  • best bass intro in the world!!!!!

  • Wow. Does it get any better? Wish I had a convertible to go drag Main. Thanks for this

  • I think John Fred was expecting a flood wearing those highwaters.

  • A dubious intro of disturbing grunts and groans endorsed an enamel hair-do and guppy vocalist.

  • @jejuboy1 I must have been square then :)

Although I'm sure I wore some other pretty ugly stuff :)

  • #578

  • Dear Musicians...................MORE STUFF LIKE THIS. Thanks for posting.

  • Had a pair of pants just like that!!!

  • yes me too i have a picture somewhere of myself in those striped pants

  • The bloke on tambourine does not spook easily.

  • 1968, a bad year of my life but a good year in other ways.

  • This video is so funny to watch. Fred is too tall and can barely fit in the screen....they used a wide angle lens to get all of him. Seem like he doesn't know how to dress...short pants...lol!

  • @cruisebumify - or the camera guy knowing how to shoot a tight face shot of a guy bouncing around onstage!

  • well i guess you know what 99's favorite song it was THAT yeAR,99

  • the playboys look like the mexicans on cheech n chongs up in smoke

  • @ubsme2 - and convincing as Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters ...

I was 19 when the song came out. Haven't heard it in decades, and it's still a fun song. Not ipod-worthy, but good to hear again.

  • @ubsme2 Or Born in East LA! lol

  • 2:12 Is this a great song?

  • I'd fuck him!

  • CLASSIC - damm I was just a lil kid hearing this on Am radio.....awsome!

  • @husky...nah. Maravich didn't have enough rhythm for John Fred.

  • What planet are they from?

  • a fun song without an agenda

  • Rest in peace John Fred..Your music ,voice very unique...

  • @jejuboy1

Duh! It was alright for a gutter mouth imbecile like you!

    Har!

  • love you tube helps me re live my past

  • Striped Bellbottoms, YES!!! It's clips like these that make YouTube GREAT!!!!

  • John Fred played with Pete Maravich?

  • The pride of Baton Rouge! Love them.

  • This reminds me of my friends mom Judy who wears glasses. Vacationing in Florida being forced to listen to "oldies music" because of Judy. Love it!

  • I agree. I have almost the entire life thought that the song was called "Judy in the sky". It´s a kind of blue-eyed soul/bubble gum pop - and I like it. In contrast to this famous band it´s interesting to listen to unknown bands from the 60s. A tip:

THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah"

    (What a bloody driving beat)

    THE GANTS in "Greener Days".

(High class Mersey Sound from the Deep South - USA).

    THE GOLLIWOGS in "Tell me".

(Check up the singer - it´s him!!)

  • Just found a 45RPM for this. Love this oldie but Goodie! Must send to my friend Judy!

  • Now that I know that John Fred is the guy who did "Shirley," I have a whole new respect for this song.

  • Haircut

  • i always mange to mix 'lucy in the sky' in this and 'judy in disguise' in lucy in the sky

    i blame my cousin... :P

  • High Waters for sure lol

  • spent most of my life thinking it was "judy in the sky" : / still sounds like it to me...

  • Gawd, I can remember when if you DIDN'T wear those striped pants you were square, lol.

  • @dahur Hey kid, I can remember when it was GOOD to be 'square.'

  • @tadchem371 LOL, I'm 58, and I don't ever remember it being good to be square....!

  • this was probably the first orgasmic opening to a recording. now, they on evry udder recordin, yome sane?

  • Danced to this song when I was on WNEW's Wonderama in February '68. Classic!

  • Great song, Happy Halloween.

  • I remember this song. Used to dance to it at slumber parties without a clue what any of it meant.

And who knew that John Fred himself had "cantaoupe eyes"??? Not me and my then-tweener friends, that's who. Ah yes, those were the days...

  • AAAHHH 1967 like yesterday

  • Song was #1 for 2 weeks in 1968.

  • When did John Fred die?

  • @killjoytjp April, 2005.

  • C'mon, tambourine man, get it together.

  • Where is the drummer?!? Aside from the fact, that all of the guitarists aren't plugged in.

  • Those trumpets sound like violins..

  • Psych - a - delic!!!

  • Not enough yellow.

  • Interestingly he appears to be retuning his guitar about 2:30.

  • A great song from a one-hit wonder! When this rockin' ditty hit #1 in January 1968, yours truly was just 2 years old! I didn't know this was a parody of the Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"! Seriously, Chuck Woolery appears in this video (the one playing guitar on the far right)? I remember he wrote a song for the Avant Garde titled "Naturally Stoned" the year "Judy In Disguise..." came out.

R.I.P., John Fred Gourrier. Thanks for your 15 minutes of fame you gave to the world.

  • @ChihuahuaboyDH Thanks for your comments ..I love John Fred ..and those trumpets!

  • Comment removed

  • @SeattleLA I was referring to a post someone made on this video in regard that this person thought the guy in the video playing guitar looked like Chuck Woolery. As for Chuck writing "Naturally Stoned" for the Avant Garde (as well as singing lead on that very single), you can look it up on the web (Wikipedia, for example). Just type "Chuck Woolery". Honestly, I had a hard time believing Chuck Woolery appeared in said John Fred video (notice the question mark?).

    R.I.P., John Fred.

  • @ChihuahuaboyDH Hi. I looked up a few websites, before commenting. I did see your question mark, but was not sure. It seems he was into music, though. I just like to do a lot of research and improve my history. Thank you.

  • @SeattleLA You're welcome!

  • Bell video! bella musica!

  • very happy part of childhood in the 60's great little song!!!!

  • This songs a cracker.but the blokes are an ugly bunch of pricks.lol.

  • Oh yea! Rock it baby! lol

  • I love this song! Yes my name is Judy and yes I do wear glasses.

  • Xclen't spoof on the Beatles "Lucy in The Skies With Diamonds"!

  • @rocknrolldaddio OH, It was NOT!

  • anyone use yahoo answers? this song reminds me of the great years on the site.

  • sweet

  • is the guy with the tambourine a member of the band or is he a drunk guy that sneaked onto this set?

yea common fashion for bands and was an extension of the mod style and soon to mix with the emerging hippie styles which some how turned into clothing seen on ABBA.

  • one of my father's fav, i member hearing this as kid on a 45rpm, that is just crazy

  • Why does it sound like he's having an orgasm in this song? I can't believe that was allowed on radio back then.

  • This is superb! I used to have the 45. I used to think that they were singing "Judy in the skies." lol

Great sound and video ... thank you for sharing this one.

  • ça me donne envie de danser <3

  • Believe it or not, those striped pants he's wearing was the style of the day.

  • @LODGE4444 lol Yeah, flood cuts were all the rage back then.

  • Dig those love beads!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very nostalgic - was a very big hit on the top 40 AM stations at the time - a great time to be a kid & have had this as one's music

  • Hate to say it, but I still own the 45.

  • @origdirtyoldman Good on you!!

  • ...love this old tune ...

  • This hit was always on the radio (am, then ) in 1968-when I was a kid. Still a cool sound. Amazing how time flies.

  • Tight horn arrangements and the bass line was tight too. This song I always

enjoyed it since I was a child. John Fred in memory of, May 8, 1941- April 14, 2005. R.I.P.

  • Tight horn arrangements and the bass line was tight too. This song I always

enjoyed it since I was a child.

  • I married Judy back in the 60's, when we were somebodys...Now we are nobodys!!...Just waiting to die!

  • crazy nusic

  • This tune started out as a parody of The Beatles 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds', but then took on a life of its own and became a hit.

  • Ha! I just found this!

I listened to this song when I was a kid on an AM radio and I thought he was singing "Judy in the skies"!

    Love it!

  • I CANNOT get ENOUGH of this SONG - I especially like how you have the semi-whispering lyrics and then the trumpets play in sync that sensational sounding loop that gets louder and louder, pause - "Judy in Disguise"

  • Comment removed

  • Clearly one of those records designed for the cheap car-radios of the day; has a very catchy beat and the horns pull you right in ... thanx for the memories, hadn't heard this in many years

  • MUITO BONITA, ESTA CANÇÃO

  • What a great song I love it to bad the video was messed up

  • The guy playing guitar on the far right is............... Chuck Whoolery! seriously it is.

  • <3 this song . A truely ageless tune.

  • That song would be impossible to play and sing when it was performed. The lead singers voice is doubled tracked throughout most of the song (in the old days a singer would sing it once and then sing it again while his voice from the 1st recording was playing..thus double tracking!). Other studio tricks with the horns and other instruments are also being fooled with. Now a days he could sing it no problem! Thank god for technology!

  • I like the Playboy on the tambourine.

  • The obvious rip on the Beatles added to it, an in-joke for everybody, made it an instant hit. Cryptic title and lyrics added to it, like Louie Louie

  • @Timophonic1

What's the Beatle's rip? Sorry to ask you a month later! (Judy In Disguise)

  • @g17y5wb2 It was a mild tongue-in-cheek (lyric-wise) on Lucy in the Sky ...

  • Comic Book Guy from Simpsons-"Worst...Choreography...Ever!!!"

  • cantalope eyes!? this is awful

  • bass

  • ahead of its time

  • Great stuff and the clothes were great, too. I had a pair of pants just like John Fred, together with a white belt, Beatle boots, and a paisley shirt. It was called the Mod clothing style. A lot of fun back then.

  • I remember listening to this on my red Sinclair transistor radio in 1968...I had no idea what the heck he was talking about...but I was only 6 years old...but I loved it!

  • this tune rocks, is catchy, upbeat and totally tripped out. #1 from 1968.

  • i think his pants might be a little to short for him,,,

  • I thought this song came from the 1950s but its a 1960s song ? cool

  • One of my all-time favorite one-hit wonders.

  • the 1960"s is the best music ever

  • My entire life, I thought he was black

  • @sedpearbrew in the video,,,, little bit o soul,,, I thought that group was black ,,,but its not,,,and its a good song too

  • the boat that rocked! so good

  • Haha, love his yellow sweater<3

  • Unzip up the strings of my kite? He has strings? Like what kind of strings? Oh, I know, from his tampon.

  • Did he shoot his wad at the begining of this song?

  • I swear this dudes wearing a wig.

  • Lemonade pies....wow them are some hot-ass come fuck me all night- long pants , buddy. Oh yeah, gonnna get alllll kinds of tail with that get-up.

  • You people are too stuck on aesthetics. I will admit, some parts of the vid were poorly choreographed(Tambourine man, lol), but its not such a bad vid. The closeups on John were sequenced well and the other band members are good at what they do, regardless if they can dance or not(its kind of a double standard to assume that playing an instrument or singing means you can dance, too). But cmon, John doesn't have a boner, who cares how high his trousers are, etc. Stop nitpicking.

  • Heeeey, some of these guys have no faces. That's just wrong. Also, that buffoon who wandered up onstage and grabbed a tambourine, well he can't even dance never mind play an actual instrument.

  • John Fred sportin wood.

  • This song kicks ass! It's catchy and a total trip. Knocked Hello Goodbye out of #1 January 1968.

  • They played this one when i appeared on NYC's WNEW show Wonderama back in Feb '68. Classic 60s...may the music live forever!

  • This song is actually more fun than Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds with all due respect.

  • BTW, I have a much MUCH higher quality video of this. And I believe this one has been edited from the original.

  • I really, REALLY doubt this as a parody of Lucy In Sky With Diamonds. That is just a convenient fairy tale.

I read not too long ago that they had been in the studio all day cutting an album and needed one more track - they then sat down and wrote this, and came back and recorded it. That is why it sounds so perfect and well produced.

  • dose hu disliked dis are assistant pornstars for justin bieber...

  • when i heard this on oldies radio years ago i thought it was elton john. sounds like it could fit with crocodile rock to me.

  • I guess they couldn't afford a drummer - Mr. Tambourine Man there sure doesn't have much rhythm in his feet.

I guess he and John Fred are preparing for the same flood!

  • I guess they couldn't afford a drummer - Ol' Mr. Tambourine Man there sure doesn't have much rhythm in those feet.

I guess he and John Fred are preparing for the same flood

  • What's with the orgasm in the beginning?

  • the boat that rocked

  • Fantastic song.....great beat.....brings back great memories.

    Peter

  • Love his get up.. but why is he catching flies in between singing?

  • ADAZO1982....Regarding "Judy in the sky" & having to be there to appreciate it....U got that right!!!!!! MY brother kept picking on me for months after and calling me JUDY!!!!

  • I play this among others from the 60s b4 I go to work, it starts my day off ROCKIN!!!

  • my brother dave loved this song me to still got the 45 some where

  • When I 1st heard this song I thought he was saying...JUDY IN THE SKY..until my older brother set me straight!!!! Too funny!!!!

  • @livinthe60s1 I think you really had to be there to appreciate that comedy moment ...

  • does no-one have the quo version to put up? had it and lost it from years ago..........

  • Sooooooooo that this band s looks like!!! Had the 45 RPM but their pic. wasn't on the cover!!

Hey man, dig those crazy pants & their length...the kicker is my husband(boy friend then ) had the SAME pants BUT trust me they were NOT that short!!!!!! Let's not 4get that wide belt, which is back in style.

We danced to this at our sock hops!!!

  • why is this so good

  • I Really Like This Song - So Much Fun To Sing & Dance To !!! ... :)

  • To all you Jacksonville State Gamecock fans and lately Detroit Lions fans: This was the #1 song in the USA when Eric Davis came into the world (January 26, 1968).

  • Throw that drummer a bone.

  • @nvenema Or a boner. Did you hear the orgasm sounds in the beginning?

  • Did Jonathan King write this shit?

  • Ok I've listened several times and I don't hear any snare or bass drum or tom tom's all I hear is a tambourine. (So what's with the missing drum kit.) I remember going to the Horse Shoe in Saginaw MI and listening to the Knight's Men do a cover of this song as well as at a private party on the shores of Saginaw Bay.(Lake Huron) I recorded the event I should post it.

  • WOW- those stripped psychedelic pants, luminescent turtleneck sweater and especially those love beads, totally classic!

  • @farwayout I didn't wear those type of pants, but did wear polyester shirt w/out pockets and thick heel shoes which was the style ,even for men in '68.

  • When I heard this on the radio I thought it said Judy in the sky with glasses and I thought "Holy shit, what a rip off the beatles"

  • Billboard's 235th #1 hit of the rock era. I guess I'll just take your glasses. God bless!

  • Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds? :P

  • @JekPorkinsFan Yeah, it's a parody of it.

  • Don't know if you guys have heard this album but it's actually very good. Songs like Agnes English, When the lights go out and No good to cry are excellent, to name a few. Personaly I feel the album is more Psych than Bubble Gum, as it's been classified.

  • The Vid is the style of day kiddies....as for the song. One of the very best one hit wonder songs you'll hear.

  • how could they do something like this?

  • It's really good for a giggle! I love the musical production, but the video production is goddam awful.

  • what do you call the guy hanging around with musicians? THE DRUMMER.

  • Strange band - two guitars, two trumpets, a drummer and a vocalist.

  • @ssur55 one bass and one guitar! you don't hear the great bass line?

  • @ssur55 I should have said BASS guitar. Still, you don't find two trumpets in a rock band.
