  • The vibrato on the last note on that last lick reminds me of "Nadia" from Jeff Beck. I think he said that too at 7:40 . I love that lick too it sounds beautiful. And Guthrie plays so....he makes me think he is part robot and is programmed to sound so fucking good. He makes me want to go practice right now. In fact, I'm going to do just that. Thank you, Guthrie.

  • weak

  • The first lick sounds like 8 bit NES music.

    Evenehis mistakes are epic.

  • he didnt teach the picking mekanics .. hes using his middle finger

  • he must be a great teacher

  • @mrcharliesolis HE TEACHES AT BIMM AND IM GOING THERE NEXT YEAR OMFG!

  • @metalmader

Same. Well not this year, maybe the year after. BIMM looks epic. I have no idea what I'd be like if I did end with him as my teacher. I'd probably have to do more than just pinch myself! I wonder if I shake his hand I'll be given a brief burst of his godly powers? XD

  • @DeadWhiteButterflies Sorry to but in, ive just completed my last year there. Guthrie doesnt teach there anymore unfortunatly, nobody would turn up to his lessons, i have no idea why, such a shame. However, he does come in every term to do a clinic and its aways amazing :)

  • @bicmed88 No one came to his lessons?! That actually saddened me slightly to read! There's so many people like me who'd pay a fortune to get a lesson from him..

  • @bicmed88

Ah what? Stupid people. Another guy whose doing and HE module at my college right now said to me his lessons used to be utterly packed, right to the rafters. He was forced to stand at the back whilst everyone clambered to get a seat right up close. Still nice to hear that he still occasionally visits and does clinics though :D

  • usual music store response: "well he is pretty good ,.but you should hear my cousin play"....haahaha why do I think that's so funny?! oh yeah I heard this quote so many times its like hearing the riff to stair way to heaven in a music store or the riff to enter sandman hahah

  • I'm gonna swap my guitar fer a kazoo!!

  • 5:24-5:31

    ......e_o

This makes me wanna throw my guitar away

  • 3:45 -"This is a grown-ups guitar, it goes up to 22 and then it stops" lol

  • @guitarplayer714 mine goes to 21, am I an elder o.O?

  • awesome player. and he seems like a funny guy too.

  • i don't get in the lick libary he said he didn't know any theroy yet he explains most things in a theroy context

  • @guitaristman23 Theory is so much more than just scales and "minor six" but i guet what you mean

  • @guitaristman23 course he knows theory he used to do massive transcriptions in guitar techniques magazine thats why i know his name back in the mid 90s

  • First lick sounds like something out of a video game. Khewl! :)

  • "sounds a bit more fun if you speed it up..." yeah, right, I'm sure it does, Guthrie, I'm sure it does...lol

  • "sounds a bit more fun if you speed it up..." yeah, right, I'm sure it does, Guthrie, I'm sure it does...lol

  • Comment removed

  • he seems surprisingly down to earth and fun.

i mean... you'd expect very technical musicians to be absolute assholes about their skill.

But Guthrie just seems like a person that i'd want to meet any day, regardless of the situation, time and place!

  • Liquid legato from neptune. Im really digging Paul Masvidal from cynic, emil werstler from daath and guthrie. This outside liquid jazz sound is so awesome. gotta think though, it was Mclaughlin and Holdsworth who really started the fusion liquid sound thats so addicting. who else here is addicted?

  • His tone and bends are orgasmic. Fuck, I want his technique.

  • but... in which situation i can use these licks?

  • @chauman10102004

    who cares?

  • the diminished lick at the beginning can be used over F# minor.

  • @Chauman10102004 just expierment with them. you might find a place to fit it into a song or something.

  • He seems really happy with his harmonic at 3:36

  • This is awesome! I love the look on his face when he does the E9 chord:P It always cheers me up looking at his videos.

  • sick. just sick :)

  • give more....:)

  • All sweet licks!
