Beautiful as always. I did not care for the tempo/interpretation for most of the work. It was too quick, sung like one of his wonderful Mozart arias, which did not work here. I prefer tenors like Bjoerling or Bryson for this one. Still, he was one of the greats. Love Elizabeth Schumann doing this, breaks my heart. She also left us too early.
Let's be perfectly clear here - with all due respect, Pavarotti should have stopped singing in 1978 - after that year, he had nothing left but a strained tight tinny sound. Let's be perfectly clear again - Fritz Wunderlich was the perfect tenor. He was and will continue to be the greatest lyric tenor of all time - pure perfection!!!
Wunderlich es extraordinario, unico, se fue con Kraus, con Pavarotti al eden de los genios dejandonos sus interpretaciones inmortales. Descansen en paz.
I respect and appreciate many tenors; however, there seems to have been something unique about Wunderlich: his voice was so natural and perfect that the listener never is ill at ease feeling that there just might be a moment of strain, artificiality, or discomfort. Such a beautiful voice! And, how I wish that he had lived so very much longer.
@sfkcbf I could feel the same about Luciano Pavarotti, but not Carreras or Domingo, as they both strained, while Pavarotti was natural, as is this recording. Impressive!
I cannot imagine how one could listen to Bjorling and compare that weak tenor voice to the likes of Wunderlich. There is nothing like the voice of Wunderlich in this whole wide world. And then actually LOOk at this man.... so HANDSOME.... Amazing! His early death was a tragedy one can hardly put to words.........
@cocoagirl61660 -You are so narrow.Bjoerling was also one of the greatest tenors ever along with Caruso,Gigli, and Di Stefano. His being handsome added nothing to the quality of his voice-which was not wanting of anything else.
To each his own. Bjorling superior to Wunderlich??? IMO Bjorling didn't have half the voice or wasn't half the singer that Wunderlich was. There is precious little that I can stand to even listen to Bjoerling in, but that is all in the more lyric repertoire. His timbre grates on my ear. IMO his voice is too shrill, whiny, especially in heavier rep.
@MrPrimotenore I couldn't agree with you more. Bjoerling had a pharyngeal resonance that made him irritating in everything he sang...except wehen he sang in Swedish!
My, how many times you hear this song, you are moved greatly (it's magical)--but despite my love of Wunderlich, I prefer, with "Lovelytenor1, that Bjoerling's rendition is superior--don't know why, just moves me more. . . Tx!
Very rare when a voice possesses both beauty in timbre and soulful passion but Wunderlich had it all. Every phrase is sung tastefully without overdoing anything and just enough.
@rokbe4u I agree; I should write; Wunderlich is obviously better than Bocelli, had better tachnique than Corelli; and I feel Wunderlich is even better than Master Pavarotti.
@chrizosthemis ...but Bocelli can't be considered a tenor in the true meaning of the word!!! Wunderlich is in the Paradise of Music, of tenors ... One of the greatest artis of last century

Beautifully sung. I didn't know Wunderlich recorded this, and so unusual for a tenor to sing it. Thank you so much for posting this Glenmed.

Find Bjoerlings concert recording of this. It is superior but that makes FW's singing of this no less beautiful.

Wunderlich is one of the best tenor ever. He is better than Pavarotti, Bocelli and Corelli.

@chrizosthemis How you can write the name of Bocelli between two giants like Pavarotti and Corelli? (i beg pardon for my bad english)
breberto 1 year ago 6
@chrizosthemis -No doubt of that being the case. He was easily up there with the very best which were Caruso,Gigli,Di Stefano, and Bjoerling.
paulostroff99 1 year ago
@chrizosthemis: All comparisons are odious, but comparing Flitz with Bocelli it is simply an aberration, Bocelli is not in this league. Sorry....
