University of London student union 1982. Great show. I got one of Neneh Cherry's scarves and thought I was going to die. The bass player was off the chain!
and to think this was on Virgin Records and was marketed as "pop music'. music like this will never get that sort of exposure ever again. different times..
there was a friend of mine who 'got' this band from the off, back in'83 (?). He played it to me, and while I thought it was certainly different at the time, it didn't click with me like it did him. very under-rated band. I always tend to 'discover' stuff when it's all done and dusted!!! LOL!!! story of my life... great memories, thanks for posting.
@Phizogphoto Neneh is great. I was just listing to Raw Like Sushi the other day and thinking how fresh it sounds. Her other albums are also great. That wasn't Neneh on the Young Ones though. I was disappointed to see the video recently and realized it wasn't her.
Such a great band. I didn't quite "get" them at the time, like virtually everybody else by all accounts (!), but totally worship them now. Better late than never, I 'spose...
Oh thank you sooooo for uploading a vid of Rip Rig + Panic. i only have two of their records and the Float UP LP and never seen any live recording/video. I absolutely love their stuff. Their combi op jazz/impro-pop always gets me happy and dancing? Who wants to start a ban like this with me? ;-)
the other singer was andrea oliver (mother of mikita oliver from channel 4) who was on tv herself a few years ago presenting a cookery programme with neneh cherry
I love this band. Who cares what anyone else thinks. If you recognise the phrase, 'she played with my knees,' you'll understand. I just want to see the three albums on cd with the two Peel sessions as bonus tracks. 'Is that it? Very soulful, ha, ha, ha.'
The singer would mainly sing the melody that was written for the horns. They didn't play a piece music for her to sing a meaningful song to. She was just another instrument in the band. How can that simple fact be pmpous?
@dairyflat greetings does any one like the shadows only there cos of the sun,ari up sang it very good song it is too.does any one know if ari did anymore stuff with r.r.p.dj.
Unbelievably gorgeous ... similar to what CocoRosie are doing now ... RRP were way ahead of their time :) Truly worthy of the word 'Awesome'

Huh? No wonder this is underrated. It's under something. Not sure, sorta close to the No Wave stuff from NY.

I just found that 'Young Ones' episode and it was a different singer, not Neneh Cherry?
Phizogphoto 1 year ago
@Phizogphoto That was Andrea Oliver, not Neneh on the Young Ones. This is Neneh.

I do remember them performing in 'The Young Ones' series years ago; I only just found out the singer is NENEH CHERRY!
Raw Like Sushi is still a great album today.

Thank you so much for this video. I went to their live performance with the late Don Cherry in Tokyo in early 80s. It was one of the best in my life.

Having seen RR&P a few times I think, QUITE REASONABLY, that your critique is, how shall I put it, WRONG, WRONG and WRONG!!!!!!
:)
dairyflat 3 years ago
Rip, Rig And Panic were not about singers. Everybody served the music rather than the music serving the singer.

...which sounds just a bit pompous to me. :)

An example of a band's music completely outstripping the vocals. The dub-rigged funk beat is in a totally subterranean mode, quite dread, actually.
