  • A great video. I love the class 40s!

  • My friend and I used to spend a lot of Saturdays armed with the old Day Rover travelling between Huddersfield and Leeds on the Trans-Pennine services. We were on this one and the video brings back some great memories. Oh for a bit of time travel to go back to those days, thought it would never end. Now look what we've got.

  • Although the trains still retained their charm in the 80s, most of the stations looked like they had been entirely neglected since 1963.

  • Thanks for sharing these clips with us, I miss these loco's!

  • Love the good old 40 thrashing out of Dewsbury, showing the Peak what its made of. Must have been quite late as he didn't half go for it .Does remind me of happy times at Donny station with these old masters visiting from time to time. In between Meld, Tulyar and various regiments of course....

  • My Lordz !

  • happy happy days

  • great work lads!!!!!!!!

  • oohh a 40 hauling a peak now thats hellfire

  • Great clips these. Love the sound of the Class 40 - it's unmistakeable. That high pithced whine and whistle and that throaty low rumble. The 40's must have been quite heavy to warrant 8 axles - is this true?

  • @bondmatty They weighed approx 135 Tonnes. The axle arrangement is 1co-co1 Meaning only the outermost 2 axles are loadbearing. The inside 6 are all powered - so it's a bit deceptive. 47s weigh approx 127 Tonnes and they're simply Co-Co. You're right, however, they're amongst the heavier of the old diesels - part of the reason they were retired, their weight made them underpowered.

  • @tombaker1222 The outer axles only carry weight, but the others carry weight *and* are powered. If they didn't carry weight, they would just spin uselessly (like the old Cramptons). There's about 20 tons on each driven axle, and only about 8 tons on each of the outer axles.

  • @Kromaatikse That's what I meant to say. lol

  • @bondmatty 133 tons!

  • double header

  • @cccecider Not strictly a double header, because only one loco is working.

  • @Kromaatikse wasn't thinking straight, been out of touch for a few years with the train jobby..lol...loved the 40's

  • them were the day catching newcastle - liverpool getting off at Dewsbury legging it over bridge to catch the departing liverpool - newcastle back to leeds and using day rover to get down to chesterfield for the skegness to sheffield hauled by double headed class 20's

  • Choice 110!

  • Choice 110!

  • spent a lot of time around leeds in the mid 80 s great memorys ,thanks for posting

  • Today's trains & railway are utterly crap in every way. How the railways have gone downhill since BR was broken up is really beyond me - why fix something if it aint broke? BR needs to be brought back ASAP.

  • agreed, well put :)

  • @kevatcrewe totally agree - use to ove travelling on those trains and watching them from my grans at batley carr. We used to have a great view of the railway from batley to dewsbury and you could see the expresses one after the other with loads of coaches. I remember how spacious the coaches were- you could always find a seat and even remember the compartments. Now - you are forced to stand squashed. Sit in an uncomfortable carriage if you are lucky !!!

  • @kevatcrewe yup the last train comp that was grat was gner

  • Wow that brings back memories, seeing Ribble Cement tankers. They are now Castle Cement and have twin bogie VTG tankers. I work next door to Castle

  • I bet when the lad was taking filming this he/she never imagined it would be on a medium like this and now being into trains is shite cos everything is generic and boring.

It used to be good fun (I learnt to smoke cigarettes on my days out trainspotting!)

  • MY LORDZ! Absolute as thrashable as when the 185s depart Dewsbury. Nice video

  • Lol! Or a 142/144 Pacer unit. In this day and age we have to take what traction weve got, to be fair have'nt we!! Unlike the 80s, they were just spoilt.

  • Whats with the extra set of wheels

  • why does the class 45 look so sad? :o

  • Peak Malpractice, they should have used the Old Dalby flask method to cure the Peak's woes!

  • woweee, dewsbury train station really hasnt changed that much tbh :/

  • I love br blue.

    Memories!

  • In my days after the deltics...these whistlers were my favourites..thanks for the film ...it took me right back....memorys that will never die

  • Ahhh! Platform 12 at Leeds! Takes me back to my mis-spent youth! Great vid!

  • I spent many a happy day at Leeds around this time, mainly Saturdays, or I would buy a Day Rover ticket (cost a quid, and you didn't scratch off the date until the guard gripped you) In 1983 I was on a BR YTS scheme based at Leeds, and I spent some happy days behind some much missed traction, great memories! I remember there was some grafitti somewhere out Huddersfield way extolling the virtures of 40044, always brings a smile to see 40s in blue at work - hate Peaks too, so this vid a win-win!!

  • Oh yes, the good old "Day Rover". If you were really sneaky, you could get the HST to Doncaster, jump on another one for York, then get on the Scarborough - Liverpool express as far as Huddersfield. Happy days!

  • @AndrewNeilClarkson I did the day rover thing too, back in mid/late 80's! Was excelent! the Morley tunnel was the best, used to stick head out of the window and just hoped didn't get head knocked off by someone else doing the same!! This was pre health and safety. I'm glad to say I still have a head!!!

  • Great shots and super sound too. Really miss those big ol boys whistling up and down the Midland line. Took me right back to the 70s and 80s so thanks.

  • nice one mate =D
