  • This has an almost Bluegrass feel to it.

    I like it.

  • Like many things Korean, this music is earthy, true to its own nature, and naturally beautiful. There is no sensationalism or display of technique for the sake of impressing the audience, only whole-hearted engagement in making music with very deep roots. Here, music, meditation, and art come together.

  • breathtaking

  • What year, moth and day was this recorded? Where?

  • man.... this song shows so much emotions~ I love it...

  • The master captured the unpoluted natural sound in his Kayakeum, I mean not poluted by technology. Utterly beautiful!!!

  • He shows what's the real sound of gayaguem.

  • What cd or dvd is this on? Komapsimnida.

  • Master Hwang

  • The master shows how it's done!

  • Isnt Sanjo mostly improvisation?

  • @ChilSeongGeom no... it has a score for people to follow. But it is the player's liberty to change a few parts.

  • yeah, but it has some fixed lines.

  • @ChilSeongGeom

ancient korean music score is very hard to be recorded. Therefore, the player have to throughly read thru the scores, understands and imagine what the music is trying to convey in order to properly play the music. therefore each player plays the music a bit differently. most ancient score records the playing, not the melodies and it differs from master to master, instrument to instrument. Although nowadays most players are using translated version in western musical notation.

  • Wow ... The ending especially i found very captivating.

    Thank you!

  • Absolutely beautiful ... many thanks...

  • I especially enjoy the cool 'thwack' sound when the player hits the string in a brisk forward flicking motion with his index finger. The drum is so beautiful too and the combination of the sudden sound of the drum and the 'thwack' sound on the strings - mmm!

  • love it

  • chota!

    Nice video, great playing

  • Great player. The only gayageum player I know by name. His sanjo here is pretty traditional, but I've heard him play some more progressive pieces that are captivating.

  • Great performance. I am looking for a good recording of kayagum (sanjo) like this. Who is the performer in this clip. Thanks

  • Hwang byung ki is listed on the info in the profile-- it also has the wiki link :-)

  • Favorited also! This type of older music has such intuitive appeal and matches the images beautifully. What makes the percussive sound, a drummer in the background?

  • if i'm not mistaken it's called a chango, or hourglass drum

  • @TheAltoClef janggu

  • or a buk, a barrel drum

  • No that's changgu, buk is used for vocals, but not usually for sanjo. Also the high pitch rolls are done by bouncing the thin changgu stick, not like the heavy taps you can do on the buk.

  • Thank you very much

    Favorited

  • very artistic....

    and calmful

    very mother nature.....

    very beautiful

  • very good indeed, could see close up of fingering. hope there be more like this.
