Please don't take this comment the wrong way; because I love Harleys and v-twins like them; but I always wondered why the police forces don't utilize the lighter-weight bikes for performance? Wouldn't that give them an even greater edge since they're already skilled with these mean machines? I had a 450lb. 750cc bike which was easy to ride, and it didn't need to be 1000 or 1200cc to make it go since it was lighter. I'd think it would be preferable. Any thoughts?
@gibbletz Yea, the BMW R1150RT is 620 lbs with a full tank (that's without the added police equipment) ☺
I have a de-commission 2003, (with the CHP equipment removed). It handles really well for being a heavy bike. Although a 95 hp boxer twin engine, it puts out 74 ft lbs of torque (same as the 140 hp 4 cylinder Japanese sport bikes). Great acceleration up to 120 mph after that a 4 banger will pull away to higher speeds.
@viggoM35 Your analysis is right on, Buddy! :D Nobody should attempt to go over 140 anyways unless it's an emergency. So the people riding 4 cylinder ones have a death wish. It's not real fun. Real fun stays under 120 anyway. I am in no way ashamed to say that I use bikes properly.
Very nice, those folks have some great skills - I try to tell people that the bike cops had great skills this video shows them off - they are not just cops they are riders too. Well done!
Yeah for sure, I woulda dropped my sabre 1100 fjust starting in the first turn. The last rider Taylor incestigated an accident when I got hit from behind by a caddillac in my taurus wagon.
@koolblkguy Sorry bout the rear-end accident (probably no accident but neglagence on the part of the person who hit you; as usual, but) I saw the best invention yesterday on a chopper, which was a flashing light on the back- activated every time either brake lever is depressed. This allows the operator to have greatly increased control by not having to "tap" or "pump" their brake lever lightly to warn people behind them they are about to really brake; invaluable! All ought own this.
That Japanese video you refer to is ligther, lower disp bikes with larger radius curves. Same lean angle but not as tight. It's called a gymkana course.

It is impressive. Not every person can turn a sharp u-turn with confidence, skill and make it look easy at the same time. :)

i always thought that those big, heavy, awkward bikes would be just that. Big, heavy, and awkward. but i have been proven wrong once again!
mooseman121 4 years ago
Those Beamers are anything but awkward. I've got the R1100RT, which is just the older version of the R1150RT. I love it!

you're talking about now, right? or are you referring to the bikes they are using on the video?

You can do those things too... just takes knowing how and practice.
