  • is it just me or does this guy's voice sound like Ernie from Sesame street sometimes?

  • no doubt this song is playing in stephen harpers head as he whores out Canada's natural resources to the fucking chinese for a few dollars in HIS pockets

  • @monkeyswrenchs fuckin eh$!

  • i actually helped john rite this song, we were both selling used dinner ware sets and asking our selves why we do these things for money. And then it came back to me, METH!

  • Jay Semko rocks \m/

  • anyone know where I can get the instrumental for this? I love the sound but the vocals are crap imho. The whole "paaaaaaaaaalm of myyy haaaanndd" totally ruins what is otherwise epic guitar, drums and bassline

  • they ought to re-release this as "the Wall Street song"

  • @dexterriley How about "American National Anthem 2.0"?

  • @dexterriley they ought tell you to shut up

  • great stuff!!

  • through the glass copied this 100%

  • awesome ~:0)

  • I get goosebumps everytime that big guitar kicks in at 2:09.

  • @TheConcertMack same for me my firend

  • What a good song! Us canadians are talented!

  • @MrJsaville Cough* Justin beiber cough* but these guys are :D

  • @Eli451000 *cough*stfu*cough*... enough b.s. references to whats-his-face, Canadian or not (and I am). So annoying. Make a reference to this video or good music, or, according to your logic, Celine Dion or Michael Buble. Shutup kid.

  • @MrJsaville No Doubt that Canada is really awesome :D

  • I saw Jay Semko do a solo performance of this last night. I actually liked it better than this.

  • One M 00:00 RE Time!

  • Man I miss the late 80s music. Pikes, Gowan, Platinum Blonde, TFF, Cars, Corey Hart, Honeymoon Suite...I could go on and on.

  • Anybody notice the Andrew Wyeth reference?

  • Best audio engineering ever, un-real recording. Up there with the likes of Floyd or Rush, even think of Tool recording this song, would be some good shit.

  • Oh, love this song @lauranbri. Thanks so much for sharing it.

Jay Semko is the composer for our new series Dust Up, and he's done a fantastic job. The shows premiering in Canada now on History Television now. @lauranbri @Hkhan23, @blueskymaiden, you're all invited to check it out. Trailers on our channel page - we'd love to hear what you think!

  • the singer sounds like kermit the frog

  • SASKATCHEWAN

  • @brodeep815 you put it so elegantly!

  • I think that The Northern Pikes are one of the best bands. I am very proud to be from Canada (Newfoundland) and I am sad to hear the swearing in music today. I love the music from the UK, USA, Canada, heck all the world pretty much and they did not have to call a woman a Bit*c to get a hit song. No heart today in music but that's just my opinion.

  • @MrSuperfriends Fuck shit bitch nigga?

  • @JustinHailTheBC go get some help....you need it!

  • Comment removed

  • @MrSuperfriends lol Im just joking obviously. I think someone needs to remove copious amounts of sand out of their vagina.. That's just my opinion.

  • @JustinHailTheBC Are you talking from experience?....lol

  • @MrSuperfriends lol yeah I've seen my share of sandy vaginas. They arent difficult to spot.

  • Anyone remember this during the Parking Meter Heist scene in Trailer Park Boys: The Movie?

  • @RileyRichardz

Same street as the Rush concert ticket fiasco I do believe?

  • And up next, Platinum Blonde - Crying Over You.

  • isnt that a map on world at war?

  • I am pretty sure I read somewhere (about twenty years ago) that the video for "Things I Do For Money" was filmed in East Coulee, Alberta (just SouthWest of Drumheller). As a fellow Saskatchewanian, I have driven through Drumheller dozens of times ... but have never ventured over to East Coulee to see if the town has several of the mining related setting portrayed in this video. The boys from Saskatchewan went West to get some better visuals, I guess... .

  • yes we do i very proud canadian!! ty all that think canada rocks!! muhwaaaaaaaaaaa !!!!

  • ? drivvel.....

  • I love this song! I aspire to be an artist when I get older, and this song lets a lot of creativity flow out of me. I've drawn so many things inspired by this song! And I never knew this band was Canadian, I'm very happy to be a Canadian!:D

  • @piratelovergirl101 Haha, I saw the top two lines of this comment and scrolled down because I thought it was one of my own that I'd left a while ago. If you live in Manitoba message me, I don't mean to be impertinent but I'm desperate to find someone to songwrite with, you never know . . .

  • @elginxxxman Haha, nice! But I live in British Columbia so sorry :\ sounds great though

  • @piratelovergirl101 Yeah, it's a case of Jagger for Richards, if I can be bold enough to make that comparison, haha. I'll find someone out there!

  • The singer is good, but only the music would be good.

  • it's a fantastic song but the video is super boring. Fortunatly the song is able to stand on it's own without the vid

  • The cool thing about this band is that all the guitar players(bass included) do lead vocals.

  • I've done some pretty horrible things for money. This song reminds me of these things. Taxes are a bitch these days.

  • The best artist out of Saskatoon since Joni Mitchell! The DJ introducing the song said the band was from northern Canada. As an American boy, I'm thinking Yellowknife or something! Then I lost the mix tape and forgot all about the band. The record turned up at a tag sale years later. Glad I found it!

  • Canadian bands are so under-rated. Northern Pikes, Barenaked Ladies, April Wine, Guess Who. Rush has never been underrated . But id deffinatley like to throw in my aprreciation for them. Cuz Rush is fucken Epic.

  • sounds like old depeche mode but i love it

  • I love my life. This song reminds me why. I better finish my drink and get to class.

  • @SatanicRatEater Rock on

  • This is one of the greatest songs ever written about the evil rich. Just great Canadian talent at work. The whole album is awesome. It was great to see that good music that was true and had an emotional heart didn't disappear after the 60s and 70s. Thanks lauranbri.

  • It's one of their most progressive and complex song. I really like it.

  • I appreciate this song and group way more now than I did at the time.I took for granted and never appreciated how many great Canadian groups there were when I grew up.

  • Ricky takes out parking meters , this song is in the background. so perfect.

    trailer park boys rule

  • i've always loved this song go canada!!!! <3

  • Does anyone know where i can get a Mp3 download for this or somethin?

  • @speedpunk26 It's available on i tunes store.

  • The Pikes are playing Lockeport NS. Aug 14th

  • the guitar is simply awesome in this song

  • This is a fantastic song. WOW! I love it.

  • Most bands would kill to have a song stand the test of time, this does.

  • from Poland: where I was young I saw Due South, and I remember jay semko. So good rock !

  • The things I do for money, I’ll never understand

I used to be quite critical, but now I find I’m cynical

A lady with a starving baby miles away from me

No problems they’re just life and death

And what the hell is wrong with me

    And everybody else

Great lyrics.. I'd be proud to ever write anything like that.

What a great band.. Thanks for uploading this video.

It brings back a lot of memories.

  • What an eerie, amazing song! Love it!

  • Awesome tune & band that stands the test of time!

"The world is just a marble in the palm of my hand..."

  • I get goose bumps every time I listen to this song.Canadian Goose bumps ;)

  • i could listen to that solo over and over and never get bored

  • this is THE BEST song to come out of canada too bad these guys never got more fame they rock!!!

  • i am so glad for youtube... without it where would i get such classics. awesome...just awesome! whoever posted this is a hero

  • Great song. I actually like this better than "She Ain't Pretty".

  • Awesome! Typical Canadian 80's rock. god love it.

  • good song, but bad video

  • Good tune. Saw these guys open for The Alarm.

  • grewat fucking song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The 80's were the best I hate all this pop crap

  • Sweet song.

  • their best tune, imo. awesome band.

  • these guys fuckin rule!

  • Cool tune... Guitar sounds a little "Edge" inspired

  • the badlands of badass Canada!!!

  • love this song

  • BItches are a tax these days.....

  • this is a great song, and the lyrics are very true!

  • Canada 4 the Win!

  • hah great song and band typical canadian no budget for videos lol

  • Saw the Pikes Last friday; Amazing show - tight and entertaining. Great guys!

  • Where???

  • Dartmouth Nova scotia...Monte's bar and grill

  • Congratulations.

  • I really like the way the guitarist palms the guitar. Thats a lost sound that you don't hear much anymore.

  • @carriersignal

I was thinking that the other day - such an awesome sound which was used well in the 80s; if I were a producer working today...!

  • dude man the drummer is my uncle. so as a drummer myself think how i feel

  • Embarassed and ashamed?

  • lier the drummer is my gramma

    dont kid around ehh

  • This video blows my mind every time I see it. Amazing song, musically, intellectually....

  • I agree Regina...Saskatoon here...good stuff !

  • Oh yeah!

  • Bryan Potvin is such an incredibly under-rated guitar player. Check out some of the live videos on youtube to get an idea. Absolutely amazing.

  • Always liked these guys..cant believe its 20 yrs..I worked as a waiter a hotel in Kitchener back then..I rememeber they stayed there and started talking guess they were bored, said meeting some friens down at the "Keg" had a pretty good bar downstairs then..got REALLY drunk and was given free pass for the next night show. .. a bar called "Stage's" for those who might remember that place.

  • Does anyone know where the video was filmed

  • Somewhere is Saskatchewan I'd imagine as the band is from Saskatoon.

  • Yup, it was filmed around Drumheller, Alberta. The guy with the bicycle was a friend of mine living in the theatre town of Rosebud, AB. I remember him coming back after the day of shooting and they were all very excited about capturing a lightening bolt in the last scene. Look for it to the right of Doug/bike guy, just as he's picking up the bike to shoulder it. Cool!

  • awsome thanks, it looked too hilly to be Sask, it has a great feel to it in this video.

  • Good call - the badlands of Alberta.

    What an awesome band.

  • definately one of the best live bands ever, totally tight

  • total prarie farm house

  • CANADIANS ARE SO TALENTED

  • @Hkhan23 Very true but Your comment would of ment more if you wer'nt a Canadain....

  • @SuperDarkDefender lol true

  • @Hkhan23 thank you :)

  • @Hkhan23 all but one

  • @Hkhan23 hear, hear!

  • What a great song. Love the delay guitar. Such an underrated band

  • "i scrape and scheme and struggle hard to get myself ahead, i have no concern for anyone but me..."

    they know the drill.

  • this is one of my all time favourites....strikes a chord

  • Things too easily forgotten....

  • This song and band has definitely got to be one of the most under rated songs and bands of all time. Increadible lyrics, message, delivery, composition, and best of all ..... simply canadian. Cheers!

  • It's really a shame that a lot of Canadian bands didn't make much of an impact internationally - the Pikes, Payola$, Rough Trade, Big Sugar, The Odds, among others. And of those who did have some worldwide success, most sucked more than a Shopvac - Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Crash Test Dummies.

  • why is it a shame? good music is where you find it. personally i'd rather, as a consumer catch the pikes or april wine or kim mitchell colin james whatever in a club with 700 or so others for a 20 buck cover rather than pay a C-note or better thru ticketmaster for crappy seats in a stadium..but hey thats me.

  • Let's not forget to add the Tragically Hip to this list. Or Chalk Circle. Or 5 Man Electrical Band. Or the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Or... There is plenty of Canadian talent that has been overlooked by the world. Hey, if they don't want it, then let's keep them our little secret.

  • Matt Good is a very under-rated Canuck too.

  • someone threw a shoe at his head at UBC...then he walked off stage...haha. probably got told to get back out there and did just that.

  • @dexterriley I'm inclined to agree with you.You see a group or artist at a club or a theatre setting and it tends to be more personable as well.

  • It sounds canadian. very good !

  • He kind of sounds like depeche mode in "enjoy the silence".

  • Bryan Potvin has been considered one of more underated Guitarist in Canadian Rock! It was too bad that Pikes wasn't an international super success because they were a talented band and were great to see live.

Jay Semko is an excellent singer songwriter and I hope he makes a full recovery from his alcohol addiction.

  • I AGREE...GOOD STATEMENT!

  • Nevermind "they WERE a talented band and WERE great to see live"...they still ARE! I saw them (again!) just a couple of months ago.

  • Definitely not my sound...but the guitars...wooow!!!

  • The Northern Pikes rock. This song is so amazing. Jay Semko delivers a great vocal & the guitars are cool.

  • The randy Rhoads comment is extreme but the tune is their best, imo.

  • OH CANADA!!!! oh yeah!!!

  • Fucking canada rocks.

  • Damn straight!!!

  • Also, Canada fucking rocks!

  • @XeriousRajax I grew up with this music. It's hard to take anything else seriously. Anytime someone uses the word "bitch" in reference to a woman, it makes me sad. I miss this type of music. Everyone was equal.

  • godddamn these guys were/are amazing. where's the amazing music like THIS in canada NOW?

  • & that guitar solo would make randy rhoads weep

  • the sparseness of the bass-line is just sublime

  • one of the great all time songs out of canada

  • Saskatoon ROCKS!!!!!!!

  • much darker than she aint pretty

  • the guy in the red strums a guitar when there is no guitar playing.

  • Listen closely at 02:42 for the acoustic guitar backing the solo. I've seen them in concert many times....oh yeah, it's there.

  • indeed an awesome song, and these guys from my hometown of SASKATOON :)

  • excellent song, excellent band....what else can you say...cheers all

  • ahh even though im young this is the stuff i was raised on

  • Rock out, man.

  • What did YOU do for money! I love this tune from a great canadian band.

  • I love it...THANKS

  • One of the best post song in 1987!
