  • My maestro Bud "Bebop".........

  • 2:39

  • @glovetones That was random

  • Pedazo de artista tocando en el año de mi nacimiento

  • The Tea for Two recording are in fact an excellent basis for comparing Bud Powell and Art Tatum, since this song, performed at a ridiculous speed, was a sort of showcase for both of them.

Bud's timing is just so tight, as was Birds - and his melodic creativity is unsurpassed.

He was, right from the time he entered the scene in New York, highly respected by everyone. Same kind of status as Bird - simply a class of his own.

  • Bud Powell's mastery of the piano is unrivaled. Even though this is great, it is nothing compared to Bud from his Golden days (late 40's-early 50's). Listen to his Tea for Two interpretations, and you will understand how great his technique and precision was.

I think, the only one that really matches his genius, is Art Tatum, who incidentally is the precursor of Bud Powells playing. If you listen to the early Bud Powell records, you will see what I mean. He just took Art Tatum a bit further.

  • NHOP was 16 when this was recorded:O

  • ah the good old days, where you could smoke, drink and listen to great music... i wasn't even alive at this point, but i still miss it

  • Bud, I'm really sorry, I can't understand why people are going nuts for you, your improvisation is just simple swing, what's the genius about it??? for an example Art Tatum - is very impressive, rhythmically, harmonically and melodically... Oscar Peterson, also great, but what's the bid deal with you, your keys are so unclear and clashing one with the other, your touch on the piano is ugly, what the hell, Chick Corea and Marian McPartland are talking about you as talking about god...

  • @shlome100 I'm sorry for you that you can't appreciate this genius; I think you lack musical feeling or instruction.

I'm an old amator musician (alto) and I know what I'm talking about: Bud is a real genius as many other musicians think.

Listen more and over again and one day you will be touched by the beauty of his improvisations on this very clear AABA rhythme scheme in Bflat.

  • @shlome100 i use to think the same about Sonny Rollins I kept wondering ,why, why? Why was everyone raving about him- then POW!

  • @shlome100 Without Bud Powell there would be neither Oscar Peterson, nor Chick Corea.

  • @Sazandar you can basically say without BP there is no modern piano; and no-one since has had his depth.

  • @sukkot54 Thelonious Monk, Lennie Tristano and Herbie Nichols had Bud's depth. Most certainly!

  • @shlome100 well, peazo de idiot, if they're talking about him like he is a god it is because of SOMETHING.

Im really sorry in fact for you, you cant appreciate the artistry and touch of the MAESTRO bud powell

  • @DajaWaja Since I've posted my first post on this video there were a few people who really opened my eyes about understanding the genius of Bud, so I simply went ahead and listened to his recordings for a pretty long time, and the results are that I can hear in his playing alot and more then alot, but still I prefer Tatum and Peterson, they're just swinging and blowing the place!

  • @shlome100 Hi, music is sooo subjective- I love Bud but if he doesn't speak to you then he doesn't. Why he speaks to me- Oscar is a happy player, he smokes, he has awesome technique. Bud is just deep- there is a place in music beyond the emotions- a place -a trance state- where the riffs are golden- the drive and beauty are supreme. Bud is the only player that sends me to the piano to play after hearing him. Bud was the first- Oscar, Bill, Chick etc. came after- speaking of modern jazz

  • To which i would add that in this piece Bud's dissection of the chord changes and the tune has a distinctly modal feel, similar to what you find in Carnatic music.

See M.S. Subbulakshami, or Kiranavali Vidyashankar for two good comparisons.

  • Even as deteriorated as Bud was by this point, he still had more soul, more swing, and more musical ideas than most any other jazz pianist. God bless his soul.

  • @sukkot54 Amen to that

  • dont matter what... but our old folks could make real music. Their thouts and brains were somewhere else... this is the the shi....

  • Lui e Monk...semplicemente unici...geniali....innovatori...mi mancate molto

  • Who needs Jesus when you have Bud Powell recordings? RIP Bud, you proved every classical teacher I had wrong with your fantastic playing even though you didn't have "proper technique". Best Be-bop player in history.

  • Off the Hook--Ay, Captain?!

  • Pederson looks 17..is he?

  • @kevinherbert Pedersen was 16 at the time of this recording.

  • I heard some Monk-isms in Bud's playing here. They were great friends, but I never thought that they would play similar phrases since they conceptualized music differently. Proved me wrong, great playing, whew!

  • I love you, Bud!

  • This is kind of like seeing a Leonardo Da Vinci painting repainted by Michelangelo.

  • The bass player, Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson, went on play with Oscar Peterson among many other greats. He was just 16 years old here.

  • Brilliant, fantastic.

  • Bud Powell is playing better than Oscar Peterson, no dobt.

  • I denne tid är dedt godt att höre detta. Young magic Niels-Henning and the storm Bud Powell. Incredible!

  • WTF!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS GOOOOOOOD

  • Does he hum along with his piano tunes? I catch a bunch of distorted mumbling in the background of all his recordings.

  • @jainsworr He most definitely did. It's part of the magic!

  • @jainsworr He most definitely did. It's part of the magic!

  • @jainsworr Certainly did. It's part of the magic!

  • @jainsworr yes Bud sang along

  • Beyond genius....

  • this video is so cool!!! i agree!

  • I hope there is a heaven that has Bud Powell playing live Jazz all of the time.

  • The clip is from the DVD "Bud Powell in Europe"

you can find it at jazzmessengers

  • Probably the best Bud Powell video available--a true classic. What a trip it would be to be in Copenhagen in '62. What was the origional medium for this clip?--i.e. type of film, etc. Thanks for posting this treasure!

  • Incredible even towards the end of his career. What melodic invention, phrasing, chorus after chorus. Great time also by the band, no rushing here.

  • how come some of the most legendary material on the youtube have so few viewings?!?! (like this one)

  • This is 'The Real McCoy' here guys

  • Niels Henning on bass was 16 in this clip. As I recall, he was invited to join Count Basie, but had to turn that down. This clip is absolutely incredible :D

  • Bud Powell was the truth!

  • lovely playing from bud, and int his clip, N.H.O.P (bass) is only 15!

  • @jazzevans 15 ?!!

  • amazing bud

  • Great VDO

  • Bud Powell, a pianistic genius, always in my herat and memory!

  • brilliant!

  • Still the greatest of them all, and this is one of the best clips I've seen of him. Thanks so much for posting!
