Economies are based on power, greed, and dishonesty. There had been economic corruption well before fiat money. A gold standard would regulate currency value, ( as would a zinc standard ect.. ) but it does nothing to keep those with the gold from exploiting those without. And that is the underlying problem; economic collapse is simply a symptom of that exploitation.

It can be made from thin air. so it can't be abused by deficit spending and credit. No one 'forces' you to take credit no, but if you want your Utopian 'free market' fantasy to continue, you will have to concede that the taking on of credit is necessary for economic expansion to take place.
New business start-ups rely on cheap credit, which is readily available at the start of the Credit cycle. Of course, once they are in debt they are almost forced to push products & services down people's throats because their home is usually on the line if the business fails.

If you've ever been involved in marketing you will know that getting somebody to sign up to your credit terms is more important than selling the product in the first place.
Sales & marketing personnel are trained to aggressively sell credit alongside products. This is in part, due to the fact that the Co. is in debt & it is more profitable than the services & products they sell.
The buyer of the product has to work like mad, to pay off his credit debt. It is a self-perpetuating system.
