Ok you would like a video to show the body movement that is required for the sweep roll? Sweep roll being sweeping out on the surface, snapping the hip and coming up slightly to the back of sitting up straight?
Is that the one you are talking about. Yes there is a body movement for that.
I love your videos but why is it everyone films the rolls from the face? I think it would be much more helpful to also show from behind (how we would be doing it instead of the mirror image).
very good point....I thought about that alot...in fact when i demonstrate to my students on dry land I have them behind so they can copy the same body movement. For sure in the next video it will have some key view from behind. Thanks so much for the comment. You are spot on.
I agree with that comment from a month ago, but i think that movements from the front are also neccessary as its easier to see what the blade of the paddle is doing which is key in most rolls. Isn't it? But the only way to truly make sure people understand a roll in my view, is to do it for them. What i mean is, when your teaching them tell them to follow the body movements with the paddle and have a loose grip, whilst the instructor controls the blade and movement so they get a feel for the it!
your videos are amazing and your explanation superb. The best and clearest description I have ever seen of a kayak roll. Could you do this with a sea kayak next. Your theory about teaching rolling before bracing makes so much sense. Well done.
Thanks for the comments. Next up in December is the hand roll and then the sea kayak roll. Appreciate the comment. My theory on the roll before brace works well if you have time to teach it before you are out on rough water. IF your student is going out right away I would teach the brace so they can survive day 1. But I am convinced the best way is to take the time to teach the roll well before the brace and well before they go out in whitewater. This way their confidence builds from the start
Really Good. I am a class IV boater and I will attest to the fact that all kayakers need to learn a stress free roll that does not stress the shoulder joints. Or you will end up injured , I know. My roll is better since I injured my shoulders because now I have to keep my elbows in tighter and use my torso twist and hip snap. Now my roll is way more effortless. Why did I not learn this at first. I taught myself. Then I took a class later. Wrong Order.
Hey, A Tremendous Thanks for these great videos. My friend taught me to roll the first night at the pool 2 wks ago and we went kayaking the next day down the easy part of the Trinity. Yesterday was my 4th time and I'm upside down a lot because my friends have me working the Class II rivers to death, eddy out / in, ferrying, surfing, ect. But its OK because I'm pretty darn sure I'm getting back up on my own. Your back deck sweep roll was super instructive to me. Cant wait for the bracing videos.
I will do a video on braces. Actually I feel like a very good roll is key to have before the braces. Many people disagree by saying that you do not have to roll if you have a good brace. I have seen many people tweak their shoulder by slapping hard incorrect braces because they do not want to go upside down. I want to make my students while they are learning not care about going over and learn 100 percent confidence in the roll....Then teach the brace. A minority opinion. but experience has
im learning now and i agree with you 100% I want to keep rolling and rolling until i can almost guarantee getting it right every time. Only then will i really feel happy and safe.
great videos, have you thought of posting how to hand roll? ive been paddling for about 4-5 years in Western Australia and have just learned to hand roll and am finding it very hard to explain to people that aske me how to do it, it would be good if i could just tell them to look it up on youtube
Should be the same if the outfitting is secure in the sea kayak. Usually because of the stock outfitting in a sea kayak is not as good. I recommend something like the twist and slice or back deck roll for a sea kayak. However if the knee hooks are strong and you feel like you are locked into your kayak with your thighs. Then the C to C roll is also awsome and powerful. BUT YOU NEED that solid control and contact with the kayak in the C to C roll.
Ahh, like wheres the roll. all talk and no action?

Thank you very much. I am just beginning and I find that the the twist and slice works the best for me.

Is it much harder to roll in a 13 foot sea kayak than a short one like in this video?
