@cherrylove316 It really does make a difference! But then again, things change through times and environment. But she really did look so elegant and full of dignity and pride, I really appreaciate!
Compare this to Natalie Portman's speech at the Golden Globes. I like Natalie, she is such a good actress and maybe she thought a joke was OK. But, again, compare this to it.
gone with the wind has been a favorite since i was five years old. even then i knew i wanted to grow up as beautiful and charming as vivien. Too bad neither of those things are found in very many places.
I first saw Vivien Leigh in Waterloo Bridge when about ten years old.Forty years later I am still mesmerised by those eyes.I know it's superficial but for me she is the most stunning actress ever.
vivien in the role of scarlet is actualy my dream personality... i often thinkof this movie i general and at vivian in paticular in my depressed period./.. it make me fell stronger and show gives me a motivation not to fal down.
She deserved it. No one else could have done a better job in Gone with the wind as her. I must say that it was the absolute best performance I've ever seen by a female. Deserved that Oscar more than anyone else did.
How sad that another of the evening's winners, Hattie McDaniel, was not allowed to sit at the same table with the other "GWTW" nominees because of her race. Also, Hattie was not permitted to enter the ceremonies from the front of the building. Yet, George Clooney applauded Hattie's Oscar win as an example of Hollywood's liberalism?
I read that Olivier was astounded by her performance, despite having acted with her onstage and in their one film together, "That Hamilton Woman" he had no idea what she was trukoy capable of, it really shocked him.
@BahramOfTheOnager Lol that is such an unusual comment, but you made me laugh :) lol You know that apparently when he died, a bunch of her films were found in his bunker....creepy much? And he idolized Clark Gable so much, that he once asked for someone to "safely" kidnap him just so he could meet him. What a creeper...
The British don't age very well but Vivien was always beautiful and was still gorgeous in her last years of living when she had TB which made her age fast before her years to come.
The British don't age very well but Vivien was always beautiful and was still gorgeous in her last years of living when she had TB which made her age fast before her years to come.
Does any1 know here you can get her oscar speech for Streetcar named desire????????? I'm not even sure she turned up or not bt if sum1 can tell me, that will be great, thanks
She stood there and gave that speech as if it were a screen test LOL she had such a talent and class RIP "they just don't make them like Vivien anymore!
@cherrylove316 Why is showing emotion so terrible. Viv is a legend...but she looks like an overly rehearsed robot in this video. There is nothing gracious about apathy. I think Kate Winslet did it best.
What an actress and what a role! The film's length was just short of 4 hours, and she appeared in most of the scenes, which were shot out of sequence. This is arguably the greatest Best Actress Oscar win ever (Meryl Streep in SOPHIE'S CHOICE must come a close second) for a role which is the pinnacle of screen roles, the "ne plus ultra" performance.
I have to say though it almost seemed as if she was playing a character up there... "V. Lee, the Public Persona"? In any case, what a delightful persona. :)
her voice sounds rehearsed in order to emulate a high society woman. Those days, if you can't speak like those british upper class women, your chance as an actress is low. That until katharine hepburn changed everything.
Probably because she had been informed that she was the winner the Oscar, During the 30's he the winners were unveiled two weeks prior to the ceremony, but now the tight secrecy of the ballot made the whole ceremony more interesting imo.
the world was in a sorry state in 1940, surprised vivian travelled across to america from the UK (if she did) given the carnage the German U-Boats were doing to shipping
The speech oration is in itself worthy of another Oscar!!! She so humbly accepted the award--and somehow managed to redirect her claim to fame to DOS. She's a darling--love her so.
Quite different from how awards are accepted in these days celebrations. Good Post!!!
Leigh's ensemble is my favorite Oscar dress, ever. It's so classy, elegant, modern and simplistic--she glows no matter what she wears. Plus, it's really rare to see floral prints at the Oscars today, not to mention a big fur coat.
It might be because the Oscar winners weren't so secretive as they are today--some stars more or less knew who would win, and you always hear stories about anonymous tips telling winners to come to the awards and collect, as was the case with James Stewart and Claudette Colbert. None of the hype or secrecy like today.
Also, I think if every winner was like that we'd probably think they were stuck-up and pompous.
Delivering an eloquent speech, Vivien Leigh not only exemplified graciousness and poise, but also intelligence in accepting the award; She is my all time favorite actress--Just love her so much. Edward G Robinson asked for a wilderness film in "Soylent Green", I'd probably ask for Vivien Leigh Films, highlighted by Gone With The Wind--If it were I. {: ).

@jkfromcincty I can think of many actresses who could play Scarlett better than her.. The great Bette Davis for example. That annoying, false acting of Leigh just degraded the whole film.
For everyone saying it looks like she's 'acting' here--it's because she is (kinda); back then, the Oscars were broadcast "live" on radio only, so there was no need to have multiple cameras and close-ups. The only camera during the live ceremony was the one providing the static shot of the podium. After Leigh won her award, she went backstage and did her speech over again, in closeup, for newsreel footage to be shown in theaters. Notice how the sound quality improves during her closeup shot.
That might have been true for other earlier Oscar ceremonies, but for this particular year, this footage is not a newsreel. For this particular awards ceremony, Frank Capra was allowed to direct a short subject film about the Academy Awards, so on that night, not only was he a Best Director nominee for "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," but he was also working as a director for that short subject film; so there were indeed several cameras and lights, etc., to record this particular awards show.

I think the two most beautiful women to grace the silver screen were Vivien Leigh and Audrey Hepburn. Both were enchanting actresses.

Agreed! My two favourite actresses. And they both had such elegance. You don't get that these days :(
