Does anyone know/have a copy of "transfusion" sung by Johnny Cash. Not "transfusion blues" but a song that was originally done by Jimmy Drake and Nervous Nervus?
Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is he referring to? I know what a blood transfusion is but I didn't know one could get high off one. Otherwise the lyrics don't make sense.
In the live versions, it's called cocaine blues. The record label wouldn't allow him to refer to cocaine so they changed it to "transfusion" wink-wink. I didn't get it either when I was 8 years old - but now I do.
I always loved this... my mum had a cheap Pickwick label compilation ("The Great Johnny Cash") when I was a little un. The 'Cocaine Blues' version never sounded as good to me.. not as subtle as this!!
I am not sure of the title but i bought this on an album in WOOLWORTHS way back yonder all Johnny Cash tracks including "Seasons of my Heart" - the album label was "HALLMARK" a cheapo label but full of great tracks - i must dig it out and play it some more
I couldn't sing Cocaine blues at my school. Then I came across Transfusion blues when going through his albums, and thank god I could sing it :)

the original song he said he took a "shot of cocaine" in place of "transfusion". which you sure could get high off!
I agree it makes basically no sense as is.
also at the end in the original he says "I won't forget the day I shot that baaaad bitch down" a much more badass line

.. - I think transfusion is slang for changing/alternating his condition of being through the use of alcohol and/or drugs.

I prefer the song as "COCAINE BLUES", but that slower version has the arrangement of the early Cash-Songs. Wonderful.

Song written as early as 1922 & 1st recorded as LITTLE SADIE in '30 by Tom Ashley.
In '47 Hughes reworked it as COCAINE BLUES before Red Arnall.
In '50s Woody & Cisco released it as BADMAN BLUES.
In '60 J Cash recorded it as TRANSFUSION BLUES.
DYLAN recorded COCAINE BLUES in 61 & 62 (MINNESOTA & GASLIGHT TAPES).
In '68 Cash released it as CB.
In '70 Dylan released 2 versions as SADIE.
Dave Van Ronk released it as CB in '72.
Dylan loved Johnny Cash but he KIlls on COCAINE BLUES!

Cash did Cocaine Blues on his Silver album in 1979, it is much better than this version, closer to the one at Folsom!
