Selected people have been given license to shoot grey squirrels, it hasn't happened much in the South, but in Northern England this has been practised for a while. They have also declared areas of coniferous woodland protected where large populations of red squirrels have been found. The decline of reds is mainly due to deforestation in the eighteenth century, so although the greys are more assertive, it's not solely their fault the reds are disappearing!

Yes thats true also, my comment was a rule of thumb. And yes genetics and type of animal do play a big part in it. After all some humans live longer than others as well as giant tortoises who live over 100 years.
