I agree but, let's be clear, that is a SOUTHERN American accent. Not all Americans have that accent, present poster included. haha

In fact, some Southern accents vary as well. My son was born in the mid-west and I lament that he says the following words the same way : Merry, Marry and Mary.

@xXzombieXx : We Americans wanted to kill her too because this was not even a good American accent. It was a very bad and inconsistent attempt at a deep South accent. Many Southern accents in the US developed out of immigrants (of all range of social class) from the British Isles. Some, if done well, would be perfectly fine in a period drama. This was just done so wretchedly!! It's like a parody...

Just watched this series all 4 episodes and my God that woman was SO ANNOYING! I wanted to strangle her! And her voice, so so so annoying. But of course, good acting and accent. Just didnt like the character, grr.

It is often when Southern Folks get slightly emotional, our accents tend to deepen a little, and tend to be slightly over exagerated, but most of the time it's subtly present. I second that not all Southerner's speak like Dolly Pardon.

Miranda Otto's southern accent makes me laugh. It's mirrors Jodie Foster's in Maverick but without the charm of course since they play completely different characters. But Foster is also American whereas Otto is Australian, so...it might have been harder for her.

Do not rip into Miranda Otto too much. She is a great actress but it is just a shame that she can not do a very good American accent.

one minute she sounds like she's from Georgia and the next minute she's from texas and then Mississippi.

She's got the "southern" part down, she just needs to choose which southern accent to use. But it aint easy hearing the difference between southern accents if you're not from America, hell most AMERICANS can't even tell. We just simply call it "country" LOL

she's australian so it's not easy to get a really specific accent perfect, but i think she does better than anne hathaway in Becoming Jane. Most american actors can't do an australian accent either, they sound cockney. perhaps it's a good reason for using local talent. she's a gr8 actress though.
