When I saw this movie I can't have been more than 10 or 11, and it was the very first time I was reduced to tears by a film. It hadn't even occurred to me before that I could cry at a film. As I've got older I've become more susceptible, and I've never again watched Shadowlands for fear of being rendered completely prostrate by it.
This movie was so depressing i cry everytime i watch it. I even took out that book C.S. Lewis wrote about the grieving process at the library all very depressing. Especially this part i literally breakdown and when joy dies too.
i love that book. i mean it is terribly sad, but the idea that he struggled with his faith and wasn't ashame to write about it. i mean after all, he was 'the' anglican writer. and i love this movie.
They should claim it. It was still an anglican when he wrote that stuff. He was near his death when he switched (I won't say converted because they're both Christian) to the Roman church.
Extraordinary acting from Hopkins and the young boy who plays Joy Gresham's son. Hopkins' abrupt transition from stoic, resigned sadness to naked grief is easily one of the finest pieces of acting committed to celluloid in recent cinematic history.
the movie must be one of the most under rated masterpieces of all time
hopkins and debra winger make an amazing pair
CS Lewis was the irish/welsh genius behind narnia and it was amazing to see the take on his character. deeply religious learned man who needed a straight talking american gal. beautiful

That scene kills me every time. I remember seeing this in the cinema and weeping like a baby. There is art in beauty.

i know, but all the stuff he wrote, like 'the screwtape letters', anglicans like to claim

This was one of the saddest scenes I've seen in a movie, but I think people would need to see the entire film for it to have the same effect

Sir Anthony Hopkins is one of the finest actors to grace the silver screen and this scene is one of the many reasons why. Brilliant.

It was unpredictable and shocking to me when Anthony breaks down bcuz I never expected it so I ended up crying too!! Hopkins is such a great actor.
