Or maybe the subject is real, but the time is incorrect, they have spent a lot of time and effort to watch the heavens the last 10 years. However, if this is the distraction, then is the reason for the distraction larger than the subject presented as such, or is it smaller? Or has the Society of Earth been enslaved many years ago by an external source and this is a part of the matrix in which they have projected.
Then the cycle would repeat over and over again until we are finally satisfied with ourselves, never looking back onto the path that we burn as we live, but foreward into what we feel we must change and in the end achieving nothing but death and destruction because we felt the need to overcomplicate life, and try to understand it all rather than live as we were.
Humans are more like a cancer than a virus imo. We pollute, destroy to create, and believe that objects bring us hapiness when they don't, so we fill a bottomless pit of wants that doesn't exist, killing and destroying what we feel we must to achieve it. In doing so, we breed, and we've bred to the point where we cannot be wiped off by a simple disaster, and even if most of us died we'd just breed again, in the end destroying the earth and ourselves, unless we find a way to move to a new planet.
I like the part where the narrator claims "rigid thinkers will become fragile survivors". Well, they will mainly be religious sorts. They will find it hard to survive, because whilst they pray and live in fear, the rational and practical people will prepare. Then again, if such a cosmic event does happen, I think it would be similar to what happened to dinosaurs. AKA, extinction. Probably a good thing too. Rid the earth of the human virus. I am ready.
