i got the same problem too but sometimes it turns on then freezes or it just turns off. i think its the battery cause i took it to a computer place and they told me that i need a new battery
I have just bought one of these, they are old BUT heres how to make it much faster:
Solder two pins on ICS chip ->this increases board from 100FSB to 133FSB. Upgrade processor to 1.8GHz. It will now run at 2.4GHz and is comparable to entry level dual-cores!!!
I am seliing a compaq nc6400 with windows 7 ultimate - 80gb hard drive - microsoft 2007 office - 1gb ram - this is a very good traveling computer becuase of its frame and light wieght also, i recommend this computer for any traveler or some one entering a high school / college thats need a strong reliable computer - great for basicly any thing - good speed - will be cleaned professionly and will come with microsoft essantials on it
Try pressing quite firmly above the F11 and F12 keys on the silver panel as you switch on, so the 3 green leds on the silver panel flash. Then, if it starts up, try putting a dvd in the drive and play a movie minimised as you surf. The dvd activity seems to stop it freezing up.
@mikeonfreeserve i know its a bit late to be replying but plugging a usb mouse in did the same for me on the rare occasion i could get the bugger to even start up, i replaced it long ago but would you know of any way to repair the problem or any upgrades that could resolve it? seems a waste if i just throw it out
@arose60 my mate gave it to me to fix for him you need pressing around they power button on the key board, that will powr up the pc easy, just ordered a part from eaby £2 HP Compaq nc6000 Laptop Power Button Board
i have same problem but get it repaired they said ,,,,,,,,,,,, its this power problem with this machine ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but my wii fii is not working now ,,,,,,,,,,
I just fixed one with the very same problem. Watch my video to learn more. I actually point out the problem. You may be able to determine if it's the same problem by pressing down the keyboard on the right side and pushing the power button.
i had the same problem and it was a memory change bcuz the 1slot is a bit losse i tapped it downside on moterboard with electrical black tape and voila enjoy =D
right now I am having the same problem. When I hit the power button I can hear the fan turning on and the LED lights indicator flashes but nothing appears on the screen. However, the strange thing is if I have it turn on its side and give the backside a couple of beatings, the computer starts up and everything works fine. I think it could be a bad mother board.
I am having quite the sane problem. When the laptop is on and I press the laptop screen button it shuts down immidiatly. Can somenbody please help me out? Else I with have to take it to somebody.
There is no such think as a BIOS virus. If you aren't an IT professional of some sort, can you please avoid dispensing advice as if you know what you're talking about? Bad advice halps nobody. Also, reinstalling Windows is NOT the solution, and will only result in the loss of your data. It is most likely the Max1987 chip.
Like quadraphone said, there is no such thing as a BIOS virus and re-installing windows wont help in this situation considering it wont even start up to a bios menu to begin with. The most probable case is the Max1987 chip.
look like that power adapter is from a ps2 of course it wont work. i as well have a nc6000 at top specs. and i cant even use a 16.8v 65watt psu. i bought a sager notebook np4321c psu and cut off my cable on my hp psu and rewired the cable in the new sager one. it works great. and no more power flickering. but if this it happening to your laptop and this doesn't work try taking a look at the plug in the laptop or the cable is wearing out.
My wife's nc6000 has exactly the same problem as yours. I am still working on it. I guess it is due to the conflict of the hardware. This laptop is really horrible.
If it's because you're adapter is broken, you'll have to buy a new one (measure the energy level when the adapter is inserted (you will find how to somewhere on the internet))
If it is broken...
Mine was broken as well and I bought: Trust pw-1300p notebook adapter.
Mine works fine now
If it isn't the battery and/or the adapter
It could be a virus in your BIOS
Trying to reinstall your system might work (all data will be lost)
i have the same laptop.. btw.. what u should do is look on ebay for an original nc6000 adapter and get that.. if it used to work with that adapter before then ... it might be the motherboard
Got the same problem since yesterday, did you solve yours? If you did please tell me how. Thanks

HDD failed. You have to replace the hard disk, the old is probably damaged. Similarly, I had to Toshibie.

Also, please use only the correct AC adapter for your laptop. You can fry a motherboard using the wrong one.

That's why I wish hp and Compaq never merged. Compaq screws with the hp Compaq. Get a Pavilion. It's made entirely from hp.
