why does every wall street movie glorifie the retail sales where you target rich individuals? it just seems like they want to show case the churn and burn... which doesn't go over well w/ institutional investors...
i became the manager to a cell phone store in less than 8 months ... it takes time to become a badass salesman but now i manage a store and i can say its honestly a gift being able to talk to people and having them buy something and still be satisfied - then we opened a new store which im managing as well and i turned it into the number 14 store in the city out of 123 stores :)
I met a kid once, 20 years old, worked at a jewelry store. That kid was a salesman like you would not believe, he could talk someone up from a $200 tennis bracelet to a $5,000 necklace in 15 minutes. Within a year he was the store manager of the place, and a year after that he was bumped up to the regional level. Last I talked to him, he was clearing $250,000 a year...kid isn't even 25 yet and he'll be a multimillionaire by 30, didn't even go to college.
i work for a real life boiler room. we have quotes from this movie posted all over the office. they laugh and joke about it being a boiler room but it really is the dark dirty side of telemarketing.
"This Broker makes a brilliant phone sale"??? This broker lies and deceives someone over the phone into buying bullshit. I'm in phone sales myself, but this movie exemplifies what kind of lying, cheating, deceiving snakes there are out there fucking people out of their money.
@adedsfsdedasewdaww actually churn-n-burn is illegal in certain cases. i mean most private client brokers have to say that what they're selling is worth something when it's really not that good. i mean, if it was infact so good they'd just buy it for themselves.
I hate salespeople. I'd like to go toe-to-toe with a so-called closer. I won't buy shit from a salesperson. I always do independent research on my own and buy on my own. Salespeople always have an ulterior motives and it's to help themselves. You can't trust them. They have no reason to want to help you and you can't feel like you have a reason to help them.
@msbunnypaws I don't think you understand that selling happens everyday. Independent research on a product is still selling the product. When you order you value meal at McDonalds, they upsell you to a large. Selling happens all the time, but for me in B2B sales, its very important that I have my customer happy. Happy customers=More sales in the future, better referrals for other businesses to contact me and get them set up. Salesmen that are in it for the quick buck don't last long at all.
@ultimatedude3312 Sometimes employees are trained to think they are selling a valuable product. A perfect example is the kid Seth in this movie. He didn't know they were robbing people until towards the end of the movie.
HAHAHA its always these little fellas that are scared of life who take on the comment board at youtube... mapo wouldnt talk shit to people in real life like this cause he is an internet bitch....
@TheSweenyToad I meant fuck as in a noun you wanker! Hence the 'THE'. Although I guess you are in some ways a fucker but not in the way you seem to be thinking of.
To be honest , Giovanni Ribisi would have done better in the role as the senoir trader, teaching a new up-and-coming trader the ropes. The guy has some range from what I can see but sadly only books roles in movies that rate: "Meh."
@Kinjamaimai real problem of giovanni ribsi is he's fugly and take part that don't allow that.
I mean take a look at charlie sheen's budd fox and now think about ribsi . which one looks like the young swinging dick ? ribsi is so ugly he doesn't look young . . I mean there sn't much to do about bone structure , hair structure . Plus he has a receding hairline . I don't blame ribsi . Sheen seems to be a complete asshol. in private life . But he looks the part . Ribsi don't .
Salespeople are the worst people, they add no value to society. They don't create, they don't design, they don't improve. They do what amounts to scamming other people. They are parasites.
@sevenheadedweasel There isn't a single company in the world that doesn't need to generate sales. Whether its be for goods or services, salesmen bring in the business.
You should have a better view of sales, wherever it is you work. Good salesmen is why you have a job there.
@thedarkwatcher Cut the bullshit man, if i want a car, i just go and get that, dont give a shit about the dealer, or anything. Its called having a brain, and make the best decision for yourself. Selling = Riping off people who are not very smart.
@kezman44 The sales department of your company is the reason you have a job - simple as that. Be thankful you don't have to pick up a welfare cheque every week.
@kezman44 People like you disgust me. It's people like you that cause all businesses to ship their manufacturing and/or jobs to countries like China and India. Have a brain? Have some respect. You mean to tell me you'd rather give ALL your money to a big business, rather than put some in another person's pocket? You make me sick.
@kezman44 I see what you're saying but do you know where to buy something? When you need a service, you pick up the yellow pages or look online and find the business and whatever they present to you is SELLING. People sell everyday. Whether its selling yourself to get out of bed or to get pizza. Car dealers have to advertise and sell you on the car to get you to buy. You say people that get sold aren't smart, but in reality, you have gotten sold at least once today without even knowing it.
@kezman44: That's such a one-sided way of looking at it.
There is nothing inherently bad or deceptive in selling. Selling is a tool - like all tools, it is the USER of the tool, not the tool itself, that is good or bad.
You can certainly be an ethical salesman, so long as you are honest about everything you sell, and you take care of your customers (i.e. offer full refunds in case they are unsatisfied)
@sevenheadedweasel This coming from somebody who calls themselves a WEASEL! Without salespeople, nothing that is created or designed or written even get's out to the masses. There's no customer service, installation, or even production without saIes. It's okay WEASEL....these comments only come from people who CAN'T SELL! WE understand.
@sevenheadedweasel Look you probably have had a bad sales experience. A sales rep is really good if you feel that you were in control of the situation. The best sales vguy at my company doesn't sell the most, but has 95% retention. He keeps the customer happy and in control. Thats is Sales. Yes phone sales is hard and alot of times you get people who don't even what to deal with them. But if you sometimes listen to what they say if they aren't pushy, you might just like what you're hearing.
this is a textbook close. granted its not always this easy but ilearned sales using the same techniques and trust me, it got me my 6 figure salary eventually
There are a good amount of sales people out there that are very helpful, especially with complicated products like insurance. However I will admit the overwhelming majority of salespeople are slime balls. The reputation is well deserved.
Do you really think some verbally coarse semi educated salesperson with the tactics of a New Yorks city street vendor puts it over on doctors very often? That low level sales pitch and carrot and stick approach only work in movies...
Sebastian: I disagree with you. I started selling cars for Nissan at the age of 20 with never giving any thought to sales. I was very quiet growing up and my previous job was walmart as a box boy. Going from hourly to commission only was a hard decision but throught the years i was trained more excessively then the marine bootcamps. Being in sales for over 10yrs i can relate to this film. This is what you call a strong closer who overcomes every objection. I'm a closer myself but rarely close over the phone and that takes knowing how to overcome every objection

hahah, I actually received such a sales call from some 'Brentwood group' company, trying to push me to buy ALKS stock, a company that supposedly invented a pill that treats alcoholics.... only idiots would believe such sales pitch, I remember he was saying 'I work here and make over $1million per year'
sure they were, mpahahah, this movie is very realistic, people are naive! even
i love these financial losers, that come to us begging for money..its a good feeling when you know that you dictate what they will be having for supper that night
Moral of the story: don't ever trust anyone who is a good talker! Wanna know why? Because they are the biggest bullshiter. I used to have my hair slicked back like character that Giovanni Ribisi but I kind of stop combing my hair like that because people were telling me it reminded them of this movie.

Man, I am just not feeling this scene. Total bullshit. It's not written or acted smart, it's just written and acted so you know it's SUPPOSED to be smart. It's not
I agree, I love this movie and this scene is written with good intentions but the doctor is way to eager to belive vin diesel, without vin diesel trying, now we are led to believe that this is bc of diesel's skill as a salemen but come on, anyone in sales knows you need twice the intensity and half the sny comments to sell an educated person a shot in the dark, A for effort, c+ for completion
@InformationPollution It seems unbelievable right? However, many people bought stocks from similar sales guys in similar boiler rooms esp. at the peak of the market ('98-'99). After losing like 40K one guy sent a threatening fax to his "broker" stating that he was going to kill him. The next day, the same broker sold the same guy more stock.
Ha! Good question. Greed is the answer. Still though, I also wonder "would anyone really fall for this besides some old, feeble person?" (sorry old feeble people!) but I bet the answer is yes. They're not allowed to do this anymore but people got rich so it must have worked on someone. I've met lots of supposedly "smart" doctors and lawyers and whatnot, and some are just horribly stupid with money. They have no clue. So I can see it happening.
This movie is scene-4-scene identical 2 my experiences coming up the ranks, even the firm getting busted....Hits much closer 2 home 4 me than GGR or Wall Street. All great movies though.
Hey I have an exclusive rights unique and HIGHLY needed flagship product and opportunity partnered with America's most well known entrepreneur. Ask me for the link to watch the video about it! No auto-responder or obligations.

this is hardly a brilliant sales call. The tactics that Chronicles of Riddick uses are bush league to the extreme.

hahah, I actually received such a sales call from some 'Brentwood group' company, trying to push me to buy ALKS stock, a company that supposedly invented a pill that treats alcoholics.... only idiots would believe such sales pitch, I remember he was saying 'I work here and make over $1million per year'
sure they were, mpahahah, this movie is very realistic, people are naive! even

It's not
InformationPollution 2 years ago 2
I agree, I love this movie and this scene is written with good intentions but the doctor is way to eager to belive vin diesel, without vin diesel trying, now we are led to believe that this is bc of diesel's skill as a salemen but come on, anyone in sales knows you need twice the intensity and half the sny comments to sell an educated person a shot in the dark, A for effort, c+ for completion
RevLSM33 2 years ago
@InformationPollution It seems unbelievable right? However, many people bought stocks from similar sales guys in similar boiler rooms esp. at the peak of the market ('98-'99). After losing like 40K one guy sent a threatening fax to his "broker" stating that he was going to kill him. The next day, the same broker sold the same guy more stock.

this is absolute nonsense. that's not how you close a sale at all.
mostrolopo 2 years ago
If you close, that's how you close - simple.
b1ueocean 2 years ago
i do, all day long K.I.S.S. keep it simple stupid that is what he did and that is how a real closer closes

Doctors are supposed to be smart. Why is he such a sucker?
MikeDunn 2 years ago
So I can see it happening.
montyq 2 years ago
@MikeDunn because many people, regardless of them being a doctor, hate to miss a good deal. And smart? I am a med. student, and I am far from smart.
Ko252 2 years ago
@MikeDunn the doc is money hungry, just like any one on the street
hansonkewl06 2 years ago
GREEEEEEEEEEED :-)

Because he thinks that because he's smart that he can't be a sucker. If you don't KNOW that you can be suckered, than you WILL be suckered.
ballantrae101 2 years ago
because he's a fucking greedy doctor.
