Surf wipeouts are gnarlier than skate and snowboard wipeouts when at this scale, a few of those waves, if you were to bail, youd die. Big waves weigh hundreds of tons, not to mention that they hold you under water for a long time and also not to mention that you could get slammed into a reef under the water, which is a common occurrence.

We used to fantasize giant waves. Remember that 60's surf poster called "incredible Journey"? It was a graphic of this guy, looking v. tiny, carving a right bottom turn at the base of this 120+' pitching tube. A 1985 Honolulu Advertiser edition had a front page photo of Laird dropping in at 3rd Reef Pipeline (he was towed by a Zodiac). That's what it looked like.
