I lived near Slidell in an area called Bayou Liberty. I remember being in a shelter, a church hall, next to St. Genevieve Church. I was 4 years old. But I remember being there because i fell and burned my hand on a lantern.
I was 7, living in Chalmette when Betsy came. Dad boarded up the house, and we rode out the storm in a shelter in Arabi. Early in the morning, hearing reports of flooding, he loaded us up and we returned home. Dad had deliberately had the house built on the highest ground he could find, which was Mumphrey Rd. We did not flood, but all around us it did.
The house survived Betsy, but it didn't survive Katrina. We were long gone by then.
Wow, that brings back some memories. I hope you are doing well, Jim. I think about you every time I search for another copy of The Real Police. My son lost my copy in Katrina. :?( Keep the faith brother - Mark Hambrice - Former Chalmation now residing in Arkansas
I Am a Nunez From Down The Road In Reggio I Was 19 Months Old When Betsy Came Through Our House Rode The Tidal Surge And Was Found Several Miles Back In The Marsh
My family lived in Chalmette when this hit ( St. Bernard Parish). I was a year old. They've told me how bad it was. Am glad to find this on here. Thanks for the upload : )
right after the storm passed the government sent several of the amphibious ducks in to go through the ninth ward and rescue people from their rooftops.some places had up to ten feet of water and people were up on their roofs. cars were submerged and after the water went down you could see big v's int the roofs of cars where the ducks had driven over them.
Chlorine barges sank in the Miss. River, so tap water was suspect. I lived in Luling, La., and we didn't use the water for two weeks after. No power either. So it was the camping life for two weeks, cooking everything on a BBQ grill and drinking sodas (bottled water wasn't around then).
After Betsy passed didn't something happen to some ocean barges that had chlorine tanks break loose and sink to the bottom of a river or lake? Authorities were afraid of a poisonous cloud of chlorine bubbling up from the water and drifting into nearby cities and towns? Or, was that some stupid rumor?
I really don't remember anything about that, though it certainly seems plausible. Of course, rumors do tend to run rampant when these situations occur. Good luck with your research!
Cochrane Drive is on the south side of Judge Perez; it runs north-south...at the north end of the Cochrane is what used to be the old Schwegmann's Superstore.
Betsy was a strong cat3.There were rumors about New Orleans government blowing the levee on the east side in order to save the city from flooding.Betsy flooded the Ninth Ward,Arabi, and into Chalmette to Fazzio Dr.During the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927,they blew up the levee at Caernarvon,St.Bernard Parish,14 miles downriver of New Orleans,in order to save the city, resulting in flooding of much of St.Bernard and East Plaqumines, however there were many levee breaks further up near N.O.
I was just a child when Betsy came through. We were living in Jackson,La. My mother had surgery and was released two days before. I can remember standing at the front door and watching the rain fall sideways. The tree pine trees were bending and touching the ground. There were many tornadoes roof damage. My dad and I went out the next day. There was a small creek we swam in there was a good 14 ft from the creek to the bridge. The water as lapping over the bridge.
My family was living near St. Bernard Hwy in Chalmette when Betsy hit and there was no flooding. My parents were building their house on Chalona Dr. in Chalmette near when Betsy hit and it did not flood.
No the video was in Chalmette, I lived in back of Carolyn Park and the water got near the roofs, I was 11. I too feel that the lower 9th nor St. Bernard will ever be protected. In 1927 both were flooded out. to save N.O. the levee at the Violet canal was blown. Wanda
They will never be able to protect St.Bernard and the lower 9th ward from flooding. It's a fact. If i'm not mistaken the mrgo was began building in 64 or 66. People saw what happened so many times there and knew it would always be a risk. Katrina's flooding was the worst in history. Many-many people are smart and not going back there. Murphy Oil should buy more land and expand.
Thanks for posting this. I'd heard Katrina's flooding was worse than Betsy's, so I appreciate being able to see the difference in flooding. Was the MRGO completed in '65?
Cool! I was born right in the middle of it Freeport bahamas Sept 7 '65 while the folks were on a short vacation. Never been there after . But subconsciously questioned Hurricanes in AWE ..or parallels with how my life has been going up till now . Maybe no co-incidence Haha! Anyway, thanks for that.
