The song here sounds exactly like the version from the Los Angeles album, vocal inflections and all. Did they overdub the studio version on the video footage?
Also, X's version is clearly better. They took a dreary pile of crap and turned it into a kick ass rock and roll song.
A dreary pile of crap? That's how you refer to a Doors song? Yeah, X's version totally rocks don't get me wrong but The Doors were The Doors bud! Gimmie a break.
Haha don't listen to "palejewel" Matt, he's obviously very biased. The X's version isn't even on the same level as the Door's original song. Sure, it's a unique interpretation, but let's be serious... it's the fucking DOORS your talking about.
I was in L.A. in the late 70's to very early 80's,saw X many times. As an old Doors fanatic I knew this song well & when they were on a low stage doing it she saw me in the front singing along and she bent down w the mic so we could sing it together with our heads together doing harmony like the Beatles or the Stones.
This was a nice version on this video, but that was better then. Ray is a definitely better keyboard player than me but I think my vocals were more in sync with her than his were.
I have to disagree. It's nothing like the original. They made it their own song - and Ray obviously likes it too. It works on both levels for me and I like the X version better. Times change and so do the sounds.
I 2nd your sentiments. When I first heard X's Soul Kitchen in the 80's I thought it was an X song. Even though I liked the Doors, I was only familiar with their KMET rotation plays i.e; Light my Fire, etc. I love the X version way better.
East Coast represent: saw X in New Haven (Toads Place), NYC (Brooklyn Zoo), both in the 80's, and just last year in Northampton MA (Iron Horse). Zoom and Doe were in fine form, but Exene seemd to be playing more of a supporting role, not as out-front as in the old days. Still a great band--but those early days were f-ing incredible.
Just got home from seeing X again. This time at the House of Blues in Anaheim. Another incredible show! Great mosh pit too ... old heads vs. newbies.
X is so good, but seeing them live takes it to another level entirely. Truly one of the best live bands ever. DO NOT miss them if you have a chance to catch a show. Trust me, you'll never regret it. I'm already thinking about next year.
A timely, musically gifted punk band that actually had great lyrics and something to say. They were ... and are ... remarkable. Seeing them Apr. 10th in Los Angeles. Can't wait!
Saw them in Indy last night. You will be impressed. They sound almost studio as they were and look fantastic. A typical but full playlist. They left out Adult Books and Bad thoughts but kicked ass! Billy was embracing the experience and quite cooperative with the fans. Actually posing for cell phone pics and such. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW! Kudos Billy. A genuine nice guy!
I saw them in Chicago the following evening -- sounds like they played the same set. Awesome show! I'm seeing them again Saturday night in Minneapolis.
I was there! I got there a little late but made it. Then went to the Kingston mines afterward. One of my favorite places in Chitown. I am planning on seeing the shows in Cincinnati and or Columbus. 3 hours is my driving limit for a concert. There are not many bands I would bother doing this for.
I hope you get to one of the OH shows! The Minneapolis show was even better than the Chicago show, which I thought was incredible. I don't know if it was the soundman or what...enjoy the additional shows!
Saw X on 4/10. It was insane! A mosh pit like I've not seen in 25 years, crowd surfing, and oh yea ... a band who's music is timeless and who still perform with the energy, drive and passion of 20 year olds. By the way ... I'd say only 20% of the crowd was around when X came on the scene. Most were in the 25 to 35 year old range, and about 20% were younger than that. It's great to see the next generations discovering and appreciating a truly gifted band like X.
I`m glad you enjoyed the show as much as I did. I was worried before the show after not having seen them for so long that it would would be a dissapointment. After seeing Debby Harry perform on tv recently realy makes age a reality. X eXceeded any eXpectations I had. It`s only a couple weeks away from their second midwest swing. Can`t wait! A dave Alvin cameo would be cool. To see Billy and Dave together tearin it up would be awesome!
I had the same worries. I also was afraid that the crowd would be a bunch of 50 year olds standing around remembering when life was fun. What I got was an experience that was as relevant today as it was 30 years ago. Just got tix to their June 13 show at the House of Blues. Can't wait.
I agree. There is so much talent with this band and such great music. They are to LA what the Ramones were to NY. Everyone has a favorite Ramone. Everyone has a favorite X. This band needs to be in Cleveland!
Better than the late 70's/early 80's, I hope you don't mean that they're sounding polished because the best thing about them was that raw, garage-bank sound!
Manzerek should have stayed out! cover or not. Hes the 1st worst thing that ever happened to x. clearly "we're desperate" was the truth for x at the time poor kids.
Oh yeah, the roxy, Scream (which was always a pain to find it week to week), and I missed the Masque since I was in Jr. High at the time that was going.
Ages ago, I read an interview with X in which they bad mouthed Ray Manzarek saying he was bad to work with. They said his music was based too much on classical training and too restrictive.
Thats just my opinion. Bands are usually at their best with their own music but i see you like Danzig. Now Glenn Danzig could do some justice singing some Doors classics but still wouldn't be better than singing his own songs.
I actually like this version better. X rocks. The only overrated egomaniac to beat Jim Morrison was Kurt Cobain. Yeah, I went there.

There are moments on the Door's Morrison Hotel ("Land Ho") and L.A. Woman ("Cars Hiss By My Window") that have an X sort of feel to them.

many could (and would) argue that the doors had something to do with the punk movement.

Why should've Manzarek stayed out? The records he produced were their best. He just let them plug in and play, better than what they did afterwards
