Other than the special battles, can you find any aircraft carriers or battleships in convoy on this game? I played my crew from 1939 to 1944 and have seen tons and tons of aircraft, destroyers, patrol boats, tug boats, etc etc, but not one cruiser or larger. Is that just bad luck or bad patrolling on my part?
Bad luck. I´d convoys with two or more carriers or battleships sometimes. Often you can find a cruiser in a convoy. And with the right Mod you have the chance to take part on big operations like Weserübung, where you can see battlegroups.

Forget backup, radio reports are useless, all their good for is a history lesson. You could be close to base with 5 destroyers bearing down on your ass and you send a status report right before you dive and later on your sitting at 140 m with the brits poppin' fire crackers all over your ass and out of nowhere: beep, "Radio report received: continue as long as fuel and armament hold out". WTF!!! The least they could do is send out a damn shrimp boat with a deck gun or something. FUCK IT!!!

What do you expect them to do ? Writing code to have them run around and abandon ship would be a waste of time. On the view from the sub it looks real enough. We just have the hollywood up close cam that will reveal slight flaws such as this

dude Titanic was HUGE and most of boats in SH3 are not that huge like Titanic, so they will sink faster, if you want they to sink slowly change the time to 1/2x or 1/4x

Very nice game. Once I decided (for the fun of it) to shell a destroyer using my deck gun after finally running away from its depth charge attack. (I had no torpedoes left.) I think I hit its gun or something as it stopped firing back early. But it did charge at me full speed, and essentially I played a game of chicken with this destroyer. Long story short, neither of us flinched and I sank after making a manned torpedo out of my U-boat.
Thats right , your a german U-Boat captain and you have to sink allied ships of all kinds.The Silent Hunter 4 : U-Boat Missions takes place in pacific and you are there with the german u-boat to help japanese in fight against US/British navy.
im not shure whats wrong with mine but when u play the tatorial vids or even the demo at the begining the picture is not the right colors. instead its basic colors like red yellow blue and green istead of making the picture. any help.
I hope SH4 runs on the custom build laptop I am waiting to come. I would be happy if SH3 will play with the graphics and not like this desktop where the water surface isnt generated. But the graphics card is supposed to support Pixel shader 3.0 or something like that and Direct x 10.1

Same as me I am not a expert all I know is that some people on Silent Hunter`s forums from their main site are running SH4 on basically old computers and say long as your drives supports direct X 9.0 or 10.0 what ever SH4 calls for youll be fine. I think I should be I mean its a 512MB graphics card that supports 10.1 DX and 4.1 pixel shaders I think or 3.1 and SHIII calls for 2.0. and I also have 4GB of ram soo it should work but I will wait till I see the game fairly cheap to try.
I thought I would give you an update got the laptop and I tried to get SH3 to work on it but kept saying even running the program as an adminstrator and in XP and windows 98 mode and the game said it didnt detect it. So I got SH4 Gold edition and it runs great even running the game at max graphical settings the pc blows barely warmed air out the exhaust vent.
I've got the very same problem w/ SH2 on my Vista PC ( 2.66 quadcore, 4gigram, etc...) Hardware certainly is not the problem here...
i tried running it in 95/98/xp/2000 mode w/ administrator on / off and SH2 started loading the mission/campaign, but instead of switchung to my boat, all there was is a black screen. What's really strange is that taskmanager tells me that it isn't frozen.
I like the graphics of SH4 but the game play of SH3 is better in my book. I just like the whole Uboat in the atlantic over US subs in the pacific. Not to mention I heard lots of people complaining about how SH4 doesnt have the wreckage in pearl harbor but I dont know if they resolved that with a patch or a mod.
Yep I love having the acoustic torps but its Jan 1943 in my first carreer and I am not getting the acoustics anymore I guess they are on limited supplies now but they were great to keep two tubes loadedwith them in the bow and one in the stern just incase a destoryer starts pinging you.
i know- i would equip with like 3 acoustics before i patrol and often i would get caught up in heat of sinking merchants and accidentaly fire one at a merchant- which is totally useless
I have had three errors with the acoustics before lately. All three of them the gryoscope didnt turn the torpedo and i just ran straight. I have SH3 Commander and got the Malfunction/Sabotage tured on so thats probably where it came in but the only merchant the acoustic I could get to lock onto was like the T2 tanker or the troop transport. Found that out by accident when it lost the destoryer and picked up the T2 and the troop transport

well is you get it on its rear u can destroy them very easly and safe only 1 torpedo needed bad thing is they dont have much tonnage merchants much more

of me and i didnt sink all my men were on the deck gun and then i looked up and saw the propellers and i thought how the hell did i get down here so i ordered crash dive but it was too late there was three men and only one campartment alive and functional so i repaired it and orderd blow balast and with my luck i still had a commander that was qwalified for the helm and two other workers and as i was going up i hit the bottom of a merchant and then i lost the mission and you i had 50,000 t lost!
something simmilar happened to me. Left Brest in U-99 and was halfways to the western coast of Ireland when I encountered a V&W Destoryer. Depth charged me and I took on water in the stern compartments and sunk to the sea floor 134 meters. Didnt know much about the game at the time and didnt know you had to go off silent mode to do repairs and everyone died after the stern two compartments flooded after 3 hours on the ocean floor lol
in single mission "Happy Times" i sunk a total of 50,000 tons of tonnage then i ran out of torps but i was switching from deck gun to torps all the time then i came to the serface and fired a shot at a destroyer it turned and i fired again two armor percings to the front left at the water line folowed up with two star shells and two high explosive shells the it went faster and turned headed stright for me i figured that i could sink it but i was wrong something happend and the ship went over top
i remember one time in Silent hunter II i had a mission to sink some destroyers (polish i think) i confirmed two kills but cant remember if i got the third or not
My brother (the total Silent Hunter freak) told me that in one career mission he bagged 2(!) Nelson-class battleships and a heavy cruiser S/W of the coast of Ireland in mid 1941. Best catch he had so far.

sorry...now I remember. once I hit a destroyer at 100%. it was after an succesfull attack on a convoy. it spotted me and came straight to my poisicion. I fired a torpedo straight into his face and went down. When I was at 100 meters I heard a how the torpedo explodet and the how a ship went down...it must have been the destroyer.
The captain of the U.S.S. Harder used the same tatic too. He'd let destroyers charge him, then fire torpedoes "straight down the throat" before crash diving. He sank about four to five Jap destroyers at Tawi-Tawi using this tatic.
dude, one time i pulled a U-571 and that sucker went under in less than 45 seconds. not to play the "my thing's better than yours" game, i'm just saying you get that sucker, and he's goin down.
in U-571 the submarine survives an attack from a destroyer by firing a torpedo from the stern tube and blowing it to kingdom come. i'll admit i don't play at 100% realism, but you get the idea.
have you ever noticed when in this game a ship is sinking, the guys always remain at their place, but when the navigator says unit destroyed that they abandon posts?

Check out "Fall of the rising sun" or "Trigger Maru" for more realism and better graphics.

acoustic torps work great against escorts- i sometimes will kill the escort of a convoy first- then pick off merchants with no worry

I think that you can do that during single-mission mode, or you can always try and arrive at certain areas where you know ships are going to go.

My brother (the total Silent Hunter freak) told me that in one career mission he bagged 2(!) Nelson-class battleships and a heavy cruiser S/W of the coast of Ireland in mid 1941. Best catch he had so far.

Yah. It's even more amazing than the guys on the stern are staying put, despite the depth charges RIGHT NEXT TO THEM being on fire XD . It is a very realistic game though.

sorry...now I remember. once I hit a destroyer at 100%. it was after an succesfull attack on a convoy. it spotted me and came straight to my poisicion. I fired a torpedo straight into his face and went down. When I was at 100 meters I heard a how the torpedo explodet and the how a ship went down...it must have been the destroyer.

The captain of the U.S.S. Harder used the same tatic too. He'd let destroyers charge him, then fire torpedoes "straight down the throat" before crash diving. He sank about four to five Jap destroyers at Tawi-Tawi using this tatic.

in U-571 the submarine survives an attack from a destroyer by firing a torpedo from the stern tube and blowing it to kingdom come. i'll admit i don't play at 100% realism, but you get the idea.
