  • why didn't they just record this live?

  • I can't tell if it's just the sync and editing is off, or if the filming is a totally different take than the audio...

  • @wighatsuperreggie I believe that they could not record video and audio simultaneously back then, so they would record one and then the other. I know this is the case with all of the old Les Paul recordings anyway.

  • Ben Webster is sublime... but... Charlie Parker is from heaven... maybe from outer space

  • they actually recorded the sound before filming the musicians

  • This is on an entirely different level than most any other handful of minutes anywhere, ever.

  • The second part, at 3:08 is Parker's amazing "Celerity". Amazing technique and soul, and a great drum solo by Buddy Rich.

The first part, I don't recall the melody, but Hawkins plays beautifully, full of emotion. Parker takes the bridge, rather impatiently, showing off great technique, but at the end of this section he lays back and offers a lovely impersonation of Hawkins' style, letting him come back in and present his gorgeous tone. This is just excellent teamwork, nothing sloppy at all.

  • Ha, I love the look on Coleman's face when Bird cuts him off.

  • Fantastic

  • Because teamliberty americans dont respect true art. Just fluff.

  • q chevere =)

  • @TheFlyingDW The most genius ones are the most famous ones :) My favorite one in sax is Coltrane. You can also check Armstrong, Ellington, Brecker, or Miles Davis. At the piano I really like Chick Corea ( it's a different jazz, more modern and "electric" but it's my favorite of all time) or Oscar Petterson. At the guitar I like joe pass, franck gambale (hardcore jazz :p) or Pat Metheny (very good music). If you need more information...enjoy :)

  • hard to believe this is improv

  • Look Hawkings at the 1:50 her eyers, says "it's awsome" jaja Lol

  • LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK AT CHARLIE'S SMILLLLLLLLLE AT 3.48 !!!! AWWWWWWSOOOOOOOME!!! R.I.P GENIUS... ENORMOUS RESPECT FLOWING FROM little poland

  • Only 15000 views, how is that possible ?

  • Parker absolutely destroys both tracks. I mean, he just rips right into them. It's hard to listen to any other type of music after hearing this.

  • Holy wow...

  • Notice that parker's changing notes but you don't see his fingers moving at all. That's 16 hours a day of practice for you. If you know the history of how it happened, then I guess i dont have to explain, otherwise ask.

  • @Yukinari123 How it happened, man? First he stuck his fingers out WAAAAAAAAY to the sides like all sax players start doin' (lol, I'm one of them. It's a bad habit I should quit). Then he discovered that he could play 160,0000000000000th notes just by keeping his fingers close to the keys. And he kept it that way.

  • @IsaacEliSeth That's the way to do it. How fast are those frames going by in that film? 30 per second? They can't show any finger movement. That is perfect posture, and every sax player must study this video to learn how to do it right.

  • Parker wrecked it

  • wow, bird was just the man. incredible footage!

  • \º/ great \º/ wow

  • WOW...SOOOOOO RARE..!

Parkers fingers are flying and you can hardly see that.....@^@

  • fantastici!!

  • If you didn't know, Coleman Hawkins was Charlie Parker's idol. Look at 0:35 when he gives that look saying "look guys I'm playing with my idol"

  • who is the greatest saxaphone player of all time

  • RIP Hank Jones

  • this is to much

  • These people are my heroes.

  • Freakin insane. Charlie sitting by smoking a butt and he just takes off, explodes into every emotion you can possibly imagine.

  • @Edhallick Looks more like Parker smoked Hawkins!

  • @misterangelmarino You can't diss a great player like Hawkins. Both sax players played awesome on this gig. What a great film!

  • Ballade & Celebrity are the tunes here. Ballade is based on "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good", a song by Duke Ellington. The Hawk and The Bird. There's one survivor who's still playing great today: Hank Jones on piano. Thanks a lot for posting this beautiful gem!

  • wow

  • ha wow.

  • this is Unbelieavable
