1:05 is kinda meh, depends on your age if youre a freshman, youve got some work to do, if youre a senior, stop running the 400. it was interesting watching this because im a 400 800 runner and he made the 4 sound like the 8. Ive always absolutely LOVED the 400, its a fantastic race and id take it over the 800 anyday. The 400 doesnt really hurt too much, not comparitively, before a race i dont think "oh this is gonna hurt" i think " i want to pr i want to break 50 or 49. that helps me out a lot
he explained that really well and i hate that dang 200 mark i ran track for 2 years now and i got first in districts and got 10th in region well this year im going to states and next year im going to nationals thats my game plan and i hope this video helps me
@kamrrdoyal i'm the only kid on my team last year besides one other kid that could get under a minute. everyone else that tried gave up because they got discouraged. the 400 can be considered the hardest event in track, and you shouldn't give up. especially since you're only an eighth grader. you can make huge improvements over the years of track, just keep training and pushing yourself.
@MidNighTTrainDepot95 you gotta practice running 200's without breaks at practice to get the feeling of the back stretch and get stronger. you also should run 600's at practice too. it worked for me
@karoouum im a boy thats using my moms facebook and i run faster than that and that was when i was eleven not tryin to be hurtful but if u want to go to a championship that time is not getting u to the finals
@karoouum that's great. i know kids who are "in shape" high school kids who can't get that fast. keep up the work and do track in high school. i only started to run the 400 my junior year of high school and i regret that i didn't do it sooner. you can make a lot of improvement as your body starts to develop more and when you do 400m workouts when you get older. it can be discouraging, but don't give up. don't listen to karooumm or whatever that kids name is, people can come a long way.
@lmjmcrfan94 Thank you so much i really appreciate that :)im doing better niw, and in school we've moved on in school's P.E from 400 to 800m and im doing better every time i practice more :D <3
thanks man, I PR'd at 49.18 last season and I've ran faster than that in practice already this season using that plan and its only Jan. . felt strong the last 100 too
I recomend if u have good speed, try running all out first 20-30mt. Keep that 80% pace up to 120mt. Float up to 200-220mt. Try building up some momentum until there are only 130m to go and give it all you have from there up to about 80 or 70 mts to go and relax, keep your face and shoulders relaxed, keep the same speedy pace but relaxed. Focus on SHORT paces at the end because if you try to overstride, you are already tired and you will just be decelerating. Arms and legs moving quickly n relax
@jonathan13652000 nope, your heart can't beat fast enough, and as allstark said, there will be so much lactic acid build up. i started my first 400m trying to run with a constant accerlation, and was basically walking the last 100, even though my time wasn't that bad. its good to have a cycle, ask your coach about it.
i agree a 50.82 is actually very slow esp. here in Texas i was at a 50.21 my freshman year no bs the guy in this video is talkin a lot but he has the right idea jst clear ur mind do squat dwn n jump up to compact ur legs so when u come out u can leap n explode out try to catch the guys n lanes ahead of u den stride it out big chest n arm swings. the last curve is where u gotta drive n get ready to let loose my senior year i was at a 48.34 top 10 in texas for 3-4a skool it takes balls to run dis
last year was my first time running a 400(as a freshman) i started at a 57 and by the end of the season, i ran a 53.28, and now as a Sophomore im gonna try to go down to a 51/52 if not lower, but as a freshman is running a 53 good? and thanks for the video man im gonna try this and see how it works out
@Illy3Luis I was exactly the same when i was in high school, 58 8th grade, dropped down to 53 flat, soph yr 51 flat, junior year 49.5 and senior year 49 flat, i have slow top speed, my 200 is 23 flat, whats your 200 speed that will tell alot
@Illy3Luis yes, a 53 second is awesome. in my high school in washington state, you would be in the top ten. and since you got 3 or 2 more seasons to train that much, you should make great improvements if you set your mind to it.
Great video. This has helped me with planning the 400 for my athletes. I look forward to more videos and even emailing you for help with our young runners. Great great job, bro.....
Clear Your mind before the Race, Im a State Champion and a college Track Runner. Get into your own Zone, I listen to music while I warm up and do my stretches before a race. You need to get alll the nervousness out your system. Honestly, a 50.82 isn't very fast for your senior year, I bet you could break 48.50 that year. Just focus on your training and at practice work on your breathing and your form. An you will be the record holder for your school for a long period of time. Good Luck
alright so last year in 8th grade i could run a 60 second 400m and by senior year i need to break 50.82 in order to get the record for my school. one problem is though is that before i start the race, i build up anxiety and I THINK that stress and anxiety slows me down a bit and keeps from getting into the 50s. do you have any advice on how not to stress out on something like this?
its not that hard to run. First 100 is kind of a nice stride. At the 200 hundred you settle into a nice comfortable jog/run. At the 300 you pick it up a bit but not too fast. The last 100 is pretty much a sprint
@Bigrobkerr He's talking about the 400m dash, not run... first 100 is a mad dash, and you have to push your way to the front to get a good spot, 200m in you sprint even harder, 300 is where you lose some people and you must keep going strong so insure your place, and the 400 is hell, trying to finish as hard as you started.
@100msprinter26 there is no limit to the things you can do to condition yourself in 400m , speed work , Power work, , agility , quickness ,endurance, a lot of strength that is wht it is the hardest event
3 things: You can train for the last 100-110. the mentality to finish the race at 300 gets easier when you do work outs that include (350s,450s, 500s, 600s) in repetition showing your body that 300m isn't the breaking point. Also, 400m runners are SUPPOSED to go for long runs (2-4 miles) to gain strength & get their wind up.
secondly, during your workouts PRACTICE COMING HOME KNEES HIGH, if you don't critique your form in practice you will never perform it in a race.
@nottheonlytrackstar In the 4x4 all this goes out of the window, your strategy is position & passion.
Run to set your team up as the legs (presumably) get faster 1st runner is establishing a tone, 2nd get out and stay out, 3rd hold that place or gain 1-2 spots better, 4th by this point can/should be in front or close to so they can bring it home.
Passion- who wants it more, if you are team minded your body is a sacrifice and you put it on the line for your team.
i always ran around one minute( i know not paticular fast/im 17yrs old) then i watched this now i run around 53 just 2 months later. and thats not bad at all concidering i weigh 95 kilos/ 210 pounds. and im just 6 2/ 1,88m
Hand time my first year of track and hand time I ran a 56.. I'm more of a 200m 100m guy. My 200m pr for sophmore year (last year) was 22.6 sec.. When I ran a 56 I thought that was a bad time so I didn't ever race for it or train. Should I?
I ran my first 400 meters and I didn't train that well for it. haha. I sprinted full speed and ran out of energy after about 250 meters. I totally bombed the 400 meters the first time I competed. haha
hey i was wondering im a freshman and i play football and track and im easily the fastest kid but do u think lifting would be a bad think and would decrease my times cause im going to be working my chest quads ect
i have to try this out. im a junior in high school and my pr is 58.99. i know i need to improve this by a few seconds so i hope you can help me however you can. also please comment message me for tips on better running
Thank you so much for this video! Last season I was a 14 year old Freshman (girl) and I ran 63.3 as my PR for the 400, but my strategy was to go out easy, then sprint the last 100 hundred. It worked quite well seeing as everyone was dying out at the end, but I only managed to improve from my first race in the 400 being 63.6 to one later in the season being 63.3, my PR. I'll test this out as soon as I can. Thanks again for the video!
Thanks Im 13 I Did 400m Last Year In The U15's Doin 58.1 (First And Only That Year) Now Im On My Second Year Thinking Of Taking It Seriously Thanks For This Guide Now Lets See If This Works! :)
Thank you! I take the 400m very seriously, it is my most successful event... But I'm still a long time away from 52 seconds... My best is 1:02 flat... I'm 14 years old... How can I train? What training should I apply to my daily schedule?
@MegaJaws11 Mate, You should. Your 14 and running 54 seconds. Im 15 and running 52 seconds, and im made State trials In australia. Which is a team that goes to Australian titles. So definatly take up athletics. Do you know what you run 200m in?
I wish that I would have watched this a month ago. I had regionals and was seated a full second ahead of everybody. I never really had any competition, and had a pr of 51, my strategy was to pass everyone I could by the 200 meter mark... Well at regionals, they were faster. Lol. My first 200 was a 23 flat, and I died at the end of the race, which let 2 kids that had phenomenal days (pr by 2.5 seconds) beat me. I was pretty bummed out, but I will defiantly use what I've just learned next season.
Hi Coach, my daughter runs a 66 at 12yrs old...she has the speed endurance to get her time to 59. She said she still has more gas remaining in the tank. Can you plz give me advice to make this happen? Thks Coach.
during my track season i ran a 1:08 and my goal next year is break our school record which is around 1:05 or 1:04. i really want to follow after my cousin who broke the mile record at our school. i am planning on training this summer to help me. my coach gave me a strategy. it was to give about 85-90% on the first turn then on the bak stretch hav long strides 2 turn pump my arms and the last stretch full out sprint. i do all of that but still want a better time. anymore advice for me to improv?
thats not true he said go hard at first. not true you want to be constantly accelerating constantly constantly until you reach the final 100 where u reach your top speed
Hey, my coach ALWAYS puts me in the 400m. relay, my best time this year is only a 1.06, (im a girl) but im shooting for a faster time of course (: im going to try this out for my meet on monday! thank you so much. you know what your talking about!, but if you can get back to me- what does "float" mean? we always hear it but i never really know what it means for sure.
i have a question. at the track i run at, whenever there's any wind, it's blowing against you in the last 100. any tips on what to do in that situation?
Yeah.i used this my last track meet.i ran a 50 flat.im only a freshman.Im from ohio. But i wont be going to county or state for the 400.i run the 800m in 1:58.I cant wait till im a sen. the record from are school is 1:53.i think ill be able to get that.
I'm a freshman in louisiana and I run a 51 in the 400.and I always come in top 3.but I want to come in first all the time.if you want to see my video the name is neville track star on youtube
I'm a short distance sprinter... My coach put me in the 400m for this Poland invitational (hardest meet of the year for us). Many kids are running below 50's at this meet. Me? I run a 59.
I'm so boned, but I've never seen this strategy. I always went 100 hard, stride the back, and kick out of the curve like its a 100 dash again. My coach says I have PERFECT form, but I can't win.
I'm going to try this tomorrow, please wish me luck. I'm so scared. Thanks for the advice.
I hope this video helps me, cus im a freshman on JV but the coaches ran me with varsity and for the first time i ran the 400 and didnt do so good, actually i did pretty bad 57.3, but then seeing this vid i saw i messed up on my start i didnt start out fast, so i lost a few secs i came out in a jog, and on the last 100 i wasnt pumping my arms, so seeing this i hope it helps me tomorrow on The KU relays, that the coaches have me running...
saturday i ran 56.56 in my 400m race and for the relay i follow this steps n i feel the major diffrence in time my time went to a 54. this is a great tips how to run this race.
Hi im running for a college at this moment and im running the 400 this is my second time this season running it my first 400 this season was a 58.38 which isnt close to my best. I ran that in lane 9. I would like to run the 400 in 56 but i got stuck in lane 9 again for my upcoming meet on saturday how do i run a good time in lane 9....
so, i jus got yelled at for not knowing how to run the 400m right lol. My first 4 was a 59 lmao, my 2nd was a 56. and i want to get down to 54 SOON. hopefully just running it better will help me. I used to be a miler but my coach took me down from that cuz we needed someone for our 4x4. everyone else runs 5 an below so i need to get there so i dont feel like im holding my team back
Thank you, that 4th step on sprinting 200m-220m to bring you pace speed back really hit me hard. the only strategy i had was sprinting the whole thing and i couldn't seem to past 51 and 52s. i will for sure be trying this real strategy on thursday
I'm 17 years old Senior HS, on the track team, working on my 400 meter dash. 50 seconds is this magical barrier that I can't break and I don't know why. My fastest is 51.8. I feel that I can run 48 seconds but it doesn't happen. What can I do to improve my time? do 200 repeats about 1min recovery. Coach wants consistent 24 seconds.
I Also, do 600's. I do resistance training using parachutes and wearing leg weights. I also run hills that are are 300 meters long.
Im in 9th grade and i ran a 59. If i follow these tips how fast could I be?

It worked quite well seeing as everyone was dying out at the end, but I only managed to improve from my first race in the 400 being 63.6 to one later in the season being 63.3, my PR. I'll test this out as soon as I can. Thanks again for the video!

@MegaJaws11 dude that's amazing! I run 1:02 and I'm one of my school's beat runners... And I'm also 14... :/
destructor911911 5 months ago
Thank you! I take the 400m very seriously, it is my most successful event... But I'm still a long time away from 52 seconds... My best is 1:02 flat... I'm 14 years old... How can I train? What training should I apply to my daily schedule?
destructor911911 5 months ago
very helpful video, should help me during my 400 time trial this weekend
peter1234930 5 months ago
I used your ideas, and tactics, and made a PR in the 400 the first time after, in TRAINING! Do you think you could make one of these for the 800???

i can run 400m in 54 seconds dead and i'm an english 14 year old. Is this good and should i consider taking up athletics as a major sport?
MegaJaws11 6 months ago
@MegaJaws11 Mate, You should. Your 14 and running 54 seconds. Im 15 and running 52 seconds, and im made State trials In australia. Which is a team that goes to Australian titles. So definatly take up athletics. Do you know what you run 200m in?
aussie401 6 months ago
@aussie401 i can run 200m in 24.3 seconds, 100m in 12 seconds dead, 800m in 2:03 and a crappy 4:34 for 1500m :L

The yelling at the end really does help- my coaches would do it at the last 100 of the race and that's where I took over
BlackColombiano27 7 months ago
@abourque- thats not too great a time in a 400 even for 13 years- but keep working on it and you'll be choppin
BlackColombiano27 7 months ago
@gobbychard yes and i am 13. is that good or bad....?
abourque13 7 months ago
Haha the whole part about how you can't coach the last 100 of the 400m makes me laugh cuz it's soooo true.

I was pretty bummed out, but I will defiantly use what I've just learned next season.

during my track season i ran a 1:08 and my goal next year is break our school record which is around 1:05 or 1:04. i really want to follow after my cousin who broke the mile record at our school. i am planning on training this summer to help me. my coach gave me a strategy. it was to give about 85-90% on the first turn then on the bak stretch hav long strides 2 turn pump my arms and the last stretch full out sprint. i do all of that but still want a better time. anymore advice for me to improv?
abourque13 8 months ago
