  • AWESOME, anyone trying to promote u2 in any way is top shelf in my book.

  • @71sleek

Thank you. See the "A" series tutorials for updated Bad tutorials in HD. This one is very old.

  • nice work man, the dog is the REAL star in the show. is he scratching himself or licking your elbow???

  • Yes ,he goes into great detail, I order a pizza and beer and watch all the videos before I ever begin to learn a song. I suppose since I was born in 78 and tried learning guitar before the advent of "interweb" (joke) that I appreciate someone like this guy who goes into such detail. What a fantastic FREE tutorial , I paid hundreds of dollars in the 90s as a teen for less than par tutorials than this. . THANKYOU U2guitartutorials !!

  • You really know how a guitar is played! you really know what you are doing!!

    great man!!

  • Great tutorial! Keep it up! :)

  • @cpjds1: "B" series is old. Check out the updated "A" series tutorials.

  • hi , can anybody help me please ,with the delay , I have a Pod xt live, but I wondered how many Ms I have to use? and as% of FDBK and MIX?

well as to Fdbk and Mix, so it appears in the pod xt when I go to edit the delay

  • @u2feedback1:

There are two sets of tutorials here. The "B" series is old and the "A" series is new. The answer to your questions are in these tutorials. Kee in mind, the ms setting depends on your BPM. It's a dotted 8th note delay time. The time is different depending on the speed you play. Watch all the tutorials. I explain this. You can use a delay time calculator (search the web) and calc the ms you need for the BPM you are playing to.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials oo I see , thank you very much , and good tutorial.

  • Nice dog :P

  • Great teacher! very good!

  • You teach very very well!!!!

  • U R the man! Thanks a lot for your perfect lessons!!

  • What tuning is this song in, cause Im in standard and it doesnt sound right at all

  • @darthsage411:

Many of U2's songs are tuned down 1/2 step when played live. I'm likely in Eb.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials oh ok, thanks

  • how many m.sec do i have to set this delay....sorry i have a boss dd-3 !!...thks

  • @viauf :

Dont remember exactly. Check out my Bad tutorial series. I have it there.

  • Cool Lesson Bud! thanks for sharing!

  • Hi Mike, mate do you read music?

  • @thephantomsguest :

Hi. No, I don't. I've learned some basic concepts through learning about the delay. I took a music theory class in college but forgot most if not all of it. I'm learning as I go. Wish I had more time. Very busy at work lately.

  • Hi great vid btw I just wondered if u could do a short vid demo explaining a variation the edge does on live performences. This variation is on the higher notes of the main riff, it sounds like he's pulling them of or something. A good example of this variation is U2 bad live dortmund . Cheers

  • @ANDREWlewisCELTIC :

I'll take a look at it and put it on my long list of to dos! Thx!

  • @ANDREWlewisCELTIC :

Sure, I'll add this to my "to do" list, but it will be a while. This is an old tutorial and needs to be updated. I need more time!

  • is there a certain tuning hes using cause when i play along the high E string sounds out of tune with my guitar and i just tuned it

  • @greatcomedian18 :

I might be tuned in Eb here. Try tuning 1/2 step down and see if that works.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials yeah thats what i ended up doing

  • Thanks. Got some EB Power Slinky's - 11, 14,18, 28,38,48. I'll let you know what happens.

  • What strings do you use suggest, and what gauge? I had Dean Markley mediums and popped one. I had a spare pack of Gibson ultralights I bought on sale awhile back, so I put them on and they sound rotten!!! (especially tuned flat) Now I know why they were the same price as the Boomers.

  • @genericxanex :

Ernie Ball 0.11s. 11s will be chimier than 10s.

  • Your tutorial is too slow and you play the song too fast.

  • @FelixMerchant:

Not sure how to respond to this. If the tutorial is too slow, you can skip parts by moving the slider foward. I don't hink I'm playing to fast. I'm playing on tempo. I broke it down very carefully. I played it slow and at the right tempo. Note at 4:16 I specifically played it VERY SLOW. If too fast for you, you can watch certain parts more than once. I respectfully disagree with your comments.

  • excellent tutorials . I ve just bought my first delay pedal and Bad is one of my favourite songs so I just had to learn it. I watched the delay pedal tutorials first as recomended which were emensly helpfull and now i understand how to set the pedal up am working learning Bad. when Ive got it licked i'll post it on the site ;-0

Thanks very much for this .

P.S I am looking forward to seeing U2 play this live at Glastonbury in a few weeks.

  • I love you

  • This is exactly what I've been looking for, helps to learn the song perfectly before even thinking about putting delay in. When you muffle the strings do you muffle all or just the open strings? I'm using a dd400 delay pretty basic. Will using a chorus pedal be a decent substitute for modulation?

  • I'm muffling the A an D string, but not the others. I think Edge used to muffle the last part of the riff before it repeats in some of the old live versions. Chorus will work ok, but not an ideal solution. May muddle it too much. You want the delayed notes to be modulated, not the original note. Try a Boss DD20. Not too pricey and a great modulated delay.

  • Yep, and the 2290 I think was the first unit with dynamic delay type on it? I'll give it a shot and hear how it sounds. Anyhow thanks for the help.

  • Hey, thanks for all the time you spend on these tutorials. My question is pertaining to New Years Day. Does Edge use a dynamic delay on the studio version? Seems like the repeats are only audible when he pauses? By the way I'm in NYC as well, 93rd street. How loud do you get that AC30 before the neighbors complain. Or do you have thick plaster walls? I can hear the guy yawn in the apartment next to me!

  • Hi. No volume issues yet since I've been using the amp model in the Axe-Fx. I'll try with an amp soon when it gets back from it's maintenance service.

Not sure what Edge used on the studio version of NYD. I think he uses a TC2290 today, as he does for most of the songs.

  • Are you using a Fractal Axe for your effects?

  • Yes. I've used it on all my tutorials except on NYD I used a TC2290 for the delay (which I don't have anymore). Going forward, most of the effects are Fractal Audio Axe-Fx Ultra and a few will be from my new Line 6 M13 unit (I like the drives on it for Vertigo and some other songs).

  • I appreciate your effort and response. At 54 years of age I have picked up guitar lessons again. U2 is a huge favorite as is the Who, Steely Dan, and so on. Considering the Axe for all around efffects. I would welcome your advice.

  • Thanks for your methodological approach and patience!

  • You're welcome. This is an old tutorial. I've upgraded camera, sound, and my playing since then!

  • @U2GuitarTutorials lmfao @ you saying my playing as well, are you saying you are still learning lol check my bad version when ya get a chance mate cheers

  • nice dog!!!

    and very good tutorial, thanks!!!

  • Thanks a lot for the fantastic tutorial. I really enjoyed learning this one. You have a real keen knack for doing guitar instruction. Keep it up!

  • Hi!

Aren't the LP and Live versions different? At least the echo settings and guitar types?

The live version sounds crispier (Strat), faster, and with more feedback than the original recording to me... Does he use reverb or compression? how does he pan his delays?

    Thanks!!!!!!!

  • Yes, I think they are different. I've heard different guitars also. This is an old tutorial. I have updated my tone since then. I will eventually do a cover of this song.

  • Liked the demo. Was very helpful. Thanks for this!

  • too much detail, soul missing

  • You are entitled to your opinion. Many appreciate the detailed analysis to help them learn the song. As for the "soul", this is meant to be a tutorial, not a cover with "soul."

  • it_s a tutorial you awful awful human. you have know idea how many skilled u2 players on utube wont share their knowledge. "u2guitartutorials" is the best thing since sliced bread.

  • Sliced bread sucks! Hand shaped unsliced quality loaves are the shizwiz.

  • I just posted a video response to you. This is how I am playing it after going through your tutorials. I do not have the right sound yet ( I think it is the guitar, it does not have a quack position), but I think it is ok. Much more better than how I used to play it.

    Thank you

  • love the dog

  • Thanx a lot - great tutorial !

  • Great Video Man !! I did this song with a Boss Gt-6 effects unit and after some days of tweaking in the EQ section,I finally nail the sound. You make good video's and certainly have the patience how to explain them. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Holland !!

  • great sound. What type of pickups are you using?

  • If I recall correctly, I had Lollars in this guitar at the time. Now I have Kinman's in it. I've actually improved this tone since then with a new Axe-Fx preset. This is one of my older tutorials. I still have to do the full song. Thank you for your feedback.

  • I can't thank you enough for your help with this seemingly simple delay song. This song is one of the greatest ever in IMHO.

The Fractal Audio Axe-Fx is amazing...check out the Magnificent tutorial. Thank You, Thank you.

Whats your opinions on Delay pedals ??Recommendations are appreciated.

  • You're welcome! Thank you! I use the Axe-Fx Ultra and sometimes a TC2290. A less expensive option is the Boss DD-20. You need a high quality, modulated delay with depth and rate settings.

    Michael

  • I think I had some reverb in there. I primarily use Fractal Audio's Axe-Fx.

    Michael

  • you are very helpful, thanks a lot. what pedals do you use? do you have reverb as well as delay?

  • great video...love the dog...

  • Thank you SO much for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to do those amazing tutorials. I am a new guitar player and nailing The Edge's tone is quite a task for me but with your videos, i made huge improvements.

  • You are welcome, thanks for the kind words!

  • You are exactly what us U2 fan beginners have been looking for...thanks.

I noticed that when i put your videos in my playlist and sort by name, because you name part one with an 'i' and not the number 1, it doesn't get sorted properly...i just rename it, but thought i would mention it :)

  • Thanks! I changed the title to a "1".

  • gracias por la ayuda, aunque no hablo ingles puedo entender a la perfeccion el video...muchas gracias

  • Has been very very helpful! Thank you very much!

  • Yes,I believe I did for the backtrack I was using.

  • im guessing you tuned your guitar down half a step?

  • Awesome! Very helpful, thanx! 5*****

  • Very cool!...Thanks for doing this.
