I could not imagine doing 18 miles on a treadmil, but I do recommend cycling or doing your favorite activity for 2-3 hours followed by a short run of 3-6 miles and not on a treadmil.
Can I just point out something. Our "expert" here is (and I quote) "teaches cardio fat burning exercises, muscle toning and healthy lifestyle habits" nothing to do with marathons. Again "expert" village giving WRONG advice YET AGAIN about marathon training. Jesus....
And please, do not, I repeat do not, do your long runs indoors. Go outside, have fun! And when you are really having fun on long runs, then start thinking about a marathon. Not the other way around...
oh why thank you for this video. so if I want to run a marathon, a good exercise to do is called running on the treadmill. thank you expert village for another mind blasting video
i like to get all boozed up and run as fast as i fuckin' can while trianing for a marathon. it's a fuckin RUSH when my my tendons snap in my knees and then the cartilage tears. and OMG when the knee ligaments finally tear and the leg muscles are no longer attached to my knees its fuckin NIRVANA BABY !
Best form of training is variety, but for the marathon she's correct Long Slow Distance is key. Most of all enjoy it and go at your pace. I did the Rotterdam Marathon in 2:58 back in 1992 so I know what I'm talking about.
i'm a runner and the only way is to get up early every morning an run 10km. for starters is good to run 2.4km in 10 minutes. the best way is mountain running - running uphill to develop endurance and muscle aerobic/tone.
Variaty is key , i think . I run on all surfaces , hardly ever on a treadmill . I would only run on treadmill if coming back from an injury or there is snow and bad ice on the ground out side .
I would die of boredom on a treadmill! It definitely is NOT the same as cross country. I think variety is key like you said! Unless it is bitter cold outside, nothing compares. I can modify my runs to suit my needs where no run is ever the same! "Obviously!"
The main reason I would use a treadmill would be to reduce the risk of injury. I am assuming that a treadmill reduces to some degree the stresses that can cause injuries to the tendons, knees, etc. So during times when one is more vulnerable--i.e. recovering from an injury, increasing distance/intensity, or beginning a new running program--or just as a general preventive measure re injuries, mixing in some treadmill work could be beneficial. Any input on that anyone?
Yeah i think running on the streets is better as well. Treadmills do a lot of the pushing work for you, you don't get the same workout. I do a lot of cross country running, on gravel, grass, etc,. a lot of up hill and down hill, sunny, shadey, gives much better endurance.
Running on a treadmill is like having sex with a condom. Really it is great for losing weight and providing you a way to not overtrain on the roads. I believe it can set you up for an injury if you do not alternate the treadmill with roadwork. I would also suggest running in the water with a wet vest. But 26 miles on a treadmill seems like a death sentence to me.
agreed as well. the treadmill does mostly all of the pushing work for your legs. to train on a tread mill one should do so at a faster pace to match the work as if one is on the ground.
Of course it is best to alternate your runs on the treadmill and the road. It is better for your body so that it can adjust to long distance and the harshness of running outside. Your knees will thank you. I wouldn't be the runner I am today without treadmills.
This video is definitely basic, but I still think it is helpful for people like me that are just starting!

I run on a treadmill when I'm injured or when I want to analyze my stride and foot plant. Otherwise I do my 2 daily runs both outside.

If you actually ran 18-20miles per day you should be running faster than 2h25min for a half, don't you think?

running on the treadmill helped me a lot to run on the roads. running on the inclined places is the best because it burns a lot of calories

agreed. running on the ground is completely different and even if you adjust the incline its not the same as pushing off the ground.

i think you build more endurance running on the street. if your running treadmill, you have to run the treadmill and not let it run you

I've run countless marathons based almost solely on treadmills. I only did my long runs on the road.

Treadmills are so much more different than running the actual streets.
