Ill be honest. These guys looked poor and likely didnt have much else to work with. All things considered, the whole thing took less that a minute and they seemed to be genuinely trying as much as possible to see that the animal suffered minimally. Death through loss of blood would would induce weakness folowed by tiredness and into unconciousness within one minute. A cut to the trachea would not speed the process up but only cause more suffering through not being able to breath and literally drown in its own blood as it tries to breath.

In an ideal condition the animal by western approval would have been rendered unconcious although this may not be acceptable by culture but a small inciscion to the main artery rather than a sawing action would limit pain and the animal would simply die from loss of blood.

Hey, we don't slaughter all our animals like this. Regular humane slaughter is how most of the cows end up, usually performed by the large contingent of Afrikaans and English farm owners. I've never heard anything about slaughtering the cows in a particular fashion, this is probably just tradition.
