Tests show a human body subjected to over 40g’s of acceleration as well as 20g’s of centrifugal (ascending) g-force can survive. I believe they have tested humans in the centrifuge at over 20g’s without breaking a bone in their body (although they would have passed out). A normal healthy person can usually sustain a maximum of 5g’s w/out a G-suit and stay awake, however a fighter pilot can routinely sustain 9g’s with a suit and controlled muscle contraction and remain conscious.
Sorry, I watched all the videos of the crash. I does not look like Jimmy made any last second and definitely not a last minute input to save anyones live. You were just lucky you were not in the path of an out of control Mustang that has stopped Galloping for ever. A piece of history destroyed.
The was no last-second turn to the left. As can be seen in easily-found photographs, the pilot was in no way in control of the aircraft during its descent.
It is terrible what happened but this crash will make the sport safer on many levels. It's been around for nearly 50 years and it should not cease because of this tragedy. There are numerous areas for improvement they can work on without sacrificing the thrill of the event. There was a mechanical failure at the worst possible moment and it will be determined exactly what happened. One thing is for sure; Jimmy Leeward was not at fault and did everything he could do to avoid hitting anyone.
I guarantee the NTSB has been scouring you tube as well as questioning anyone and everyone about video and stills of the aircraft seconds before impact. If what the A&P speculated about the seat was true, Leeward would have had a terrible time trying to control the plane, much less if any control cables may have been pinched if they were routed directly under the seat. I would still like to know with certainty that the seat would have had to be collapsed for his helmet to be out of view.
I am new to this and am having trouble posting.. You did a good job and should ignore some of the comments. The plane was heading straight for me when it came out of inverted. I don't remember the left roll just above the stands. I was 20 rows up from where it hit. It looks like Jimmy made some sort of last minute input and saved my life. Flex
@whogas69 Sorry about the posting trouble. I have been moderating the comments, I just want things to be civil and on-topic. I've approved both of your posts, I think you can remove one if you'd like. I'm very sorry you had to experience that. I can't imagine what that would have been like.
I'm glad to hear you're alright. From everything I hear though, the late Jimmy Leeward could not have made any control changes one way or the other. Forthese highly modified P-51's flying this fast, the trim tabs on the elevators must be all the way down to counteract the P-51 wanting to lurch upward. That trim tab tore away, as slow motion video clearly shows. When that happened, the P-51 shot upward instantly, forcing Jimmy into a 10 G climb, which would knock any human unconcious.
One thing your video has provided is a clearer picture of the grandstands in respect to where the plane actually came down? Until viewing your video here, I was under the impression the plane had struck the tarmac seating area near the end and clearly that was not the case? You should seriously consider sending a copy of your video here to the NTSB, as I believe it would prove very valuable in their investigation. Thanks again for sharing this video.
From the very first footage released on this crash, I had commented about there being no pilot in the cockpit? If he had ejected from this type of aircraft, the entire canopy would have been gone in the images and since that was not the case... why do you (anyone) suppose the pilot cannot be seen in the plane? Even though your video is shot from a considerable distance, it IS definitely one of the clearest videos yet I've seen on this crash and I thank you for sharing it with us.
At 10+ instantaneous G's, he was crushed into his seat. Vertebrae, ribs, neck crushed. If he only weighed 100LBS from the waste up, he really weighed 1000 lbs at the time.
Lookup the 1998 Voodoo Chile incident with Bob Hannah. Same exact thing happened, except he was coming down the chute at the start of the race, came to at 9,000 feet, then regained control of the plane and landed it. He quit racing after that.
@britoca Agreed, I read a little more. If the shaking is too bad iMovie bails. It looks like youtube's is a little more aggressive. I applied it to the video, and I think it helped.
@hpux735 i saw 10 so far, my girlfriends friend being one of the 1st three confirmed dead from washington state, she hasn't been doing to well as of late
Does anybody know why the tailwheel and door were open before impact? If the seat frame broke is it possible that the hydraulic lines to it were broken? Did G force just cause the wheel and door to open? This was a huge tragedy and it weighs heavily on me even though I did not attend this year. Thank God that it didn't land in the stands. The fuel didn't ignite either.
Difficult to assess, but if you look at it very closely, frame by frame, it appears that at the last second, he turns the wings left, immediately before impact. If this is true, then he may have been conscious at the time? I guess we may never know.
The pilot isn't in view because the g forces from the extreme climb made prior to the crash. He was likely crushed into the cockpit, and unconscious before impact.
They are also looking to see if his seat broke. Numerous photos just before the crash show that he isn't visible in the cockpit. Even if he had just passed out or had a medical issue, his head and helmet should still be visible through the cockpit glass since he was strapped into the seat. I saw an interview today where a mechanic that works on this type of plane said they only way his head could be completely out of view is if his seat supports had broken and he had fallen backwards.
The trim tab fell of Voodoo when Bob “Hurricane” Hannah was piloting back in the late 90's. Although I am not clear on the particulars, I would surmise G-suits are not far off as Hannah did admit he was unconscious because of a supposed 10g pull-up to nearly 9,000'. And Hannah was in his 30's I believe when it happened. The kicker is even if Leeward was conscious, they can determine a general g-force load and it may have been enough to at least marginally incapacitate him.
Sorry to be a pest, but if you watch the newly released MSNBC video made by someone in the stands directly behind the crash, and this video from a different vantage point, you can see that that pilot was doing his best to not hit too much of the crowd. Othwerwise he would have went directly into the grandstands. I am convinced he was fully aware up to the last second. Both wings had 50% of the ailerons that they were supposed to. I think he went into an more or less uncontrollable dive.
who cares what caused the crash. it crashed. these things are never good. but its the nature of the business. flying is still a dangerous thing sometimes. people are just so used to it its like whatever till this happens. I find it funny that people can be so null and void to the fact that humanity can fly and its only been about 100 years.
Just found out from the Las Vegas Review Journal (newspaper) that the plane was heavily modified. It had 10 feet taken off the overall wingspan and the ailerons were shortened from 60" to 32". Jimmy Leeward is quoted as saying "I know it'll do the speed. The systems aren't proven yet. We think they're going to be OK".
Also, there is a NEW video on MSNBC from someone (who was very narrowly missed) in the grandstands directly above where the plane hit. The plane was not inverted when it hit.
It was a trim tab. It completely fell off, exactly what happened to voodoo when matt jackson was flying a few years back. I was there in the grand stand. Section d. it was coming right down at me for a few seconds. Single most horrifying event i've ever experienced in my life. I can't get the images and sounds of that out of my head. Those poor people in the boxes. My heart and thoughts go out to them and their families.
@drummingknight2010 I love how everyone is an NTSB investigator nowadays. Look at 2:08 of the video in this article, the plane is already inverted and the trim tab is clearly still intact:
@drummingknight2010 It is scary, i went last year, and the crash happened when i was driving to a campsite near reno. I was planning on going the next day.
@drummingknight2010 was there as well, something to never be forgotten, the sounds still haunt me at night. Support the Races though. Keep them going. Blue Skies Jimmy RIP
@drummingknight2010 my uncle told me that exact story about voodoo. Said the g force of loosing the trim tab at that speed slammed him into his lap monetarily knocking him out. I just hate how people blame the age. If he wasnt healthy as a horse he couldnt have passed the physical PERIOD. RIP and godspeed
@sk8drumdie0116 wattage has absolutely nothing to do with receiving. I'm not saying that I heard everything, but I'm not the only one that says no "mayday" was received.
@nevervne So your saying he called a "mayday" while he was unconscious? Sure...whatever you say. I was there. Were you? I saw it happen. Did you? Lets just say he did all he could with what he had left.
@Briankey1960 It's not like he knew it was going to crash, he wasn't trying to follow it. Plus when a camcorder is zoomed way in like that, you see tiny movements more easily. So next time, educate yourself before posting grammatically incorrect hate comments on a video of a plane crash. Thanks.
I spend my 4 days just below where this video was shot. i had my video camera in my hand, recording, but put it down as I watched the crash happen. All we could do after this, was sit around camp and listen to the radio. From what I could tell in all the video's so far, Leeward did all he could with whatever control he still had, and looking straight down at the stands, he pulled that P-51 up for all it was worth at the last moment. He was a great pilot.
@mtlassen1992 for the last time, he was unconscious.. Yes he was a great pilot, but PLEASE do a little research before saying he even had control. HIGH DEF pictures are taken and you can clearly see his head between his knees, and the elevators are NEUTRAL prior to hitting the ground. The aircraft was moving so fast, and the wings were creating so much lift, is the reason why he missed the grandstands.
@Briankey1960 'Cause he totally knew that was going to happen..../sarcasm. It was a sudden, terrifying tragedy, I am surprised he got such good footage. I would understand your comment if it was a different situation (I agree with you, a lot of people can't film for crap) but in this case, I imagine most people would be so shocked they would forget they were even filming.
@BabyBuns212 On the scanner, I heard that the number of deaths on the tarmac was 7. Later, news agencies were reporting 2 dead, but this was just in the hospitals. Just a few hours ago, the NTSB has released that the current count is 9, including the 7 the the airport and 2 in the hospitals. So, the number isn't really changing, but the what it represents has meant different things.
Also, the cause really looks like it was a trim tab failure. Something similar happened to voodoo in the past
@BabyBuns212 Look at the comment by @drummingknight2010. Basically, the trim tab fell off. The difference is that, in the case of Voodoo, the plane didn't stall at a low altitude. There was enough time for the pilot to regain consciousness. Apparently, when Voodoo landed, the wing had been so stressed from the G loading that the top skin was cupped and many rivets popped out.
@Briankey1960 I wasn't trying to record this plane specifically, I was filming the entire race. I was waiting for the next set of planes to pass me, and I wasn't intending to use this footage. I only trained the camera over there when I heard the reactions of the people around me. Tell me how well you do when something happens that abruptly. Thanks...
@hpux735 Good job. I was 20 rows up from the impact point in the grandstands. When the plane's nose pitched down from inverted, it was aimed right at me. I knew I didn't have anywhere to go. I watched it but never saw the lett bank that started just above the stands. Whatever happened to Jimmy, it appears that he somehow made that input just in time. Thanks for your posting and ignore some of the comments that I read. It is tough to do a quick shot when you only have seconds. Flex
My prayers will be raised on behalf of the families involved, and the incredible shock endured by all the people who witnessed this event first hand. It makes me almost sick to my stomach to watch it, but this video, because of it's relative clarity and unbroken showing of the final moments, may well turn out to be extremely valuable to the investigators. Thanks for sharing. "Like" is rather misleading in this context - I do not "like" the video, but as journalism it is first-rate.
Now i see what they mean when they say it hit the ground like a missle:.(

That's an angle I hadn't seen. Tragic loss. My condolences to all who suffered a loss.

It's so odd that so few were killed.

@chisp1210 Yah, it's mine. This was certainly not something that you want to ever see, especially in person.

@hpux735 I had the misfortune to see the Tu-144 crash at the Paris airshow in the 70s. Seriously, not something you ever want to see.
