  • I believe that is by tthe "laughing policeman"???

  • @MrHoopler There is a song 'the laughing policeman' but this isn't it. I got the records with the gramophone when I was 9 years old, and think most are 1920s or 30s. This is what it says on the label

    MERRY OLD MAN

    (penrose)

    LAUGHING SONG.

    CHAS. JOLLY.

    Laughing Comedian. With Orchestra.

    (28400)

    G 7326

And there is a 3/4 penny stamp that says Associated Copyrights.

  • @MrHoopler Yes, just found some info and it is indeed 'the laughing policeman' Thanks for that.

The Laughing Policeman is a music hall song by Charles Jolly, the pseudonym of Charles Penrose. 1922, Penrose made the first recording, (Columbia Records FB 1184). however the music and melody are taken from The Laughing Song by George W. Johnson which was recorded in approximately 1901. The Penroses wrote numerous other laughing songs (The Laughing Major, Curate, Steeplechaser, Typist, Lover, etc),

  • @MalcOfLincoln Thanks. In 1971 I was a student in Geneva and someone played that recording in the dorm. We all laughed histerically at the time. I never forgot the experience. Silly some of the things our brains hangs onto isn't it?
