  • Wow! Did you see who directed this? Tony Palmer: legendary music documentary-maker!

  • That whole Mod subculture really left it's mark.

  • COME ON WIGAN,THE CASINO HAS GONE BUT FUCKIN ELL THERE IS LOADS OF EVERTON FANS WANTING YOU TO STAY UO."COME ON WIGAN"

  • I'm so jealous that I wasn't born early enough for the Northern Soul era.

Dancing all night with your mates to brilliant music, surrounded by people who love doing it as much as you do AND without the dreaded hangover the next morning sounds like utter bliss.

I'm doing some research into the Northern Soul movement & I've googled many a time the meaning of 'keep the faith' & haven't been able to find a suitable answer. Anyone there who knows the answer & wouldn't mind helping me out?

    Thanks!

  • @twobeautyspots I Wasnt so much a wigan,im from LIVERPOOL,WE DID GO THEIR BUT ON SCOOTERS ,MOSTLY FOR THE MUSIC AND GETTING TO KNOW PEOPLE FROM OUT OF LIVERPOOL,THERE WAS NO BOOZE ,JUST A FRIENDSHIP IN MUSIC AND THE WAY WE LIVED IE THE STRUGGLE TO GET BY

  • @twobeautyspots rave filled the void not much in the way of beer just drugs and a fantastic new music progression although its just not moved on.

  • Great film. Cheers for uploading.

  • Incredible interesting dancing community! And no beer at all! Great! I would go every week to a place like this! But I've been born a little to latle... .

  • to those who say ' eff america, NS dancers invented breakdancing' well NS dancers got their moves from copying American GIs no? also to everyone annoyed at the cameras intrusion-when we breakdanced back in the day we didn't like it either but now we're fiending to find old footage of ourselves, if the Casino was on its way out then respects to them for at least trying to capture some of the vibe, love this doc, and love to everyone who KTF and either did or are still 'living for the weekend'

  • great scene glad to have been a part of it , ktf

  • Excellent dancing. Can anyone tell me what the song that starts at 6:05 is please, thanks.

  • @UnitedRoadPaddock Judy Street - What is the song you are looking for.

  • Awesome stuff, the history of Northern!!! yes please . peace

  • what's the track at 21-22 mins please someone?

  • @davebullshit The Lovelites - (Get It Off) My Conscience

  • @spinning45s You, sir, are an absolute star, thanks very much indeed.

  • No beer + Dancing all night = Loads of weed and Amphetamines...

    NO PUSHING AT THE BACK!!!!

  • What LT mumph said!

  • The song is 'Out of my mind' - Rain

  • what is the song at 5:24?

  • The moment was the thing! Cameras, recordings were an no No! This scene was fabulous in its escape, singularly felt in a collective embrace - we were royalty in our own right for eight hours of magic we were both free and oblivious to the nonsense of the 'outside world'. Those that really 'got NS' were then and remained immortal.

  • let´s be honest,we used to go there and get absolutely blasted, danced our t--- off and had the best times of our lives, probably

  • Unless you go to a proper club on a regular basis then it can be hard to appreciate how much of a closely knit community the punters become. My parents went to NS clubs every weekend and when I told them in the very early 00's that I'm going to Gatecrasher or Godskitchen dressed in fluorescent cycling tops and face paint they completely understood why. Put it this way, they knew what it was like to be standing in a train station at 9am on a Sunday morning looking like shit and needing a bed!

  • STOP PUSHING AT THE BACKKKKK!!! :)

  • the good ole days KTF

  • well at least if you were seen your parents would know were you was and not getting up to no good

  • well at least if you were seen your parents would know were you was and not getting up to no good

  • I remember when the cameras came the bastards! Wose thing that ever happened to the Casino. Well that and fuckin Footsee and Wigans bleedin Ovatuion. All done by bread head wankers to make dosh. And it was us real lovers of the scene who paid. Being left outside while divy pricks who wanted to gorp at the dancers and fall asleep round the edges. The cameramen had a few drinks thrown at them. Thats never mentioned is it. Its all rose tinted shades innit.

  • @GasMaskHeadhunter Ur right mate I stopped going after the cameras came in it eas never the same again. The first 3 years were the best

  • @GasMaskHeadhunter Ur right mate I stopped going after the cameras came in it eas never the same again. The first 3 years were the best.

  • great moves!

  • WOW - now those really WERE the days - KTF

  • first song any one ?

  • @pyrrhonian2

Turnin' my heartbeat up by The M.V.P.'s

  • Comment removed

  • Gutted, I remember the night they did this, but I didnt go because I thought the extra light would kill the atmosphere. Derrrr , I would like to think if i had turned up I would of been filmed as I did win one or two dance competitions.

  • that girl is so sweet. I wonder what she does now?

  • my parents were into the scene, they were skin, suede heads with the reggea thing then went northern then went disco and funk. when the acid house thing broke out i got into it ,goin to all nighters n stuff, no wonder they were so relaxed with me about the whole thing!

  • Whats the name of the tune that goes "out of my mind and into my heart again" ?

  • @tommyrobb11 if nobody got back to you the song is called out,,, of my mind rain with charity brown

  • There's some mad dancing going on there. Is that where break dancing originated?

  • Just read Dave Shaw's book Casino and couldn't put it down so thought I'd look up this film. Would love to know what the 2 main people being interviewed are doing now? The book tells of people ripping up bits of the dancefloor for souvenirs but I wonder where the outside Casino lettering ended up and if anyone has posters from inside the venue? Keep the faith.

  • Hi there. The guy with the beard was (is) called Dave Withers. I think he went on to become a record dealer and DJ, though at the time he was an engineering apprentice in Bury, Lancashire. I can't remember the girls name, I think she lived in Wigan.

  • The guy with the beard is Dave Withers. I think he went on to become a DJ and record dealer and Google should find him. When the film was made I think he was an engineering apprentice from Bury. He was a good mate of Dave McFadden who I think also became a dealer. Didn't know the girl. I think she was from Wigan.

  • AND man o man Iwas there too! those were the days...

  • AH! many a happy weekend spent at the Casino. Thank you!!

  • I remember this film but didnt go to the Casino till 78 untill it closed in 81 ,I am on the last A2 Poster given out on the last oldies,In my opinion the soulboy film is a fairish rendition of what it was like .for you younger dancers check out .tommygsoulkings. channel for awesome new young up and coming soulies ktf

  • Although there is no longer a focal point, the music and scene is still very much intact.

  • wagwanjo: that is the bestest ever!...thats when we had fear of the folks, getting a clout or a bolliking!......that rocks!!! xxxxxx

  • why was i born too fucking late??its not fair man.

  • Tremendous x

  • brilliant!

  • Try BAN, MOD GIRLS, fantastic tune!

  • OMG! just seen my ex !

  • @HeadGirl Its me

  • ktf ; once a northern souler ; always 1 ; it in the blood ; hey i went in 70s n still dance ; slim n fit ;;

  • Amazing

  • The bloke with the beard - WTF happened t' him? He hit he the nail on the head not just about that scene - but every music scene that kids have loved before or since.

  • @LTmumph

It's Dave Withers...I think he's in New York now.

  • @wangwanjo. Me too! I never left the record bar all night. Mind you that was normal for me....

  • The music's awesome, but it seems like a bizarre premise for a scene...people getting together to dance to music that was 5-10 years out of date and from another country. Then again, that's sorta what people who go to funk clubs do nowadays!

  • @555608 ha ha quality, not drugs surely?!!

  • thanks for postin this up for all the world to see -altho its tip of the iceberg if you want to know about northern soul, its a massive culture with so much depth, endless amazing tunes, the dancing clips are OK but again theres so much more creative and amazing dancing not on film- but a good documentary in its own right , now a peice of social history- i love the folk stuff in this too, soulful music in its own way that shouldnt die

    Cheers!

  • Brings back wonderful memories of great times as a teenager, great friends , music and dance

  • the casino is now lauded as a vital part of recent local history and more importantly local culture , the council have opened huge cafes named after the casino, statues, artworks, things have popped up all over wigan and say the same we loved our wigan casino, isnt time funny. thats not how i remember things, but at lest thry love us now better late than never. ha ha

  • I just read the "England is grim" comment and marvelled at the complete lack of understanding that often out of the most so-called 'grimest' times some of the most beautiful, heart-felt & authentic culture can arise & Northern Soul is one perfect example of this (as was 'punk' but that's a different story). I was a too young for Wigan (the nearest I got was lending my friend's older sister who I had a huge crush on, my adidas sports bag every weekend!) but luckily old enough for the acid house!

  • @jackamo23 but punk was shit and about as authentic as father christmas - authentic people (at the time punk was pleasing the rock type people) were into funk and jazz-funk (London and the South east) northern soul (the rest of he country)

  • Pure wonderment. Thank you.

  • great video, thanks for the upload

  • i really want to get into this genre of music, but where do i start?

  • @ty3165 its all on u tube every tune you need is there , start @ northern soul n go from there, enjoy urself its the best music of ALL time every emotion is catered for u will have a ball. easy phil wigan

  • It seems like only yesterday to me and the music still gets me on my feet, you can't help but dance....still loving it Keep the faith :)

  • christ, things change so fast lol, this seems ancient

  • Yes, England is really that grim.

  • my mum and dad every weekend still goin and dancing there hearts out well mainly my mum my dad into records due to being a DJ

  • I was at a northern soul night yesterday in Toton (Southampton) For me music is like the ocean and has plenty of waves, but I must say That I was very impressed by the atmosphere and those lovely dancers. Champion Olivier, from Caferetro.info in Hampshire

  • OT: Has anyone heard of a singer called Luster Intram ? I have him on a 70's comp hits LP and the song is "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" . I thought that it was a mis-spelling of Luther Ingram but it sounds very different to his singing. Any ideas ?

  • Too young for the northern soul scene, but it reminds me of the club scene '90-92

  • @georgeblue11 yes mate, its very similar (well it was). Ive been on both the acid house/rave &hardcore scenes and Nsoul and the atmosphere, love of just dancing and music are exactly the same, drugs taken and music are the only differences..both fantastic

  • @georgeblue11 dont you mean 88-92 you missed two of the most (the most important?) years out!

  • Hi Lindc100

the song your after @ 340 is called "Out of my Mind" by "Rain with Charity Brown". Go to my YouTube channel Dancemaster9 you'll find some cracking songs there from the Casino! Cya

  • Welcome to merry ol England. You're absolutely welcome.

  • @Supermod66 They have odd nights at labour clubs, thats all. Everyone who's into music/bands etc wanted them to convert the old cinema that was opposite the The casino into a venue that could have been used, but instead the horrible council knocked it down and built another shopping centre there that is now going into recievership ....smart move !!

Its all a sad end to what could have been a great great legacy :S

  • If you never went you will not understand why we loved the music and the Casino.I am now 53 years old, I went to the Casino from 73 to 76 when I moved away and I still miss it today, and still play my records every week. Keep The Faith .

  • Muito Bom ! Se tivesse isso aqui no Brasil, mas quase ninguem conhece

  • It is the music, stupid!!!

  • don't serve alcohol - but look at their eyes at 2:50 when they're at the door LOL. Spacecakes!

  • can anyone tell my the name of the song that starts at 3:40? thanks!

  • @banburger Yes the Americans were gutted when they realised the best dancers werent in the US but in a small northern town in the UK called Wigan!

  • Lovelites - Get It Off My Conscience - never hear this played nowadays, why? I didnt get to Wigan but been on the scene since 1980, lot has changed over the years, venues, people coming and going, but it is still like a community and nothing else is as friendly

  • Its a real shame theres nothing on in wigan now. Its really really shit, a great waste of a place. They never do any Northern sould nite's there. Pity : (

  • is this the one on dvd?

  • rip wigan. happy happy days

  • Beautiful!

    Thanks for this!!

  • im a punk from London '76, and the scenes are very similar. love the dancing, but the tunes!!!!!!!!

im probably gonna embarrass myself at a Soul weekender soon.

and jaybee if your Man U and came down to West Ham in '75..........well we all know how that turned out.

    That aside, love this stuff,

  • im a punk from 76. it wasa very similar scene in many respects.

love the dancing, but the tunes!!! i can see me embarrassing myself at a Soul weekender soon.

And Jay bee, if your Man U, and came down to West Ham in 75..... well we all know how that turned out.

regardless, ;love the scene and cant get the music out of my head.

    thanks

  • no pushin at the back , i was at arsenal west ham n leeds etc knockin fuck out of assholes like him , the gobshite !!!haha, facist,

  • No disrespect but @ 4:07 I swear the first person that young lady popped in my head was SUSAN BOYLE, yeah I know thats crazy but can you see a little of her there? Nah, probably not..a great find Red! To actually see this being new to Northern soul. Just paid $1925 USD for Brook Brothers "Looking For A Woman" on TAY...risky? Maybe, but it's mine! lol..

  • Definitive answer - ( I know, nonbody loves a smarta--e ) hehe, it is indeed the MVPs, Turning My Heartbeat Up - oh for a return to those days.....

  • What's the song at the very beginning? I'm kind of new to northern soul.

  • @TheOdderOne

Turning my Heartbeat up by the MVPS

  • Cheers man, it's a great song.

  • I remember goin down to wigan the night they made that video it was a canny shit night i remember the lights being on all night and i spent all night dodging the cameras so my mam n dad wouldnt see me on the telly ,happy days

  • @wangwanjo ha ha ha me too...happy days eh..

  • @wangwanjo good love you i think i had the same parents, xx

  • if the play Once upon a time in wigan is still showing go and see this . this is another great piece about northern Soul.

  • Thanks GeorgieWingates! It is Rosemary's Baby - probably the best bit if the entire tune. Thanks also for the tip about the play. You're what YouTube's all about. Have a good un. KTF.

  • went to wigan in November with my son where they sceened the film it was great, we both enjoyed it. They have re released the video about this and its a social comment of the time. The manager of the casino died i think he committed sucide. Saw it in the video of the strange world of northern soul. another good video love the music keep the faith

  • Does anyone know the awesome Instrumental / or Intro to the tune with the repetitive brass at 14:45-15:00?

Sidra's Theme - Ronnie and Robyn

  • Hi Mr Stroph, the track at 14:30-15:00 (with the old chap taliking about life down pit) is definitely NOT 'Sidras Theme' - I've just played it again and know Sidras Theme well. The track I need info on has firing brass and keyboards and there's not a harp in sight. Anyone know as I'm gagging for it!

  • If I can help it's "Rosemarys Baby" by Richard Popcorn Wylie and was supposedly his tribute to the scary (well, at that time) movie of the same name.I only ever went to Wigan once sadly as it was a bit of a trek from Northampton but was a regular at Notts Palais ,as for Wigan my feet were off the floor all the way up the stairs that's how packed it was, stompers and floor packers, keep the faith! Dave.

  • I'm pretty sure that track is Rosemary (what happened) by Richard Popcorn Wylie...hope that helps

  • Does anyone know the awesome Instrumental / or Intro to the tune with the repetitive brass at 14:45-15:00? Really appreciate it as I must hear it in full. Fantastic film and a scene which set the ground for clubbing and all dance music in the UK in the C21st.

  • I agree with oscarelgy, northern soul was the music of working class youth of a particular era. But what I really like about this documentary is how it contextualizes the music: it's not just good songs or a lifestyle but a response to the misery of working class life - despite bad wages and no future, people still managed to have a bit of fun. I think that's the meaning of the Socialist Worker clips - the struggle for socialism is about creating the kind of community the Casino embodied.

  • What a wicked doco .... those guys could dance!

    I've been a mod,a skin & a soulie fer yonks.

    Luv all this stuff !

    Keep the faith.

  • wigan casino was a great club for dancing,I still have a picture of myself with baggy trousers and long hair....OMG!

  • Great documentary. My brother went to the casino in the late 70s. I was much too Young.

  • lets face it this was a way of life,,its just fortunate we are all more experienced these days,,,racism and general hatred are things we have dealt with and should be consined to the pages of history............

  • fascinating vid especially for a househead in the u.s. what is the northern soul movement's connection with labor?

  • there is no particular connection, but in the north a traditional tamla sound was preferred and this is the area of england which also traditionally was the manufacturing engine of the country, like detroit was in u.s.

  • i always chose to go for a swim after and the long drive back to wimbledon . pat 78

  • i was there

  • Who sang the version of "What?" that we see in this video? I never realized Soft Cell had covered that song! And I like this version!!

  • Judy Street - What

  • Thank you very much!

  • @Valizan Judy Street so I believe!

  • She must be pretty obscure, I can't seem to find her song on Itunes or anywhere else.

  • Rare Northern Soul Record. It's very unlikely to be on i-tunes. Thousands of excellent tracks aren't!

  • Is it so rare that it isn't on any CD either? I've seen quite a few Northern Soul collections and any leads would be super.

::sighs:: This is what happens when you fall in love with music... ;-)

  • You'll find it on the Goldmine CD "The Wigan Casino Story" (GSCD 51). Don't know if its still available, but shouldn't be too hard to find second hand.

  • Ee burr it were grim OOp North, but we still managed to come up with some of the greatest sound ever played and we keep on doing it forty years leter on roll on Soul in the Sun. Lanzarote. 2009

  • the grim grim north :(

  • You clearly need a reality check-Arrogance is an extremely unsavory trait in people- you obviously are a little "up your own " shall we say .......best music and people on the planet!

  • the casino was for soul dancing the best underground music that ever was and still is keep the faith

  • enjoyed watching this this!

  • xisacunt is a total prick

  • Suberb video,Wigan Casino a very special place,i remember my older brother going there, late seventies.Keep The Faith...

  • Blimey I remember watching this with a few school mates because my mates brother was in it (dark looking fella called Eddie bumming a fag of a girl who is looking in her bag)

It made me look more into the music and eventually made my first 400 mile round trip on my own to see Martha Reeves there in feb 1978.....

  • dont push at the back ....lol

  • working class kids with an attitude. I loved it.

  • wigan was for the druggies

what about the more classy venues

    blackpool mecca and samanthas

when i think of wigan joe 90 always springs to mind and sea cruise, what rubbish,no wonder kev roberts vacated

  • Your problem with druggies being?

  • Fair enough, some dodgy tunes were spun at Wigan in its "commercial" period, but outside of that it was wall to wall classics.

  • yep dodgy tunes and dodgy baccy

  • @mansfieldfolkhouse yep he did, to make money out of people not for the love of it!

  • Long live Northern Soul! London's 100 Club tomorrow will be celebrating 30 years of the all-nighters there!! Keep the faith!!

  • omg its a way of life!!!! what the fuck is your life???? im pointing the finger at the sad people that dont get it with the silly comments cause thats what they are.....silly! crack on the northern hinnys! wooooooooooooooooooooooo xxxxxxxx

  • why do people have to be so harsh with the comments with this scene? why do these people watch the video even? it's not breakdancing, sure, but it's just super spirited as well! This footage is super and a great document. The first song is a song by a Canadian band called RAIN, and has become a N.Soul anthem, to this day! Get the point people, this scene helped people rise from the doldrums of living. Lighten up people, or you will sink further into ignorance.

  • forgive the morons, they are probably disciples of pop idol and britains got talent

  • your from Mansfield and presumably like folk music...enuff said !

  • the ashes enough said

  • yanks and kangaroo shaggers got no time for em

  • how northern soul uplifted people's lives back then!!

  • Nice people, of Northern Soul....

    k t f

  • The dancing styles for Northern Soul are incredible - I will ALWAYS love the tracks and the dancing. TIMELESS

Slaves fight back with beautiful SOUL

  • Donzo

  • 10:44 Give us any chance, we'll take it. Give us any rule, we'll break it. We're gonna make our dreams come true. Doin' it our way. Nothin's gonna turn us back now, Straight ahead and on the track now. We're gonna make our dreams come true, Doin' it our way. There is nothing we won't try, Never heard the word impossible. This time there's no stopping us. We're gonna do it.
  • Really amazing video. My Dad is in his 50's now, and this is his scene. Really great to be able to see a little bit of what it was like, all be it from a media perspective, a little different from the nightclub scene of today! Great music though, I will always have a deep respect for Northern Soul. Thanks for the upload!

  • I wasnt quite old enough to go to Wigan Casino, but remember it well, love looking at the fashions of the day, parallel trousers, I had two pair, one electric blue, and bottle green, also vaguely remember the jumpers, particularly the ones with a v neck and three bright yellow stars across the chest lol

  • anyone know the song playing whilst the young girl is being interviewed please

  • grass roots!

  • I was a rock fan and went to festivals and stuff so this wasn't my scene but I remmbr guys I worked with in a factory would regularly go off for the whole weekend, sleeping on train stations etc. They were dedicated to their music and they and others like them made the whole thing happen, not some promoter, more power to them.

  • total respect to working class england, i'm one who speaks for us all and for you goverment. go fuck yourselves! all i've heard on my grandparents death beds is youve ruined the dear old blighty, fuck you!!
