I am actually a life long Democrat. What sets me apart from the other Democrats and the Republicans you apparently despise?
Democrats hate me because I am a fiscal conservative. Meaning, I dont really give a damn what you want to do, as long as there is enough money to pay for it AND all the other things that have to be done.
Conservatives tend to hate me, because I dont give a damn what happens in your bedroom.
If you are not an OB, the (most) hospitals wont let you deliver, because of malpractice.
If you can find a hospital that will (out of desperation), then you have to pay malpractice, which is HIGH for OB. So, the malpractice insurance you would have to purchase would make it impossible to make a profit unless you deliver a LOT of babies.
So, most Family Practice physicians that are TRAINED to deliver babies, dont.
Here is the bare bones, told to me by my family physician before I started college.
He said, "If the government would leave me alone, I could fire 2/3rds of my staff, charge 2/3rds of my current fees and STILL take home more than I do now."
Next time you are in the doctor's office, look how many people work there that are NOT providing healthcare. Every one of those has to be paid out of your visit fees.
Bare bones office would need 1 doctor, 1 assistant. 1/2 phone person.
@Leonid3s Correct me if I'm misunderstanding you, but aren't you describing a basic, socialized single-payer system, with the option of additional insurance for those who want to pay for it? Cause any time anyone mentions a system like this, the right goes batshit. On tort reform, I get your point, but realistically, suppose a doctor botches a delivery because he had one too many cocktails, leading to deformity or brain injury? Are we just going to give the mother lost wages?
1) Yes. That is exactly what I am describing. A bare bones, no frills, single-payer system.
2) There are more ways to deal with a doctor committing malpractice than throwing money at the patient (from which the lawyer will rake off a huge percentage). Here is an idea, if there is medical malpractice, add revocation of his medical license. Or, if the physician were criminally negligent, send him to prison.
There are other options. The lawyers just dont like them as much.
You can continue that idea by removing the burden of healthcare that has been added "in the patient's best interest".
HIPAA is a great example, implemented during Clinton, it adds costs and provides almost nothing.
Ever wonder why most doctors no longer do basic blood tests in their office while you wait?
Government regulations make it almost impossible. So now we have remote labs that give us results in days, instead of minutes. That is "government improvement" of healthcare.

I would also like to point out that you say the right doesn't have black candidates and I would like to point to two separate black candidates that I would have voted for: Alan Keyes and Hermann Cain. I purposely stayed off the basic ideological differences of the parties, cause I don't think what is SUPPOSED to be the core reasoning of the GOP (individualism, small gov't) is dumb in and of itself. The GOP now is where the Carter era Dems were-so deep into ideology that they aren't fit to govern. When you have Jeb Bush saying, "I thought I was a conservative until I watched the debates", clearly something has gone very wrong.

The health care law actually brings down the deficit, but if you want to talk about the dirty little secret that neither party will address, its that Obamacare is just a band-aid. We can socialize the medical industry, or we can get rid of Medicaid and Medicare and have a country where only the rich get health care. One of these days thats a choice we're gonna have to make.

I would have no problem accepting barter for my services, but I am not allowed to. The IRS wants a cut of the 'value' of the barter item, in cash. Insurance has to be paid, in cash. Tort reform isn't going to make a significant dent in the upward trajectory of health care costs; those costs are driven primarily by high drug costs,which in turn are driven by the high cost of doing R & D by capitalist means. And you should take a look at the calculus car companies apply to safety before looking at deregulation.
I tried to warn people about ObamaCare when there was still time to do something about it. They ignored me. Now I remind them, repeatedly, that I will not be suffering under the regulations they passed for "everyone". But they will.

As I said earlier, I don't think the principle of small gov't and low taxes is stupid (I think people are often hypocritical on the subject; i.e., "get your government hands off my medicaid"), but its a legitimate point of view. What is the purpose of the ObamaCare overhaul? To reduce costs and provide care to everyone. Right? It does neither. That alone is enough to want it scrapped.
Currently, there is not a single entity that can tell me how much ObamaCare is going to increase employer costs. That is a drag on the economy as most businesses tend to avoid unknown costs as much as possible. Obama handed out waivers to his supporters.
The current system would be a side by side system, similar to England's.
Patients that did not want generics or wanted more expensive tests could hop to the private healthcare to get what the public healthcare would not provide. Businesses could still offer private healthcare as a 'perk', but would not be required to.
My idea could be implemented almost overnight.
It would cover EVERYONE.
It would bring costs down by ~80%.
So, yeah, it could be done right. ObamaCare didnt

Given that you yourself say that socialized medicine is better for the majority, why not socialize it, while correcting the problems that the Canadian and European systems have? Last I heard we Americans are an inventive people. Either way, the choice will need to be made eventually.
@Leonid3s On the "war for oil", just cause the neo-cons were too hopped up on visions of an Arab world full of T-shirts and KFC's to realize they weren't going to be able to reshape it, doesn't mean that wasn't their intention. From a Machiavellian standpoint, securing a vital resource with a regional war isn't an outrageous notion in and of itself. Problem was, it didn't work and anyone with half a brain could have told them it wasn't going to work (many tried and were ignored).
It was never the intention to take the oil by force, which is the implication of the "war for oil" chant.
If you want to say they were attempting to stabilize an area rich in oil in accordance with your national interests, that is a stronger argument. Hell, it is valid foreign policy.
However, if we would exploit our own natural resources, we wouldnt have such a vested interest in their stability, which imo, is a much sounder overall policy.
@Leonid3s That's your interpretation of the phrase "war for oil". I don't think too many people honestly thought that in the post-colonial era, with its 24 hour news cycle, even the Bush people would be stupid enough to hoist a flag over the oil fields and bring in Exxon to run them.
"Drill, baby, drill" is a nice rousing chant, but it isn't a realistic energy policy. Nonetheless, under Obama the US is producing enough oil to export for the first time since 1949.
Enough oil to export? Meaning we have no need to import? Or that people are exporting because they can get a higher price overseas? The second has been going on a long time, not just under Obama.
So, if we have so much oil that we can export it, why is there an oil shortage leading to elevated gasoline prices? Why is the White House discussing the option of tapping into the Strategic Oil Reserve?

He thought that if you cut taxes, the resulting deficits would be wiped out by increased tax revenue. Didn't work out so well in practice, leading Reagan to reverse himself with the largest tax increase in US history. The only President who's actually decreased the deficit during his tenure since then was Clinton.

Example of Malpratice effects:
If you are not an OB, the (most) hospitals wont let you deliver, because of malpractice.
If you can find a hospital that will (out of desperation), then you have to pay malpractice, which is HIGH for OB. So, the malpractice insurance you would have to purchase would make it impossible to make a profit unless you deliver a LOT of babies.
So, most Family Practice physicians that are TRAINED to deliver babies, dont.
All because of malpratice insurance rates.

Because the awards are so high.

Apply those standards to ANY business and you will see two very predictable effects.
1) People capable of providing the service will leave the market. Not worth the risks.

Here is the bare bones, told to me by my family physician before I started college.
He said, "If the government would leave me alone, I could fire 2/3rds of my staff, charge 2/3rds of my current fees and STILL take home more than I do now."
Next time you are in the doctor's office, look how many people work there that are NOT providing healthcare. Every one of those has to be paid out of your visit fees.
Bare bones office would need 1 doctor, 1 assistant. 1/2 phone person.

2) There are more ways to deal with a doctor committing malpractice than throwing money at the patient (from which the lawyer will rake off a huge percentage). Here is an idea, if there is medical malpractice, add revocation of his medical license. Or, if the physician were criminally negligent, send him to prison.
There are other options. The lawyers just dont like them as much.

Tort reform isn't going to make a significant dent in the upward trajectory of health care costs; those costs are driven primarily by high drug costs,which in turn are driven by the high cost of doing R & D by capitalist means. And you should take a look at the calculus car companies apply to safety before looking at deregulation.

The system could easily be 'fixed' to include everyone at reduced costs. Here is my suggestion. (Yes, I sent this idea to my Senator and was ignored)
1) Set up a second layer of Healthcare. This layer will be primary and for everyone.
2) This layer will use nothing that is not generic or cheap. No Advair. No PETscans.
3) Malpractice awards for patients will be limited to cost and lost work. No "pain and suffering" or punitive awards.

Patients that did not want generics or wanted more expensive tests could hop to the private healthcare to get what the public healthcare would not provide. Businesses could still offer private healthcare as a 'perk', but would not be required to.
