That's what happened in parts of Thailand with mountains against the beach. Like this scene in Japan, pressure of the tsunami with no land to cross become a deep churning bowl of turbulance. In Thailand, some survivors of that tsunami were found at the tops of trees.

Unfortunately, three members of a volunteer fire company who were watching the tsunami for monitering were sacrificed here.
