She's a fundamentalist christian... surprise.
Ironically, when we're kids, we don't naturally care about a person's race or accent or whether they're rich or poor compared to us, we'll make friends easily and just get focused on whatever games we're playing and enjoying each other's company. It's the adults whose judgmental remarks we hear, and the teachers who tell us about "equality" etc. who mess up our pure innocent and natural ability to get along with all other humans. We have instincts to help each other out - what the hell happened?

They had a lawyer from the NAACP on the news talking about how the boss would refer to these employees as "colored people".
