I was two years younger than Shirley, I hated spinach and idolized Shirley. When I saw her sing this song, and she finally said,"OK spinach," I instantly decided, if she agrees to eat it, I eat it.. I told my parents the next day, that from now on, I want my spinach! My parents were dumbfounded, couldn't believe that a little girl could do what they couldn't.
"Childern should do what they are told" ...."Childern should'nt be so very bold" if only more parents would enforce this now a days!!!!! we sure have alot of childern grow up to be meanies, since the 1930's!!!
'yes sir, yes ma'am. I will tell all the kids of the nation who sent me to see you about it: Children have to do what they are told (hmm, hmm), children shouldn't be so very bold (hmm, hmm), or you will be a meannie when you're old, so, o, k, spinach'
I just love the way she rolls her eyes as they're telling her what children shouldn't do.
She was just too cute back then =) But she grew up to be a great and talented woman.
I loved the actors of this era...they held themselves to a better standard...and even if they didn't, the public didn't know about it. Life was simpler then. Shirley was a little dynamo. This is my favorite Shirley movie. Jack Haley is fabulous as was his female co star.
no no no no i am singing to ya no no no no well tell the boogie man the big big bad bad boogie boogie man oh thats just a bluff you know we don't belive in that stuff you got to eat your spinich baby children must do as they are told "yes sir,yes ma'ma"children shouldn't be so very bold "yes sir.yes ma'ma or you'll grow up to be a meanie when you old i love it
Halleluiah!!!! I finally found these. Poor Little Rich Girl is my all time favorite Shirley Temple movie, but I can not even find the DVD to watch the movie. Every time I eat spinach, I think of this song. Of course I prefer the black and white version but at this point I take anything I can get my hands on. Thanks for posting this and the others from this movie as I have been looking for them all over You Tube. (Now if only I could just get my hands on the movie.)
Yep, because more people followed Christianity in their homes back then.
Morals have just lessened year after year which is one of the main reasons why kids are now singing stuff like "she licks me like a lollipop," "i wanna take a ride on your disco stick," and "i kissed a girl and i liked it"....etc...
Alice Faye seems to me to look like a grownup version of Shirley. First time I saw this I thought it was her as a grown up and they had done some screen splitting so that it might have been adult Shirley singing to the child Shirley.
Was there some pro-Spinach propaganda at the time? First Popeye now this...
P.S. I like Spinach my self ;)

@dukesgal39 Yeah. And the song is actually, "You Gotta Eat Your Spinach, Baby". However, "When I'm With You" plays first in this clip.
