@sammytheshark1 Sorry for the delayed response. The answer is yes you can dependingonthe turtle. Each turtle is different, but if they are both calm turtle they will go together nicely. Especially because the mud will like the lower oart of the tank and the reeves will swim up high more.
@FrostyBadBoi I only use plastic plants in mine or they will try to eat them, so it you are going to use live plants in your tank make sure it wont harm your turtle. You can sometimes find large rocks in pet stores but I tend to pick some up from my garden but where ever you find them make sure you wash them really well.
thinking of getting a reeves sometime next month....do anyone know of where i can get one of the bigger tanks from?...im in the uk....i looked up 30 gallon long and found it but it costs too much to ship it to uk and i dont reaally trust the shipping overseas with a fragile item
awesome video btw....they look really happy....good job :)
@FrostyBadBoi I get my turtle tanks custom built from a local reptile shop, but looking around online sometimes you can find a good quality second hand tank somewhere. I also have a Reeves and they make great pets :)
I read with great interest ur comment on small size turtle and noted that 2 species (hardy species) are mentioned, namely Mud Turtle and Musk Turtle. was wondering, is there any other species that is of similar small size when reaching adulthood?..pls advise me on it. thanx.,
@hhujan69 Well there are male painted, male map turtles and reeves turtles. I would recommend reeves turtles, but that's just me. Spotted turtles always are an option, they aren't the most hardy but they stay small and don't need a lot of space. Those are the most common that stay small. They range in prices and availability. The cheapest and smallest would be the common musk turtle. Some say they are great, but I enjoy the basking breeds. Pick wisely and you'll be fine.
@antomio84029 am currently looking to get maybe musk turtle or the reeves turtle. I read from wiki tat reeves turtle are also called as chinese pond turtle. not? and conservation is listed as threatened. ok ok..i'm not here to bitch bout awareness and stuff. Just wanna confirm, is that the right one tat we r talking about.
@hhujan69 I'm not sure if they are the same turtles. I do know that reeves turtles are not threatened. They are native to the USA. They have been bread for the pet trade here in the USA. In Asia they are all over, they are one of the most prevalent Asia turtle species. If the Chinese pond turtle is threatened then I would say they are not the same species.
@KevinIsM8ig Sure you can. It depends on your set up. Reeves aren't the best swimmers. I wouldn't put a reeves turtle in more than 12 inches of water. Most red ear and yellow belly sliders get huge and need huge tanks, so if they are in a 50 gallon or 75 gallon tank with the water to the very top I would hesitate to put a reeves turtle in that kind of set up. But all turtles are different, so it depends on you and your turtle.
I think my filter the Fluval 405 is great. I just clean it every 2 to 3 months. I don't really know what to tell you, other than my experience with the Fluval has been great.
I've bought a fluval canister filter before and it didn't work out for me. The tubes and inside of the filter which I can't get into gets clogged by the poop. I did whatever I can with what I could clean but the water would get dirty with poop particles when I turned the filter on. Do you have any particular filter you would recommend?
Are Reeves turtles truly the smallest you can buy? I'm a 49 year old woman with a set up ready to buy a turtle....I have researched all the breeds but am still unsure if the Reeves will remain the smallest. Thanks!
@onogirludidn There are a few water turtle options depending on your budget. There are spotted turtles that stay small but are expensive and a little harder to care for because they are picky eaters and require a certain level of acidic water. Male map turtles are also great, in particular texas maps, but unless you get an adult you're risking getting a giant female. Lastly there are mud and musk turtles that stay small, but they don't really bask much. Reeves are the funnest in my opinion.
@Hmach4r Everything I have is second hand from classifieds so it cost less than it could have. In total for everything it was about $225. If you buy equipment at a pet store a set up like this would be about $400.
@fudge90 Not much at all. Just one or two pellets every day. Some feed their turtle every third day all they can eat for a minute, while giving plenty of veggies on the off days. So in a nut shell not much.
@antomio84029 One or two pellets a day? Isn't that too little? I've read care sheets that said to feed an amount the size of their head to ones that said to feed as much as they can eat in 15 minutes. One or two pellets seems like a miniscule amount. You also got a pretty badass setup there, I have a Reeve's turtle too along with a Common Snapper and a Leopard Tortoise.
@kvngip It depends on the size of the turtle and the pellets. Baby turtles won't need more than one to two pellets a day with veggies mixed in the diet. You're right about an adult needing more. I personally feed mine more but not too much. I was assuming they were thinking about getting a baby turtle. Thanks for letting me clarify.
@soonthespoonable Because they don't get along. The males of this species are sex fiends, and tend to pester the females. They aren't old enough to breed so I separated them for the time being.
This is an excellent set up with plenty of land area, correct lighting for essential vitamins, great filtration and good depth of water for swimming with good resting areas. Well done!
hey, i was planning on getting a male and a female reeves for my turlte tub, but I was just wondering why you separated them? Is it because they were not getting along? I heard that males get really aggressive, and tend to pester, harrass, and bite the female reeves. Please let me know, thanks. Any other tips would be appreciated, im trying to learn as much as possible before I make a decision. Thanks in advance.
I really like your setup I also got a 20 gallon long with 3 res two baby's and 1 bout 3" I also got a zoomed 501 n my water is never that clean I do a complete water change but in a week is cloudy (white foggy water) any tip would really b helpful thanks
@Omy375 With three RES's in one tank seems a little much in my opinion. You'll probably just have to get a bigger filter/tank. You'll definitely need to get a bigger tank some day.
Your Reeves Turtles are sooo Gorgeous! What kid of Reeves turtles are they exactly?? and did you order them or buy them in a pet store. I can't decied weather to get a Mud turtle or a Reeves
@antomio84029 I tried to post the website, but it won't allow me to post a link so I'm just going to wright it out. It is the website kingsnake then finish it how you would normally.
@doggieblacks They can eat them, but I would not feed them grapes and bananas on a daily basis. I would think of them more as treats than a staple part of their diet.
@kissoce Yeah, I'm sure they are reeves turtles. They aren't that old yet, they are only about 1 year and 3 months old. They aren't that melanistic yet and I think they will eventually get darker but for now I'm enjoying their color. Thanks for the comment.
@kissoce Well it's only about 10 inches deep. The tank is a 30 gallon long, so it's more long than high. I think a lot of people baby their pets, while we really need to remember that they are wild animals and have survived for years with no help from us.
@RDRxPUNISH3Rx They are ghost shrimp. Most people use them mostly for "feeder fish." They are really active and fun to watch, and they aren't great swimmers so my turtle can catch them a little easier.
I separated the pair because the male would not stop harassing the female, nipping and attempts to mount her. She is too young to produce eggs, so it was pointless to keep them together for now. I built it with plexi-glass and silicone.
