It was 5 in the morning when I tried your method. To be honest it's revolutionary!! I got my self perfectly pealed chestnuts in two minuets. Thanks a lot for sharing this video !!
Also to elaborate: If you boil for too long the chestnut goes too soft and so crushes when you squeeze with pliers. Boil for too little and the skin is not soft enough, and not loose enough to slide off the nut. Hope this helps. Great video.
I have chestnuts like in the video and also chestnuts from china 4 times the size that are impossible to peel by hand we tried several ideas. Then I tried your technique which worked ok but only 20% success rate. I had some spare time so experimented with different boiling times and found that the optimum time(no matter what the size of chestnut) is 1 minute 20 seconds on a fast boil(dont let the water come off the boil when you put them in).Hope this helps. I now have 100% success rate. THANKS!
I used to hate peeling chestnuts. I found your video yesterday, watched the entire show and listened to every word you said. (That was the key!!!) I tried your method this morning (preparing Turkey Stuffing for a New Year's Eve Party); haha, worked so well. They popped out so easily just like they did in your video.
I was full of hope and tried your method, but unfortunately this method does not work with the chestnuts sold here in Israel. They were beautifully fresh, but the shell popped off on only about one half in ten. Not very efficient. So it looks like I'm back to "fingers bleeding in the sink" :-(
Very impressed!!! Worked perfect for me. Easiest peeling chestnuts ever and we will have chestnut dressing on Thanksgiving. :) (It worked best doing a few at a time and while they were hot) This video was a little lengthy, I agree, but not nearly as long as trying to peel them without your instructions.
@Geriattic Obviously you have never enjoyed tradionally made marrons glace they taste nothing like sugar lumps soaked in honey. Millions of people all over the world enjoy this wonderful delicacy and learning to make it is a wonderful pasttime.
@Geriattic Who is Clement Faugier? and really it is not only the French who can make delicious marrons glaces. My famiy have been making and enjoying for as long as I can remember, just wish I had taken more notice of how mum used to make it. Now she has gone and so has dad, so I learn the best way I can by following tutorials and asking different members of the family. Just because a product has some guy's name against it doesn't make it good!
@madeitwithlove I was searching for an easy way to peel chestnuts for marrons glace when I found this video. I agree this will not make traditional marrons glaces, but it seems to be so easy by comparison to the "traditional" method of getting the inner shell under your fingernails and suffering for weeks afterwards. I'm going to try making half marrons glaces. Not traditional I know, sooooo much easier!
@jonco59 thanks jonco for your interest. I don't really have too many problems with peeling chestnuts. You know as long as you can manage to get moisture inside the leathery exterior, the inner will come away fairly quickly. I've done them so many different ways now that I don't take much notice of the time it takes to clean them. Have a lovely christmas and enjoy your chestnuts how ever you make them.

Sounds like your nuts are dryer than they ought to be. Jan 18; getting late in the season for commercial nuts from stores; by this time most of them have been badly stored, and at best dried out, at worst, getting moldy. Give your uncooked nuts a hard pinch with your fingers; if they are dry, the shell will "give" quite a lot, maybe 1/4" or so; it they're REALLY dry, the shell may crack right then.
If they're not too far gone, soak them overnight, try again. Or- use them as dried...
I've always tried to find a easy way to peel chestnuts, your method seems quick and easy.
I don't know if the quality of the chestnuts make a difference. I just tried it today, it did not work for me. It can't seem to pop out like in the video. I had to rip the shell out, but then the skin is still attached to the nut.
Try scoring one slice all the way across the rounded side with a bread knife, you can keep them whole.

I got bored with your video, too slow and drawly! Half chestnuts are not much good if you want to make whole marrons glace.

Totally didn't work for me, not even close:(
Inner skin still would not separate. Different type of nut?
I love chestnuts, but not worth the work
And frustration. Pre packaged ones are just
Gross.
