@LexIoana Theres 2 reasons why they took him, 1.They couldnt have children, so whenever children came to the island they took them, children are asier to "brainwash", 2. Walt had a special gift(Telekenisis, astral projection ect) and they were curious and wanted to understand it(Remember these powers were a part of study for the DI too) however during an experiment Walt killed a flock of birds(Telekenisis), this scared the others and this is why they allowed him to leave.

the first time eco sees smokey he is MENTALLY TOO STRONG for him. why? simply because in ecos flashbacks he remembers his brother. (that's what makes him 'strong')
the second time they meet eco is kinda like jack: because he feels responsible for his brothers death, ecos will weakened. since smokey can SCAN memories, it's easy for him to see what eco is thinking a.t.m.
with thinking of yemi, eco gave smokey an opening, which smokey used.
btw: asking eco for a confession is part of smokeys masquerade (that's why 'Yemi' is surprised as eco says 'i not asked for the life I was given, but nonetheless it was given.'; smokey neither asked for his life)

Dude. This is a complete fail of a monster. Me and my classmates watched the pilot episode of 'Lost' in English, media studies and was all exited and interest about what the 'monster' was. Next day after seeing it on the internet we all laughed at how pathetic it was. We all was expecting some type of dinosaur or something, and OK you want to surprise the viewer, but not in a bad way...
@t3trojans I think the monster just grows on you to be honest, like episode after episode, the monster has more to it (I don't want to spoil it, but lets just say it has sort of a judgement on the characters development), and it becomes of an symbolic figure. Especially at the last few seasons the monster is so much more then you think.

I think this smoke, black storm cloud (as I like to see it =3) had to be the best effect which would look good and fit in scenery. The show isn't low budget, but it was still a tv show, and I think a dinosaur would look absolutely horrible LOL.

Why: Coming in contact with the source changed him, for some reason, into the monster and he is dangerous due to his granted powers and his desire to leave the island, since his youth, at any cost. THATS IT.
I wish they would've at least known what it was when they created it. But they didn't.How do I know that? They created Jacob 2 Seasons after Smokey. However, the whole concept of the MIB doesn't work without Jacob,which shows that they were too lazy to come up with a detailed solution for Smokey and just thought of MiB as an easy emergency solution.You can tell that they had a different explanation in mind when they showed Smokey in the first 3 seasons.
@ChocolateFlux your probably right because the creators themselves have stated that they reached a creative bind during the third season which was led to the decision to end the series in three seasons in order to save the show and set a date where everything would come together. But now that we know theres very little point in pondering it now.
@ChocolateFlux Jacob was around since season 2 when Henry Gale (Ben) mentions the man in charge is a great man. Add all the black and white imagery from earlier and you can see the Jacob/Smokey thing was a possibility early on. For the detailed solution there were interviews where it was mentioned audience interpretation was key instead of going the Star Wars route where the force was explained in too much detail as midichlorians.

It let him live because the first two times they met, Eco is mentally too strong for it.
The third time they meet Eco is surprised and takes a few steps back. Smoky takes this advantage and attacks Eco.

the first time eco sees smokey he is MENTALLY TOO STRONG for him. why? simply because in ecos flashbacks he remembers his brother. (that's what makes him 'strong')
the second time they meet eco is kinda like jack: because he feels responsible for his brothers death, ecos will weakened. since smokey can SCAN memories, it's easy for him to see what eco is thinking a.t.m.
with thinking of yemi, eco gave smokey an opening, which smokey used.

@Tschiyeah I dont think so. as a cynic of the series and one who believes the show was made u as it went along, this still seems to fit into F-lock's usual game of manipulating faith to his cause. he killed because he liked it, nothing more, but richard, locke and eco all survived encounters with Smokey because he wanted to use them for his ultimate goal of killing Jacob. it took Smokey the six seasons, but being centuries old with a singular purpose of escape makes you very old, and VERY smart

no question that he killed eco because eco would have got in MIBs way (killing jacob), because eco was such a good guy.
but what I mean is: The first time mib simply wasn't allowed to touch eco! So when mib confused eco (through being Yemi) mib fullfilled some kind of law, so that the he could kill eco the second time around!

Of course it is strange that cloud can brake trees, but if you think more... Smoke may change its weight. I like photo shot sound that it makes, but its strange how it makes sound of "puling some kind of chain on the wheel, like an anchor or what ever". Dude. This is a complete fail of a monster. Me and my classmates watched the pilot episode of 'Lost' in English, media studies and was all exited and interest about what the 'monster' was. Next day after seeing it on the internet we all laughed at how pathetic it was. We all was expecting some type of dinosaur or something, and OK you want to surprise the viewer, but not in a bad way...

@t3trojans I think the monster just grows on you to be honest, like episode after episode, the monster has more to it (I don't want to spoil it, but lets just say it has sort of a judgement on the characters development), and it becomes of an symbolic figure. Especially at the last few seasons the monster is so much more then you think.

I think this smoke, black storm cloud (as I like to see it =3) had to be the best effect which would look good and fit in scenery. The show isn't low budget, but it was still a tv show, and I think a dinosaur would look absolutely horrible LOL.
Even the first few slight appearances of smokey looked like a photoshop =3

What: The smoke monster. Where: The Island. When: for thousands of years since he was born. Why: Coming in contact with the source changed him, for some reason, into the monster and he is dangerous due to his granted powers and his desire to leave the island, since his youth, at any cost. I wish they would've at least known what it was when they created it. But they didn't.How do I know that? They created Jacob 2 Seasons after Smokey. However, the whole concept of the MIB doesn't work without Jacob,which shows that they were too lazy to come up with a detailed solution for Smokey and just thought of MiB as an easy emergency solution.You can tell that they had a different explanation in mind when they showed Smokey in the first 3 seasons.

@ChocolateFlux Jacob was around since season 2 when Henry Gale (Ben) mentions the man in charge is a great man. Add all the black and white imagery from earlier and you can see the Jacob/Smokey thing was a possibility early on. For the detailed solution there were interviews where it was mentioned audience interpretation was key instead of going the Star Wars route where the force was explained in too much detail as midichlorians.
