i called mercedes and asked why this car ( and the other V 12s ) has a 5speedTM and not the 7speedTM ?

They said that the 7speedTM couldnt handle with so much power and especially tourge .

The tourge is limited to ~1100NM but it could do ~1500 NM

The fastest Ferrari has 580 NM .

Thats the reason why i love mercedes

Don't get me wrong, I love this SL Black (even though it costs as much as a HOUSE and performs less than a Viper), but I'm just sorry to say that if you placed a Ferrari or Viper next to this SL and let the Average non-car enthusiast compare them, in their eyes it will be no different than a Mercedez. It's just too subtle and plain for the price you pay. The performance isnt up to par with the price as well. Only Merc Fan boys like yourself would disagree.

@sdlausen I agree with this statement. I have never been much of a mercedes fan, until this car came out. It is in in my eyes the coolest looking beauty I've ever seen. The fenders make this look so mean. But it is indeed way overpriced and most non car enthuiast wouldnt think this car cost over $100,000. I would only get it if I was Jay leno rich

Visited my sister for thanksgiving dinner. guess what her husband has sitting in his garage. vid of his to come everything was blackened on his including emblems. the key to this car is the torque folks. Sl65 661 bhp @ 5400 rpm

738 lb-ft @ 2200 rpm

lambo murc 632 bhp @ 8000 rpm

487 lb-ft @ 6000 rpm

handsomestockguru does not know what he's talking about.  Both the Ferrari 599 and the Lamborghini Mercielago have (6) six speed transmissions; AND, secondly, they also have a 'true clutch' which is robotically operated. They do NOT have automatic transmissions !!

Further - the issue is not horsepower, it is torque. The SL has much more torque than either of those cars, so even if they had torque converter autos, they'd have less probs w/ the tranny.

The SLR also has a 5 speed the reason why is to prevent the engine from eating the transmission.

I prefer the 2010 Mercedes Benz CL65 AMG Coupe, Obsidian Metallic Black on Black interior with the Dark Black Ash trim. The retractable spoiler on the SL65 is badassss lol. It's so sick, Mercedes is steppin' there game up more and more every year. I have a dumb question though for all you guys...when she says 5 speed automatic, does that mean you have to shift and use a clutch like a standard or is it just put it in drive and go...and it changes gears on its own?????I have no clue?

its one of 175 in the USA not one of 200 it even says so on the top of the gear leaver. i am moving to Poland this year and have looked into buying a European spec. version. can you tell my why it is significantly more expensive in Germany than in the U.S.? (the price difference was close to 75 thousand dollars more for the European version)

Yes, you are correct. The SLR will beat the SL65 in a straightaway. But, the SL65 will handle the turns better and will thus beat the SLR in a turn.

Actually Emily, and this is by no means scientific, but the SLR did the Top Gear test track in 1:20.9 and the SL65 Black did it in 1:23.0. I note that that track is quite twisty and doesn't really have a long straightaway.
