My favorite song from the show! In my opinion, Stephen Grey nails the sentiment, reminiscing about a couple of past events in Jon's life, with best his friend, Michael; events that relate to this moment of deciding into which direction Jon's life will now lead. Although he knows Michael's destiny has taken a final turn that will take him out of his life, Jon has an epiphany. Stephen expresses the bittersweet joy of the moment. Jon decides that his own destiny leads him to stay with his music.
This song is amazing. I'm not very familiar with Larson's work- I've only heard RENT- but from what I've seen from these videos you've put up, if Tick, Tick... Boom! is anything to go by the man is definitely up there with Sondheim on the 'amazing musical composers' list. Your rendition of this does it justice- it's thoroughly realised and just, lovely, in terms of acting- and it's wonderful as a vocal performance. Thank you so much for putting this up :).
You are very talented! and I'm loving these vids, as this is one of my favorite shows. My only beef with the performance is the extreme diction. Sometimes, you don;t have to always hit that hard "T". :-)Slightly reminds me of a production I saw of footloose directed by a teacher who corrected all of the grammar. Took away the easy feel.
Great performance!! Clearly some of comments you're received reflect those who aren't as experienced in performing live music... Tempo is rarely a concrete constant, especially for solos when the accompanist follows the vocalists adaptation. Great work man, keep it up!
My one beef w/ this is that the story goes that he is playing on the rehearsal piano in the park. I love your voice, and acting, but this is so effective when Jon plays the whole thing on the piano.
As a working director I can tell you, you're truly gifted. It's a solid performance and interpretation. I love how you don't over do it. You let the music do the work. thats a sign o f a secure and strong actor.
Don't listen to the people below... You have a beautiful voice, and your supposed to smile when your thinking back on "happy momments". I thought you did a wonderful job acting this out. Kudos to you!
Sounds fine, but I am afraid that the situation is missed. Coming into this song Jon has just learned that Michael is HIV+ and he is singing this a broken down piano in the park, why all the smiles? Looses the sentimentality of what should be an emotional stirring piece.
@Ho1ySmokes It's something called playing the opposites so you don't seem like a whiny pansy. Maybe you'd go farther and have more friends if you were a bit more positive :)
@Ho1ySmokes it could also be written as a stage note. or it could also have been the actor asking the director saying something like "is it all right if i smile here because it just seems too depressing" or something like that
i would love to do this song for competition but i just dont have the voice at all... this is high 1st tenor and im 2nd so just too high... but he did it AMAZINGLY! a bit fast though...
great job on this song! See it is possible for me to leave good comments. I especially loved the liberties he took on the last im gonna spend. Faster than on the cd but he really made it his own. Only thing was that the lyrics that were said instead of sung at the end were just a tid bit cheezy. But other than that great job.
a little faster than i'm comfortable with, and i wish he would've sung more. it's a beautiful and difficult song, so all things considered this version wasn't bad--a little pitchy in spots, but not bad.
I performed this in January 07' at the Florida District III Thespian Festival. I got an Excellent rating for the performance. It definitely is a difficult peice to perform. I'd like to say that I really absolutely love the way it was done, minus the spoken part at the end, but particularly how you managed to squeeze it in under five minutes and lost nothing.

The fact that he resembles Jonathan Larson so much would make this very moving even if his acting and singing WEREN'T amazing.
Which they are. It's a very lovely interpretation, thank you for sharing this.
