Seriously...'Well done!' Leonardo was a people watcher, spending hours upon hours observing people around him to gain insight into human expression and emotion. To Leonardo, a portrait painting should not only capture the likeness of the subject as close to reality as may be achieved, but also to capture an emotion or expression that speaks to what is in the soul. For a painting that achieves both it is said to be alive! The Mono Lisa is alive in the painting.

well, that's just like what she said with da vinci. if you peeled back the layers of paint from his paintings, everything was either in a different position or a different color. that's just how artists' work--they can never make up their minds so they change and play with their paintings before it's completed. lots and lots of paint wasted! lol BUT, defiantly worth the outcome =)

I saw the Mona Lisa once. It was smaller than I expected. Sure, Leonardo was a genius, but I think I may like yours better. I once wrote a "Moonlighting" script just for fun which involved the Mona Lisa. I called it (get ready to groan) "Take the Mona and Run." :)

When I was a little girl the mona lisa looked like an old woman to me. Now that I'm older I see her as being very young....lol. My art history teacher told me she saw the mona lisa painting in Paris. She said there were so many people crowded around it that it took her quite a while to get an 'up close look'. I LOVE you're mona lisa rendition Val.

Yes, i's all in the eyes and that secretive smile... Like she is lauhing at us and saying, "I know something that you don't know!" There are so many crazy storires about The Mona Lisa, one is that it is really Leonardo himself and I think they found the woman who the portrait was of.

I've seen the mona lisa a couple of times in Paris. It is such a tiny painting in real life ^^

Leonardo always took things apart to see how they worked. He was a very interesting man. He drew sketches for many modern inventions that weren't invented at the time, i.e. the hang-glider and the helicopter. He very probably a sort of genius.
