I don't think she grasps the sad part of this song... Esp. around 2:46 where she sings "i lost the best baby I ever had, I wish I had a river.." etc she sings it kinda ecstatically, and in my humble opinion it's actually sad (since Mitchell had to give up her baby for adoption and she now wishes, in the song, to escape the "joy and peace" songs of Xmas and skate away to somewhere darker..)

I think the way she interprets that part is beautiful, albeit out of context in terms of lyrics. I always thought that all the references to babies in that song seemed out of place... It all makes sense now :)

I purchased this CD by Herbie Hancock called River the Joni Letters, on which this is the title track. The whole CD is amazing! It was released in 2007. I picked up a used copy at Ameoba Music in Los Angeles. If you have a chance pick it up and listen to the whole album.

every aspect of this recording is amazing from Joni Mitchell's lyrics to the color and emotion of Herbie's piano, Tal Wilkenfeld on bass adds the warmth to this track, Wayne Shorter's saxophone though sparse adds a compliment to Herbie's piano runs.
