Hi azbyhorn. Yes I lived in the on base nco barracks. Alas, my last name starts with a V .
But I'm sure our ships passed in the night somewheres. You being a muscian & I also. My Forte is Bluegrass & Country. No sir, never knew Senor Carlos, probably saw him though. Our Flight line was down below the B-47 Pad. Friend and I use to go over to 'Leon' on weekends off, on the old coal burner trains they had back then. When we got there, our white shirts; were Black. Leon was close to Portugal, _
This song brings back such good memories.....I was in a country band in late '50's, early '60's in of all places Zaragoza Air Force base in northern Spain, and this is one of the songs we did....love it...
@azbyhorn ___ Hey Bro. azbyhorm. I was in The 431st Red Devils in Zaragoza AFB in 60 & 61. I made my headquarters at Eliesioes down town :-) Oh Yeah... Yep Good Memories. Use to dine at "El La Cavacha" 'The Cave'. Swam in the Rio-Ebro. Spent some weekends in Segis on the Med. I had my martin D-28 over there. Just picked in the Barracks though. "Nice to hear from a "Neighbor" +Best Regards+ martinHD2828v1
@MartinD28V1 OMG...You are only the second person I have ever heard from that was in the 431st at the same time I was.....Ditto La Cavacha....Used to get wasted on Rum and Cokes ("Cuba Libres") there....You had to have been in the Airmans Club on Saturday nights where we played.....Was in band called "The Golden Strings" only because it was led by a Tech Seargent whose last name was Golden....We used to play the NCO Club on Friday nights and the Airmans Club on Saturday night...Wow..Martin D28
@azbyhorn I hear you man, Those Cuba Libres were The rage of The Age over there. I have a friend who is Very, Very savvy on these baords and we'll figure out away to get our email address's figured out.. I got a letter from 1 of our Flight Chiefs after I rotated and he said Col. JJ McCabe Cmdr. 431st, took the TF102 up 1 day, had engine failure mand his chute never opened.. Did you ever spend any time at 'The Capri?' Maybe you werent as wild as I was :-).. Small world isnt it. Had F86 Dogs 59
@azbyhorn . Oh Yeah, I did attend The Airmans Service Club on Saturdays. I was a Staff & also saw Y'all perform at the NCO Club on Fridays.. How about those little German Me-109s the Spanish A/F use to buzz around in?. The 431st had F-86D's when I first got there, but soon transistioned into F102s. And of course SAC had the big B-47s. Went to Tripoli Libya 1 time, for Rocket practice, now that was a wild place.. I didnt monkey around too much with those folks. They had big ole Knives""
@MartinD28V1 Yeah, was on a TDY to Casablanca for rocket practice...Never went to Tripoli..Lots of trips to the beach/fishing village of Sitges...beautiful little town...lots of girls down from northern European countries to enjoy the beaches..I was there when the F10w crashed...It was a trainer version, so there were two on board...squadron commander who died and another pilot who survived....Flamed out over the Med.
@azbyhorn Yes that Jet, Was the TF-102A we had. It was Lt. Col. J.J. McCabe Sqd. Commander. He Was A Nice Guy & Boss, He Got my --- Out of a crack, for a misunderstanding I had down town with a Communist Agitator. He wanted to buy my ID Card & I gave him an Attitude Adjustment with A San Miguel Pilsner Bottle.. I never got over to Casablanca. " Loved that movie though".. Had an A/ 1st Class that went over with me, Nemed Jesse James Outlaw. The Guys at Security, got a laugh out of that name
@MartinD28V1 ha ha...what a name....Dont know if you lived in the barracks or not....The first letter of the guys name I jammed with in the barracks was a K....If your last name doesnt start with K...you aint the guy. Speaking of the Spanish Air Force next to our hanger....Did you ever meet Jaun Carlos...the current King of Spain?.He was a pilot and used to hang around our hanger. BTW a working ME-109 goes for around 3Mil.Bet they wish they still had some of those.Check your channel messages
@MartinD28V1 Hey: I used to jam with a guy across the hall from me in the 431st barracks.....I had an acoustic Gibson with a DeArmond Pickup in it so I could play through an amp....I will bet money that you were the guy I would jam with......over a half century ago......Amazing
@cajunnet - Hello Lady, Lost Contact with you, couldnt get any help out of Trashville for your Dad. No one cares about "The Ones That Made C/M the Great Music """It Use To Be.""" And Always To Me. Mr. Rex Griffin Was The Best Country Song writer of Them All. JV.
@deliano2 I dont think Hank needed Merle Travis to play on this song since he was such a masterful finger picking guitarist himself......I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure it was Hank playing.
It's a good old swing type song that most artists today wouldn't have the skill to play. Thompson's band was one of the best western swing bands ever. If you can't appreciate the difficulty of this type of music you're obviously not a musician. Today's country is all "cookie cutter" pretty boys and girls with little or no talent. signed: Cleanheadman playing live and getting paid for it for 21 years
@zzpatrick1 WELL SAID my frend as I said takes more to be a star than some punk coming on stage LOADED with a ripped up dirty looking t shirt who hasn't seen a razor in a few months and looking like they havent Bathed in a while, one comes to mind Keith Urban Saw him on Marty Stuart show He looked like a total BUM.
He THINKS he's a guitar player? NOT. I guess after His wife dumped the Black Guy She picked up another Bum. Not seen a Star come out of TRASHVILLE in a LONGGGGGG time!.
sweet little song sung nicely by Mr Thompson and the kind that stays around and sung over and over by many artists! And, of course, it is great to dance to!
Country music is still a laughing stock to rock & rap fans and people who don't appreciate the genre. Same as their music(?) is a laughing stock to me.
Your idea of good country music is probably something like "whiskey lullaby."
The song was written by Rex Griffin, one of country music's greatest writers. Yes, the lyrics are simplistic and cutesy, but it's over 50 years old, and the melody and chord progression are really what makes the tune timeless. Screw the words - Chalker's steelplaying alone makes it worth listening to!
@awnok I agree, its better than the pop rock that they try to pass as country these days.
But the fact still remains that these kind of country lyrics were the kind that made country music a laughing stock , they were quick written album fillers and a long way from the quality songs that are country classics.
@pedalman . Dont mean to sound hateful, but back when Rex griffin wrote "Little Red Wagon" & Hank Penny Recorded it, There werent any Albums To be Filled. It stood on its on. And Little Red Wagon" is a Country Standard today.. Thanks.

This is the sort of country that lots of poeple laugh at ......Hank was a good country vocalist but these crappy songs were just awful .

I disagree. It's of it's time and much better than what passes as `Country` these days.
