  • so young, so graceful and absolutely beautiful...

  • She deserved that award more than anyone else.

  • Is there any other footage of her and Olivier at this ceromony?

  • I LOVE U VIVIEN!!!!!! <3

  • I LOVE U VIVIEN!!!!!! <3

  • I LOVE U VIVIEN!!!!!! <3

  • This speech seems like she's acting. However, there is an elegance she transmits when she speaks that is rare this days.

  • She was SOOOOOOOO beautiful! And she is such a lady. oscar well deserved. i wish she was still alive though. R.I.P Vivian Leigh <33333

  • vivian was a good speaker

  • LA MEJOR!!!!.......LA MEJOR SCARLETT : VIVIAN LEIGHT....DIOSAAAAAAA!!!!!

  • @cherrylove316 It really does make a difference! But then again, things change through times and environment. But she really did look so elegant and full of dignity and pride, I really appreaciate!

  • She talks like an Angel.

  • what a good speaker Vivian Leigh was so sad that she suffered from Mental illness and died form it

  • Wow good spaker she was RIP Vivian

  • Oscar speeches were so much better back then.

  • such a legendary actress <3

  • The way they spoke is the way they acted, it's so beautiful, love it. Love her.

  • Sublime Vivien Leigh ♥

  • I adore her! She is one of my role models. I mean, she's amazing <3

  • @cherrylove316

Compare this to Natalie Portman's speech at the Golden Globes. I like Natalie, she is such a good actress and maybe she thought a joke was OK. But, again, compare this to it.

  • this is when Hollywood was CLASSY.

  • You don't ever see speeches that classy anymore, not in acceptance speeches, and definately not in day-to-day conversations.

    Beautiful, talented, and graceful...

  • gone with the wind has been a favorite since i was five years old. even then i knew i wanted to grow up as beautiful and charming as vivien. Too bad neither of those things are found in very many places.

  • she is acting just like Scarlet! funny!

  • amazing footage!!!

  • Ladies and gentlemen, this is an actress.

  • she was just magical

  • Now that's poise, ladies and gentlemen.

  • It is always lovely to hear her speak in her English accent since I so rarely hear it.

  • Such class and grace... very few could ever match her, certainly nobody today.

  • LOVELY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I first saw Vivien Leigh in Waterloo Bridge when about ten years old.Forty years later I am still mesmerised by those eyes.I know it's superficial but for me she is the most stunning actress ever.

  • vivian leigh is just so beautiful and gone with the wind is not only 1 of my true favourite movies but its also one of my favourite books as well

  • gone with the wind the movie is fantastic the books even better

  • what a beautiful woman.and such a legend.woman like her ,elizabeth taylor, marilyn and some others will live forever

  • what a legend.we will never see another vivien, marilyn, elizabeth and other like them

  • such a legend <3 one of a kind

  • she was so beautiful .LEGEND <33333333

  • she's such a legend.one of the best actresses of all time

  • such a beautiful, graceful and elegant woman.

the only Scarlett O'Hara, in my opinion.

  • wow, women were so classy back then.

  • My God, she is beautiful. @_@ And she has so much grace.

  • vivien in the role of scarlet is actualy my dream personality... i often thinkof this movie i general and at vivian in paticular in my depressed period./.. it make me fell stronger and show gives me a motivation not to fal down.

  • She is beyond beautiful!!

  • How can anyone be THAT beautiful? She should be in museum or art gallery ,just perfection!!

  • She is beyond stunning...she should be in an art gallery!!

  • GWTW my fav movie of all time!!

  • @cherrylove316 I think most of it was dubbed anyway

  • Leigh's performance is the glue in this movie. Overall, GWTW is a bit of a hot mess and it would have been nothing without her.

  • She deserved it. No one else could have done a better job in Gone with the wind as her. I must say that it was the absolute best performance I've ever seen by a female. Deserved that Oscar more than anyone else did.

  • I love this dress! It is fashionable again!!

    Vivien Leigh forever!!!

  • lool..as much as i love her..i really think she practiced her speech a thousand times at home xD .. it was soooo.......fake?

  • vivien was on set for a movie when she was awarded her oscar for streetcar

  • How sad that another of the evening's winners, Hattie McDaniel, was not allowed to sit at the same table with the other "GWTW" nominees because of her race. Also, Hattie was not permitted to enter the ceremonies from the front of the building. Yet, George Clooney applauded Hattie's Oscar win as an example of Hollywood's liberalism?

  • A lovely and very fine actress in everything she did.

  • @cherrylove316 Because they don't have elegance, class and grace. What do you expect?

  • What composure!! I bet she bounced off the walls once she had some privacy lol.

I would HATE to be up for that category that year! Who would ever believe they'd beat her??? And in flippin gone with the wind?!!??!

  • Her class is fantastic. She's my idol as to how to act now. =)

  • This clip reminds me of Anne Baxter in All About Eve.

  • Vivian Leigh is beastly awesome in that movie!!! and its odd seeing her not mean :)

  • I read that Olivier was astounded by her performance, despite having acted with her onstage and in their one film together, "That Hamilton Woman" he had no idea what she was trukoy capable of, it really shocked him.

  • She just oozes class from every pore doesn't she?

  • She's a real lady.

  • Now, I'm sort of sorry that I skimmed through Gone with the Wind

  • Such a delicate flower she was.

  • she was very serious! :)

  • Vivien Leigh was brilliant!

  • Wow... did people really talk like this? So elegant... makes us look like trash haha!

  • i adore her

  • She is beautiful, witty, charismatic, talented, stylish and eloquent. <3

  • Vivien Leigh is absolute CLASS, we have lost so much in America, Vivien Leigh was the best !!!!! Such a lady.

  • she is so gorgeous !

  • @BahramOfTheOnager Lol that is such an unusual comment, but you made me laugh :) lol You know that apparently when he died, a bunch of her films were found in his bunker....creepy much? And he idolized Clark Gable so much, that he once asked for someone to "safely" kidnap him just so he could meet him. What a creeper...

  • This speech is so unnatural!

  • i love the shy way she speaks

  • i love the way she talks, so elegant and graceful and shy, shes so awesome! its kind of sad people dont speak that way anymore

  • Because most of them only care about themselves

  • back when people were gracious. :>

  • She looked like an angel

  • People were stunned to learn that southern belle Scarlett was portrayed by a British actress.

  • In an interview, she once said, "I am Blanche Dubois"; troubled, beautiful soul.

  • Ravishingly beautiful.

  • The British don't age very well but Vivien was always beautiful and was still gorgeous in her last years of living when she had TB which made her age fast before her years to come.

  • The British don't age very well but Vivien was always beautiful and was still gorgeous in her last years of living when she had TB which made her age fast before her years to come.

  • i truly do envy this beautiful lady for her looks.....goodness she was soooooo gorgeous, sophisticated, and classy!

  • i truly do envy this beautiful lady for her looks.....goodness she was soooooo gorgeous, sophisticated, and classy!

  • i truly do envy this beautiful lady for her looks.....goodness she was soooooo gorgeous, sophisticated, and classy!

  • i truly do envy this beautiful lady for her looks.....goodness she was soooooo gorgeous, sophisticated, and classy!

  • She's really elegant when she receives her Oscar and I know she's not, but her behavior looks like a person who is acting.

  • She was so beautiful and had such a lovely speaking voice.

  • oh comon... she's very pretty and it is a nice speech, but it feels like she's still acting!

Do you not see it? Where's the spontaneity, the person itself?

  • she is blanche dubois, the way she speaks here is just soo similar

  • Does any1 know here you can get her oscar speech for Streetcar named desire????????? I'm not even sure she turned up or not bt if sum1 can tell me, that will be great, thanks

  • Vivian played this part; I don't think there is anyone who could hold a candle to her performance as Scarlett O'hara..........

  • She stood there and gave that speech as if it were a screen test LOL she had such a talent and class RIP "they just don't make them like Vivien anymore!

  • The most beautiful actress of all time!

  • wow 40s!

  • i didn't really like gone with the wind, it was way 2 long, but she was outstanding and defo deserved her oscar

  • i know, tell me about it,if only they would speak as eloquently as she did

  • an amazing post 5* thanks

  • well done girl

  • @cherrylove316 Why is showing emotion so terrible. Viv is a legend...but she looks like an overly rehearsed robot in this video. There is nothing gracious about apathy. I think Kate Winslet did it best.

  • they acceptance speech looks SOO fake and rehearsed, so vintage actually. like the one eve harrington did in all about eve,

  • What an actress and what a role! The film's length was just short of 4 hours, and she appeared in most of the scenes, which were shot out of sequence. This is arguably the greatest Best Actress Oscar win ever (Meryl Streep in SOPHIE'S CHOICE must come a close second) for a role which is the pinnacle of screen roles, the "ne plus ultra" performance.

  • Why the hell can't an Oscar speech be this calm and graceful nowadays?

My point I'd like to share is Julia Roberts' horrendous oscar speech a few years back.

  • Oscar awards during those times is a lot simpler than what we have now.

Vivien Leigh is the one and only Scarlett O'Hara!

  • Arguably tyhe greatest Oscar-winning female performance of all time. The role of Scarlett is ne plus ultra.

  • no tears?

  • so rehearsed and staged is this speech...yawn-fest!!!

  • What a lovely voice :)

  • It looks like a scene from a film. God, everyone was so proper back then!

  • this seems robotic

  • Great speaker. We live in a degrading society now where people don't know how to spell orange without a shortcut and a J.

  • So lovely.

  • Well, that speech is certainly spontaneous and unrehearsed!

  • One thing that is missing (or at least in very, very short supply) today:

    Class

  • How exquisitely charming. Wow.

I have to say though it almost seemed as if she was playing a character up there... "V. Lee, the Public Persona"? In any case, what a delightful persona. :)

  • her voice sounds rehearsed in order to emulate a high society woman. Those days, if you can't speak like those british upper class women, your chance as an actress is low. That until katharine hepburn changed everything.

  • She has the most beautiful speaking voice. And that dress is so classy. That's something celebrities would wear today!

  • Probably because she had been informed that she was the winner the Oscar, During the 30's he the winners were unveiled two weeks prior to the ceremony, but now the tight secrecy of the ballot made the whole ceremony more interesting imo.

  • the world was in a sorry state in 1940, surprised vivian travelled across to america from the UK (if she did) given the carnage the German U-Boats were doing to shipping

  • She said that speech as if she were acting.

I couldn't tell if I was watching a movie, or it was real life.

They were so dignified and classy back then.

    What happened?

  • goosh, she's so scarlett

    love you so much, vivien!

  • The best acceptance speech ever given in the acceptance of an Academy Award for any category throughout the history of the Award Ceremony!

  • Next time an American says English people are ugly just say Vivien Leigh lol.

  • I always said her name like Vivien Lay instead of Vivien Lee

  • forever a lady, forever a great...great actress, a beauty...that kind of women I hope to find, to myself...sometime.....

  • Vivling.....Forever..I love Viv.

She is very, very Beautiful Lass !! stupendous talent, simple the best !!!

= I'm sorry my english..!!! I'm of Brazil.!!

  • WOW, too brazilians that love Vivian!

    Eu também amo a Vivian.

I wanna be like her! ;D

  • Don't worry your English is just fine and I do share what you said about Vivien Leigh-she was a megastar alright, beyond belief!!!! such finesse...

  • Wow...What a lovely, classy and elegant lady! Love her so much. :)

  • The speech oration is in itself worthy of another Oscar!!! She so humbly accepted the award--and somehow managed to redirect her claim to fame to DOS. She's a darling--love her so.

Quite different from how awards are accepted in these days celebrations. Good Post!!!

  • she sounds like someone whos making a mockery or about to crack a punchline

  • She was incredible in Gone With The Wind, but even better in A Streetcar Named Desire

  • Leigh's ensemble is my favorite Oscar dress, ever. It's so classy, elegant, modern and simplistic--she glows no matter what she wears. Plus, it's really rare to see floral prints at the Oscars today, not to mention a big fur coat.

  • It might be because the Oscar winners weren't so secretive as they are today--some stars more or less knew who would win, and you always hear stories about anonymous tips telling winners to come to the awards and collect, as was the case with James Stewart and Claudette Colbert. None of the hype or secrecy like today.

Also, I think if every winner was like that we'd probably think they were stuck-up and pompous.

  • Simply the best, and better than all the rest, is Vivien Leigh IMO!!!!

  • everyone was so FORMAL back then!!!! ugh i would have loved to live then. honorable and coordial...

  • Vivien Leigh looks so beautiful here! I am happy that she won the Oscar because she deserved it!

  • she was so beautiful. one of the most beautiful actresses ever!

  • She deserved this. She was perfect Scarlett O'Hara! Oscar for Vivien!

  • always breathless, always shivers.

  • She is so beautiful and elegant...she speaks with such poise and grace....

    vivien is gorgeous.

  • I can't believe people actually spoke this way at one point in time. She's so beautiful and classic.

  • Delivering an eloquent speech, Vivien Leigh not only exemplified graciousness and poise, but also intelligence in accepting the award; She is my all time favorite actress--Just love her so much. Edward G Robinson asked for a wilderness film in "Soylent Green", I'd probably ask for Vivien Leigh Films, highlighted by Gone With The Wind--If it were I. {: ).

    Thanks for posting.

  • A very intelligent thank you speech from Vivien Leigh herself---my all time favorite actress; she'll always be in my heart forever; EG Robinson requested for the wilderness movie in his end of life in 'soylent green', I'd most likely request for all Vivien Leigh movies, highlighted by Gone With The Wind.

    Thanks for sharing the clip.

    and God Bless Vivien Leigh.

  • She was so lady-like & feminine & graceful & elegant & formal & proper & sweet in her acceptance speech. What happened to make things change so drastically from when women would accept awards like THAT, compared to today? Wow, things have changed. She is so lovely! Amazing actor.

  • Viven Leigh to była piękna, utalentowana, a zarazem wrażliwa aktorka. To gwiazda dużego formatu lat ówczesnego kina. Ona wciąż "żyje", poprostu nie przeminęła...........:)

  • Such a classy woman.

So sad to know that with her she was fighting manic depression.

  • Gone With the Wind has always been one of my favourite movies, Vivian is so charming and eloquent here. It's sad to know she had so much difficulty with mental illness but we can still enjoy her films.

  • She's English isn't she?

  • Es una gran actriz Vivian Leigh...

  • is that spencer tracy hosting the oscars?!

  • it is wonderful. she is so amazing.

  • she is doing nothing more than yet another SCRIPTED PERFORMANCE...it comes across as insincere these days.

  • Because the 3 most important qualities you mention, "elegance, class, and grace," are no longer celebrated - today we celebrate their opposites. An upside down world or a world gone mad!

  • The BEST Scarlett. la MEJOR Scarlett.

    SIN IGUAL!!!

  • I like the way she speaks - not her accent, just the correct way in which she uses the language.

  • I wonder is Vivian and Hattie went partying together after the award show.

  • A real lady.

  • Ela mereceu esse prêmio, pois seu trabalho foi digno de quem tem talento!

  • Ela mereceu esse prêmio, pois seu trabalho foi perfeito.

  • It's difficult to imagine anyone as Scarlet O'Hara, other than Vivian Leigh. It was an arduous production with different directors and the scenes were filmed completely out of sequence. The public expectations for the movie and the unknown Leigh were extraordinary. I don't think Leigh made anymore than about 15 movies. Her and Marlon Brando's performances in "A Streetcar Named Desire" are two of the best on film.

  • i agree totally its shame that her manic depression got so bad she really was a type actress that doesnt come around to often: Talented, she just had everything i suppose her being beautiful just makes her even more lovely to watch.

  • She made 20 movies. But a few of them were small and she had small parts. :)

  • @jkfromcincty She made exactly 20 films :)

  • @jkfromcincty Not to mention the most difficult movie filmd at that time. I mean, what other studio set fire to it's own backlot?! lol

  • @jkfromcincty

She appeared on stage in Great Britain mostly. Of course there are no lasting archives of these.

  • @jkfromcincty I can think of many actresses who could play Scarlett better than her.. The great Bette Davis for example. That annoying, false acting of Leigh just degraded the whole film.

  • For everyone saying it looks like she's 'acting' here--it's because she is (kinda); back then, the Oscars were broadcast "live" on radio only, so there was no need to have multiple cameras and close-ups. The only camera during the live ceremony was the one providing the static shot of the podium. After Leigh won her award, she went backstage and did her speech over again, in closeup, for newsreel footage to be shown in theaters. Notice how the sound quality improves during her closeup shot.

  • That might have been true for other earlier Oscar ceremonies, but for this particular year, this footage is not a newsreel. For this particular awards ceremony, Frank Capra was allowed to direct a short subject film about the Academy Awards, so on that night, not only was he a Best Director nominee for "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," but he was also working as a director for that short subject film; so there were indeed several cameras and lights, etc., to record this particular awards show.

  • I think the two most beautiful women to grace the silver screen were Vivien Leigh and Audrey Hepburn. Both were enchanting actresses.

  • @JackNimble61

Agreed! My two favourite actresses. And they both had such elegance. You don't get that these days :(
