  • could this band have been any better? stephen stills perfect pitch in what was probably a tough place to hear anything while he sang. so great.

  • Why cut away to the audience during the wonderful break? That was daft! & spoilt the video. Fantastic song by a fantastic band.

  • Incredible

I watched this when it was broadcast live

  • Stephen Stills looks like Peter Tork of the Monkees in this video. Stephen even wears his hair like Peter and wears a very similar shirt or the same shirt that Peter wore on an episode of The Monkees. At Woodstock, Stephen looks like he's more comfortable looking like himself and sticks with it. Stephen starts looking much more sexy and yummy than before.

  • what year?

  • You are correct in writing the record companies were notorius back-in-the- day for feigning live performance however this group could and possibly did this performance. I admit the mix is damn clean .and if it came off the mixing board it might be possible, but it was 1967 and who ever heard of ethics back then. But one must also one must consider the personalities involved , especially Neil Young , David Crosby has corroberated the point on performance back then. So.... I'm just sayin'

  • the 17 people who dis like this video are the 17 dumbest people on the planet

  • This and Bluebird, two of my all time favourite songs, but you are dreaming if you think ANY of this was live. It was standard procedure for the record companies to offer alternate recorded takes to give the "illusion" of a "live" performance.

  • I saw them live at the Orlando Sports Stadium opening for the Beach Boys and they sounded like the record only BETTER...front row seat right in front of Neil and Stephen....we were probably the only folks there who were there to see Buffalo Springfield...but they won over a lot of fans that night.

  • Studious audience or what? They look dressed for a jazz concert.

  • This is the studio version with live Stills' lead vocals

  • wow

  • I played in Rock bands 45 years and while it may not be live, it is possible.

  • God Stills was beautiful back then, Im almost jealous of that French girl he married way back when

  • Love this!!! It's as real as it gets ;o)

  • could do without the ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba's, though. LOL!

  • This is live , it is close , but there are differances

  • @michaelsangels I agree that there are differences between this and the original, but this is way too good to be live. I've never heard any concert footage this old that sounded anywhere near this good. The vocal arrangement is way too complicated to pull this off live. At least that's my opinion (I've played in cover rock bands, keys and vocals, for over 30 years). Does anyone know for sure if this is really live? If it is, it's the best I've ever heard.

  • @thesomario In a live performance in a large hall is different from performing on a stage in a TV studio. The only show that I can recall that the groups didn't play live was on American Bandstand.

  • @thesomario Agreed. This sounds identical to the studio version, not that there s anything wrong with that.

  • Frogging Awesome :) QC

  • Too bad this doesn't accentuate Dewey's drumming, this was one of their best songs

  • as beautiful as this is, i think they're lipsynching. the song is identical to the studio recording.

  • @blueguitar411 back in the 60's if they were lipsyncihng they wouldn't bother having there instruments plugged into there amps. So my opinion is that they did this live.

  • @keaton1895 who's playing the acoustic 12-string at 1:57? Neil's following it on an electric.

  • @keaton1895 This can't be live: they just didn't have the sound technology back then to produce such perfect sound balance between the instruments and voices. Just listen to any old live concert footage of any band. I know that there are subtle differences between this version and the original, but I just can't believe it's totally live. If it is, it's the best live version of any rock song I've ever heard from this era!

  • Stills had an incredible voice...

  • that was that devil himself (Flip)

  • As with any generation, there were bands you liked and bands you didn't like. I certainly had mine during the "grunge" '90s. But when it comes to almost ALL of the rock music of the mid to late '60s, I don't see how someone can dislike ANY of it! I think the only group I can't stand from the late '60s is Gary Puckett and The Union Gap and various bubblegum acts like The Ohio Express. But for REAL rock, it was THE most creative time ever!

  • whart show was this on? And was that Flip Wilson?

  • @hermounts sure looks like Flip, doesn't it? gotta make the rent somehow!)

  • Rock n Roll Woman is among my top five favorites of all time too. I love seeing the old Springfield videos. This song also brings back the feelings of the late '60's.

  • Absolutely one of the best songs ever. It so great to know how these songs hold up. Many styles of music have graced the earth, but rock'nroll will never die.

  • Interesting to think back to all the talent in the Springfield. Someone in this commentary said Young's talent was wasted on the song, but one of the things that makes it great is the interplay of Stills and Young's guitars. Note that this is the studio instrumental track behind Stills singing live. I don't think even the Springfield could play this song that well live.

  • Jesus, this a great fucking clip. Those guitars...

  • My favorite Springfield song.

  • They don't make them this anymore!

  • Really rockin version of this song.

  • かっこいー

  • An amazing and moving song. Takes me back and reminds me of how transformational tunes can be.

  • What a boring song. The audience look like they're about to fall asleep. These guys all went on to much greater things. Still - thanks to Popendipity for posting this. It's a gem of that period.

  • The crowd looks like their attending an insurance seminar ...hehehe. I guess they were'nt "ready" just yet... but their kids are gonna love it!!!

  • sounds like the record with a a few live vocals and a rhythm guitar mixed together. Nice to see though. Thanks for posting.

  • One of the best bands in history and still rockin' strong. Saw CSNY a few years ago. Freakin' awesome, STILL!!

  • hey, I thought this was actually written by David Crosby, just arranged and sung by Stills.

  • @ceraph888

Stephen wrote this but claimed he based it on a riff that Crosby wrote, BUT I heard that riff and frankly I don't hear it in this song.

  • Neil young is standing on the right thinking 'i got 3 dozen songs in my head to work on after this gig, this is boring, I am way underemployd here'

  • @soyrockstar100 Never thought of that but probably true!

  • @soyrockstar100 "Neil young is standing on the right thinking 'this is boring, I am way underemployd here'"

No, I think you're wrong. Obviously his prolific talent couldn't be contained in one project but I do know that he loved the other members material. He also loved and still loves the band dynamic - his consistent 'leaving' his solo work to work with various friends/ensembles bears this out. A different time - the me/me/me mindset was yet to become an even vaguely attractive option.

  • @blackmore4 ""the me/me/me mindset was yet to become an even vaguely attractive option."

The me me?? well Of course...guys like Neil and say Bob Dylan are not meant to play in bands...Its there own personal material, words, feelings that only they can express solo... I.E.. Zepplelin on the other hand is an example of a band...each of the 4 members being an integral indespensible component...No offfense, but Buffalo springfield..........................

  • @soyrockstar100 What exactly could Bob Dylan contribute to anybody else's finished song?! I wouldn't want him in my band :-) Neil Young is different; I agree that he's most effective solo but disagree that he has no worth as a contributing player. I just feel that your original comment denigrates the unique diversity of talent inside B. Springfield. You only like the Young contributions - fine but he, I & fans of the whole collective have to differ about your fantasy "boredom" projections.

  • @soyrockstar100 I also have to disagree about Zeppelin. While I'll go with the indispensability of the Page-Jones-Bonham triumvirate, you'll find better lyricists than Plant at the end of your street :-)

  • @soyrockstar100 you can think that but he is just playing his part.

  • Flip Wilson!

  • Perfect live!!!!!!!!! Great!!!

  • Perfect live!!!!!!!!! Great!!!

  • Can we say Peter Tork,s shirt? Yes they were roomates and this is either his shirt or the inspiration was Peter's shirt He was so cute here I love the early stuff.

  • Just look at that face in the audience....she is blown away. I was lucky enough to see the Buffalo Springfield in 1967 and being 12 years old it was one (and still is) one of the greatest concerts ever. Even though this clip is using the backing music track, vocals are live and it does beef up the sound quality so I am not too bothered with that. Yes in the old days we sat down to listen to music, even rock, but that did not last long.

  • I can't believe that there 14 idiots who deslike BS?

  • This is why the 60's was so special. Real musicians, real talent and amazing songs!!

  • I used to dance to this in college for my boyfriends, I loved this whole album...when I look back, it seems so very long ago, and people were being made fun of, mocked...by the network, or whoever...that's why i am the way i am...

  • I love to see the live performances. Capture the vibe of the musicians in action. And Stephen is so cute. Love his sideburns <3

  • check out also under you tube

"For What It's Worth" - Buffalo Springfield cover

  • They were/are so cool. My old friend Rick is their bass man now.

Yes, this is not live, fwiw. It sounds exactly like the LP.

  • @GuitarBobMonterey

not so sure about that - they did play it note for note here, on the Flip Wilson Show, but certain inflections, bends, timing, volume mixing, are different from the album (play them both back to back on youtube) - I'd bet that they had it down perfect, and played it that way live - damn they're good, anyway - a freakin' perfect little gem of a rock song, with Steve Stills' youthful romantic longing up front, as with Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - anyway, an American classic -

  • @SupernalOne: It's definitely a mix of live vocals/instruments with a backing track playing at the same time. The fuzzed guitar solos are exactly the same and at one point you hear Stephen harmonize with HIMSELF.

  • @MattHatter

aha! Yes, of course - nobody did anything all the way live in those days -

  • What a find! I don't know whats funnier - a baby-faced Stephen Stills or that audience. Most of them seemed to be in a daze, and the few that were clapping didn't even have rhythm, lol

  • Groovy :)

  • Stills wrote this song about Grace Slick. Is Bruce Palmer on bass? I think the vocals are live but the instrumental track is pre-recorded.

  • BIG FONT MEANS SMALL ---- ( ))!!!D

  • NO DOUBT THIS A GREAT SONG. TOOK ME TOO LONG TO KNOW IT, BUT SURELY I CAN ENJOY IT MUCH MORE NOW, THAN WHEN I WAS A YOUNG FELLOW. STILL ONE CAN FIND THERE LOTS OF ELEMENTS RECOGNIZEBLE IN CS&N/CSN&Y SOUND. A CHORUS OF SUITE:JUDY BLUE EYES REMAINS THERE. IT'S CURIOUS.

  • @MusicManKevin -i'll take your word for it, i dont recall that show. I still think it explains the passive audience, dont you?

@ 11xzxzxz Suite Judy Blue Eyes was written about Judy Collins, I heard, are you saying this song was too? She was hardly a rocknroller.....

  • Where will Stephen Stills reside in the American songbook? Right up there with Steven Foster, as time goes by. We will always hum their tunes.

  • They were obviously playing on the Flip WIlson Variety show , not at a Rock Concert, which explains the semi passive audience. TV today doesn't have Variety shows anymore but there were many in the 60's and 70's and they all usually had one musical guest. (e.g. the smothers brothers, carol burnett show,, sonny and cher and of course ed sullivan,) but the audience is stuck in seats and all are not necessarily there for the band, which of course they would be at a real concert.

  • @mikeymichelle This was from an ABC-TV special on pop music that aired in late 1967. Flip was one of the hosts. This was three years before his own variety show debuted on NBC-TV.

  • Yeah this song is great - shame it was wasted on cold stone Judy black heart.

Great harmonies, creativity that will never come again, and yeah I have to admit Richie actually helped the band and sung Neil very well. Hard to believe that even back in the heyday they could get anything but for What it's worth on AM radio. I don't even think underground radio was hip to the Springfield in the way they should have been

  • There's 13 lost people on this planet.

  • I guess it's time to dig through the CDs and find some oldies.....and biggeral64...if you truly feel that way, then you have missed some GREAT music. Virtually every song they wrote and recorded stands alone in being something amazing. Even the lesser known songs, like Flying on the Ground is an incredibly amazing song. Try listening again with an open mind.

  • "For what its worth" was their best song, rest is a bit on the poor side

  • @biggeral64 ...in your opinion

  • @biggeral64 ...Wow.

Open up your head and listen to "Buffalo Springfield Again". Like several times.

  • Always wondered who's voice it was that introduced this song on Neil's "Journey Through The Past," LP.

And does anyone agree that the guys put on their shirts and ties, the woman put on their dresses, and dropped a 'lude,' before going to the show, or were they all just transfixed by a sound they'd never heard before?

    Peace.

    Rock

  • Prerecorded instrumental with live vocal by Stills?

  • Woman @ :50 has the old sugar cube giggles....

  • @biggeral64 Thats why they are in the RR Halll of fame I guess....nothing but rubbish in there, y;know>?

  • what 12 thumbs down?? this is in the top 20 of my all time fav songs and i mean it really so you pukes that said thumbs down go fuck yourself

  • see you at SHORELINE !!!

  • And the emerging intelligenstia at 1:57 no longer a bunch of screamers...Things were changing

  • Legend has it that Crosby wrote the da da da da da da vocal riff of this song. Why wasn't this # 1 ??

  • Sounds like CSNY! wonder why?

  • Stephen Stills at his absolute best.

  • The chick a 0:51 is absolutely blasted

  • W H Y I S T H E T I T L E L I K E T H I S ?

  • @Trocker7 WHYNOT?

  • see: Os Velhos da Montanha

  • super group

  • God he does look like Peter Tork

  • There you go!!! The beginning of Crosby, stills, nash and young... Here the roots sprouting....

  • that camera man should be shot, who films the audience during a guitar solo?!

  • This is one of the five best rock songs ever written. Beautiful beyond words, perfectly played and arranged. Stephen Stills is probably still a great songwriter, and so many of his solo, Springfield and CSN(Y) songs are great, but this one stands alone. Thanks for the post, too.

  • @christoJihad2

Well said christo. Although I would pick Bluebird as Stephen's masterpiece, this song is right up there too.

  • @christoJihad2

I sure do agree that this song is sheer perfection in every way possible and one of Still's FINEST!

  • @christoJihad2

    I totally agree!

  • This is one of the five best songws ever

  • Great video can't thank you enough, this is golden====

  • Unbelievable video, shows BS at it's best, they were great, thanx!

  • I used to play this in a band and it sent chills up my spine every time we played it- and the crowd went wild when they heard it.

  • Steve Stills, great guitarist too. Not bad for 43 years ago.

  • I remember being a skinny little 12-year-old in 1967 and thinking that Stephen Stills (as well as Jim Morrison, the Beatles, and Davy Jones of the Monkees!) were just soooo bitchen and cute. Ahhhh to have grown up with all that insanely good music. And I was too young to really appreciate it all. All I saw were the good looks!

  • This music was the cutting edge back in the mid 60's. In fact, songs by the Beatles, Stones, Spoonful, and everyone else, were all new and different, to everyone! That's why it so unique. More incredible than even that was, all of the music back then crossed over to all genres. Everyone in every race, color or creed listened to this music, it was universal. That' s the difference from what is happening today and what was happening yesterday. There may never be an artistic time like that again.

  • @flyontheguy U sir are so right on the money

  • @flyontheguy I agree with you, but with one addition; the music back then is STILL cutting edge. Music since hasn't ever been so innovative.......the 60's were just special that way. Musicologists agree, btw- An absolute boon musically speaking. So much genius floating around and seemingly manifesting in even lesser acts left and right. It will never happen again!

  • Definately live vocals. Might be stacked on pre recorded music,

  • Everytime i looke at the crowd i think shit, have these guys got drafed and how many did not come back. .. So much was going on back then.

  • That audience was in limbo somewhere between Beatles and led Zeppelin. Scream? Or, light one up?

  • The non-stop background harmonies really help make this song great. The second and best record of Buffalo Springfield (Again) that is in my all time top 5.

And if anyone listened to the 4 CD retro they will know the Buffalo had a lot of other fine songs to spare, particularly about 8 songs by Neil that are great and never heard: One More Time and Whatever happened to Saturday night? are just two great songs that one never hears.. too bad.

  • if you don't know and are interested the black guy is flip wilson. he died about 15 years ago.

  • @deemilieu Yeah, Flip Wilson was one COOL AND FUNNY Dude! I loved how he made fun of racists and racism in general.

  • worst audience.. ever!

  • @NLFilms The audience seems more chill than bad. They're just taking it in peacefully. Their applause at the end is substantial even though their responses during the song seem fairly stoic.

  • @NLFilms Back then we chilled when we were listening to such great material, we didn't jump around or hump eachother while the band played :)

  • @classichammond Yeah, it was mostly being absorbed into the music...It was a concert and treated respectfully...Plus most of us wanted to get our money's worth or the most from the concert experience by hearing every note. I just sat and listened intently and was carried away.

  • i've listened to this song over the past twenty plus years...pretty certain it's a synch.

  • @deemilieu It's weird--most of the instruments sound synched, and the harmony vocals for sure (unless they're the best live harmonists EVER! which is possible). But Stephen Stills' vocal is different. However, there is also a guitar that's way forward in the mix, where you usually hear the organ, after the "chorus." So part of it seems synched for certain, and part seems live for certain.

  • @Villagejonesy Exactly, part live, part recorded. btw, I saw Poco in '72 and they had drop dead perfect 4-pt. harmony vocals the entire show and it was astounding. Really-

  • @vampyros1 That's the best. Where do you get harmony vocals like that these days?

  • @vampyros1 POCO just KILLED. a Poco show just transported you and you never wanted it to end!

  • @1971Goldtop KILLED ... you're right!

  • @vampyros1 - Poco live, early 70's = harmonies that give you chills. "Drop dead perfect" is the right phrase, good comment.

  • @Thaxt Absolutely ... hey, we have great taste. (smile)

  • All of you cia and fbi people, let your hair down, fuck that east coast military industrial complex, pleace and love is for you, your loved ones, your children, fuck that chit mon!

Money can buy so much, but peace and love and harmony, respect worldwide, thanks to all of you for standing up for me, it makes me dizzy sometimes knowing how professional all of you are, words cannot express.

  • lip synch...but great song anyway

  • @deemilieu - actually i think this one is live...isnt it?

  • great music from a great band!

  • einfach toll!

  • that woman at .57 is openly laughing at them! Shame on her. :)

  • the cameraman must have thought it was the steven stills band

  • Who did this first, Buffalo Springfield or The Beach Boys? I've seen both groups singing this song in 1967.

  • americans who lived then were soo lucky. I dont think I'll ever get over it.

  • wow!!!!!!

  • My favorite BF song, by far:) --

  • @stevevandien Mine too!

  • @7chill777 Of course, I meant to say BS -- though I did NOT mean to suggest any degree of bullshit as regards this group:) ---

  • I miss the 60's! Everything changed .....music,clothing ,hair etc. ..and all for the better!

  • So Nice. One can never get enough of the Buffalo Springfield. Just listen to the 4 box set and you know they had a few more CDs in them if they wanted..great guitars, song and harmonies on this song in particular. This kind of music is Just Hard To Find, anything close at hand ba ba ba ba pa da..

  • @11xzxzxz

Well, I feel picky but they never had one cd in them as this band preceded the arrival of that media by about 15 years. But don't worry, they made a great statement and the members went on to make great music with others.

  • @deaddoc I don't understand. Are you making an obvious point that they didn't have a CD until 15 years later when CDs came out? Is this because I mentioned that the 4box CD set had a lot of great songs on it too? Why would you write what you wrote? Did you think I didn't know when CDs first came out or was that a joke?

  • Going to see Stephen Stills at the House Of Blues in Downtown Disney Thursday night (4-15-10). Can't wait! Hope he plays these great great tunes! I'll try and post up how he did after the concert.

  • is this lip sync or the real thing?

  • @peyoteshaman - lip sync but done well nonetheless

  • Too bad the band could not stay together longer. For the short time they were together they made, "Timeless" music.

  • this cover is on the soundtrack album journey through the past a film by neil young

  • A great rendition of my favorite Springfield song! Thanks for posting this.

  • When Stephen still hits that first..."she's a joy to know"...that young face. oh, man.

I can hardly believe how time has flown. Bluebird. where are you now?

  • Great Band, great song- too bad this is playback.

  • So great

  • Flip Wilson in da house!

  • Comment removed

  • What the hell are you blathering on about now?

  • It is amazing how long ago this was, look at how young Neil and Stephen are.

  • @jclick1972 no sht.. and a black MC even lol

  • @jclick1972 And both are still around, doing great things. Really sad about Bruce and Dewey, though.

  • You can really see where the later Crosby Stills and Nash sound came from by listening to this song.

  • BIG OLD BABA BOEY TEETH

  • this song is called "rock and roll woman" it's a great tune

  • vat ish name of da song?

  • Rock and Roll Woman.

  • A truly great rock tune.

  • This band and this SONG is so awesome!

  • I love this great band!

  • i hate when douchebags compare things that arnt even related.long live buffalo springfield

  • AND THE CROWD GOES WILD!!

  • The crowd is stoned
