The police state we are getting is because we have let the courts tell all of us that we need to let the government deal with the bad people. So the constitution is not violated by citizens. 200 years ago a person stole from you, if you caught him you would shoot him not much was said. It started changing 50 to 80 years ago. Now if you hold the person until the cops show up you might be charged with false imprison and assault. That is because of his rights.

In my opinion, everyone has the god-given right to defend her/himself. But the law doesn't see it that way. It does depend on what state or province you're attacked in. Have you shot an attacker before? Did the police see it your way? I live in DC, and there is no self-defense law that does not mention having a gun in the home. I know from experience, and unfortunately, we do not live in a Kill Bill world. It sucks. I just dont want other women to find out that hard way. Take classes and be good at what you do. And be aware of your surroundings, and stay strong, because you are.
Guns are not the only way to defend yourself. If you look intimidated, you're more likely to get attacked. Always look around and be aware. I've taught self-defense, and it starts with the basics, like your physical presence and awareness. Being loud is definitely good. Women who fight back succeed in not getting raped more often than women who don't. Try Krav Maga classes, as well.
Self defense is much less likely to work then a gun to the face. There's little opportunity to apply martial arts when taken by surprise, much less if there's more then one opponent. A gun on the other hand presents a very realistic death threat to the rapist, even if handled by a hungover short and skinny female. Also, martial arts require constant and dedicated training while shooting a gun needs only an occasional trip to the range.

To be clearer: this guy seems to be saying that the man in this video was merely being "eccentric" so that if one can use a gun to make him run away, that therefore anyone who sings in public can be shot, because it's all "different" or "acting weird" and that's the rationale for shooting or threatening to shoot (ie, not fear of immanent attack, but fear of someone different).

Why even take that risk in the first place? I have personal experience that just displaying a fire arm is often more than enough to desuade a potential attacker. Besides, there is no law that says you can't just fire a round into a tree as a warning shot. That will get the message across REAL clear. I've nothing against martial arts & self-defense alternatives to guns, but it's not like what you see on TV. That is, normal people with guns don't shoot everyone else, and small women don't go Xena or Buffy on guys bigger than them (especially if the guy is an experienced street fighters that lifts weights, outnumber her, etc). I know a lot of people with access to guns that haven't shot anyone in years. Even the self-defense cases didn't involve shooting save in one case, and in that one time the ex who was attacking his ex-wife and her children with a knife survived (to be arrested). Lots of people under 21 in the military, too.
Martial arts won't work for everyone (like the elderly), pepper spray sometimes fails or doesn't work fast enough (especially if wind is against you).
Clarification: when I say I know people with legal access to guns who haven't shot anyone in years, I meant they've never shot anyone in the years I've known them.
Also, the people who get carry permits are given vigorous background checks so that those with poor impulse control & violent tendencies can't get them legally. Granted, Vermont doesn't even require permits to carry, but they're one of the least violent states in the USA, even less violent than Canada.
Option 1 : When the attacker is runnning at you, dont just stand there and pull out your phone to dial 911. RUN and dial!! Coz if your just standing there he'll grab even before you can press the dial button.
Option 2 : Thats IF you have a gun and only IF your parents let you have one.A pepper spary is better and what would be even better is Pepper spray and learning Martial Arts. Namely Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. When entering a dangerous area get your pepper spray ready.
Run and dial 911.. so the cops will get there a little sooner AFTER he has raped her.

The police state we are getting is because we have let the courts tell all of us that we need to let the government deal with the bad people. So the constitution is not violated by citizens. 200 years ago a person stole from you, if you caught him you would shoot him not much was said. It started changing 50 to 80 years ago. In my opinion, everyone has the god-given right to defend her/himself. But the law doesn't see it that way. It does depend on what state or province you're attacked in. Have you shot an attacker before? Did the police see it your way? I understand that it takes time to learn how to defend yourself without a weapon that is not attached to your body, and revenge is attractive, but advice like this is going to set many women up to be convicted of murder. It's safer to take classes.

I live in DC, and there is no self-defense law that does not mention having a gun in the home. I know from experience, and unfortunately, we do not live in a Kill Bill world. It sucks. Guns are not the only way to defend yourself. If you look intimidated, you're more likely to get attacked. Always look around and be aware. I've taught self-defense, and it starts with the basics, like your physical presence and awareness. Being loud is definitely good. Women who fight back succeed in not getting raped more often than women who don't. Try Krav Maga classes, as well.

Self defense is much less likely to work then a gun to the face. There's little opportunity to apply martial arts when taken by surprise, much less if there's more then one opponent. A gun on the other hand presents a very realistic death threat to the rapist, even if handled by a hungover short and skinny female. Also, martial arts require constant and dedicated training while shooting a gun needs only an occasional trip to the range.

To be clearer: this guy seems to be saying that the man in this video was merely being "eccentric" so that if one can use a gun to make him run away, that therefore anyone who sings in public can be shot, because it's all "different" or "acting weird" and that's the rationale for shooting or threatening to shoot (ie, not fear of immanent attack, but fear of someone different).

If they run away or catch lead, there is no reason to lock them up. All B.S. aside, if they know that you just might be able to kill them, they will leave you alone, no matter what their intentions are. Don't wanna get shot? Tip your hat, say "Hello, Ma'am", and keep on going. If you don't act like a threat, I promise, I won't waste a bullet. They cost too much for that and now with Obama in office, may even become impossible to find, let alone buy.

Why even take that risk in the first place? I have personal experience that just displaying a fire arm is often more than enough to desuade a potential attacker. Besides, there is no law that says you can't just fire a round into a tree as a warning shot. That will get the message across REAL clear. Unfortunately, there is no way to calculate how many "almost attacks" never happened because a person was able to defend themself. Criminals want easy targets, not ones that will "make trouble".

jeomorradi; I'm glad that has worked out for Norway. However In The USA the safest states have CCWs and the states with the highest crime have the strictest gun control laws. There is a big difference between walking the streets of Chicago and Fort worth for example.
Lets say you could take all the guns away from good citizens and criminals. Gangs would pose a bigger problem to the innocent

I'm actually rather Swiss.
It's that little place south of Germany and north of Italy where you get to take your Assault Rifle and 60 rounds home with you after serving in the armed forces.
Amazingly, we have less violent crime per gun than almost any other state.
A question: Since so many Americans have guns, that must be why they are so violent. How can we Swiss then have MORE guns per head (and really really evil ones at that), FOR FREE, and not kill each other left and right?

I've nothing against martial arts & self-defense alternatives to guns, but it's not like what you see on TV. That is, normal people with guns don't shoot everyone else, and small women don't go Xena or Buffy on guys bigger than them (especially if the guy is an experienced street fighters that lifts weights, outnumber her, etc). And just because she has a gun doesn't mean she's not paying attention (those with guns tend to pay a lot more attention to those that don't prepare for an attack)

I have been trained in martial arts however I still carry a firearm and knives and pepper spray when I cannot. Anyone serious about self defense does not place restrictions on the options available to them.

I know a lot of people with access to guns that haven't shot anyone in years. Even the self-defense cases didn't involve shooting save in one case, and in that one time the ex who was attacking his ex-wife and her children with a knife survived (to be arrested). Lots of people under 21 in the military, too.
Martial arts won't work for everyone (like the elderly), pepper spray sometimes fails or doesn't work fast enough (especially if wind is against you).
IOW, what you imagine isn't real.

Clarification: when I say I know people with legal access to guns who haven't shot anyone in years, I meant they've never shot anyone in the years I've known them.
Also, the people who get carry permits are given vigorous background checks so that those with poor impulse control & violent tendencies can't get them legally. Granted, Vermont doesn't even require permits to carry, but they're one of the least violent states in the USA, even less violent than Canada.

If you ever have to use your gun you may hesitate or find it more difficult to pull the trigger than you think.
