Man doesn't learn from history. Climate changes combined with man's overhunting is what made the mammoth extinct. Large animals just don't populate quickly enough to compensate. The whales are facing the same situation, but with an added bane. Our world's oceans are being polluted. Mercury is becoming a big issue. So all this added up almost guarantees extinction of the whales!
only small tribal places can hunt a whale. as for modern industrial nations, there is no need to kill these sea beasties! the UN must ban all factory whaling. and nylon drift nets too!! ferocious fines, permanent ship and sea faring license confiscation, and jail time will straighten out the mess!
I'm from Norway. This makes me feel ashamed on behalf of my fellow countrymen. It's time for us to grow up in this debate and value theese awesome animals for their history, beauty and intelligense, not as a potential food source.
No, it makes perfect sense when you reflect on it. We are so interested in life "out there" yet we have precious little appreciation (or respect) for the other millions of species here on earth.
Can they communicate with Dolphins? Or are their sounds on different frequencies? We actually can't hear what they are 'saying', the frequency is too low for us to hear the sounds.
Carl Sagan is(was) like a prophet of science! He should have been president of the USA :-) a very good man! I wonder if he was ever wrong about anything and what his view on today's politics would've been... (of course he was wrong some time)
whales are just amazing creatures. they live in peace with one another. we could learn a lot from the way whales live but instead we viciously hunted them. it is disgraceful the evil mankind can inflict on such a beautiful creature.
And now there is the military sonar tests that damage and kill whales and dolphins under the excuse of defense. I ask, defense against whom? Only man's inhumanity to man. No other earth creature is so evil to its own kind and also to so many other beings as man is....even when we know how interdependent all living things are.
compassion, its part of being human and makes us different from the rest of our planetary family. if we did not have it we might let our children starve in order to feed ourselves. if we did not have it i dont think we would have been successful as we have, as for the food chain, we actually live outiside a natural food chain.
I wonder if the whales have any "disquieting tinges of guilt or regret" when they eat entire schools of fish or krill. Or for that matter when they eat other whales.
ive wondered that myself, cosmoline, i've also wondered if they feel love the way we do... for their children for example, i guess what we can do that they cant, is see things from another point of view.
"...A sharp distinction between humans and 'animals' is essential if we are to bend them to our will, make them work for us, wear them, eat them -- without any disquieting tinges of guilt or regret. It is unseemly of us, who often behave so unfeelingly toward other animals, to contend that only humans can suffer. The behavior of other animals renders such pretensions specious. They are just too much like us."
-- Drs. Carl Sagan & Ann Druyan Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, 1992
From Carl Sagan & Dr. Ann Druyan in Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors:
"Humans -- who enslave, castrate, experiment on, and fillet other animals -- have had an understandable penchant for pretending animals do not feel pain. A sharp distinction between humans and 'animals' is essential if we are to bend them to our will, make them work for us, wear them, eat them -- without any disquieting tinges of guilt or regret...
It was funny to watch...but he was smiling inside too, you could see that. It just proves what a great teacher and communicator he was...how humble and down-to-earth :) achievist summed it up in his/her comment. I had a great science teacher at school, who made science lessons so much fun by mixing humour with seriousness. Others paled in comparison :)
This particular clip shows, more than any other posted here, how humble and down to earth this great man was. Many people with one tenth of the knowledge he possessed tend to become so full of themselves once they acquire celebrity, they'd probably never attempt to "sing whale" for millions to watch - it would be way below them and their "pride and prestige" to do so. Yet Carl does it with ease, which comes from his unending passion for the work he is doing. A true lesson in modesty.
It is murder. Carl is also briliant for raising the question of why are we so interested in life "out in space", when we have little such regard for the animals that live here on Earth?

Carl Sagan's voice is quite soothing to my ears. Hearing his voice again really brings back memories of this Series, The Cosmos.

Maybe not, but chimps are well on their way. It's both amazing and frightening looking at the habits of our closest genetic relatives.
BoozyBeggar 4 years ago
Bonobos are worth checking out too. In many ways they're preferable to chimps IMHO. Sex to end wars seems like a better alternative to me.
SaganAppreciationSoc 3 years ago
Definitely. Plus they play video games, no shit. Do a search for 'chimp pacman' or something and you'll see a Bonobo playing Ms. Pacman.

Some of them may. Some may not even realize the Krill are "alive". Then again they may be very aware of that.
Unlike us, they don't have many options. It's not like they can just go vegetarian or vegan.
